The pilot had been aiming for a quiet private airfield in the Cotswolds. He got the United States Air Force instead.

The aircraft was D-CJMK, a Cessna 560XLS+ Citation Excel, inbound from London City. Its destination was Cotswold Airport at Kemble. What it actually found, eleven miles to the east, was RAF Fairford: the USAF’s main bomber base in Europe, currently home to a B-1B Lancer detachment that has been flying against Iran. Fairford’s security forces responded the way you would expect them to respond when an unannounced civilian jet parks itself among the bombers.

Nobody was arrested. Nothing was damaged. But the crew did not get to simply apologise and leave, and the story is a useful reminder that in an age of moving maps, synthetic vision and satellite navigation, the oldest error in aviation is still available to anyone who wants it.

Quick Facts

Date: 12 September 2026

Aircraft: Cessna 560XL Citation XLS+, registration D-CJMK, built 2019

Operator: VistaJet Germany, the former Air Hamburg

Intended destination: Cotswold Airport (Kemble), Gloucestershire

Where it actually landed: RAF Fairford, 11 miles east

Time on the ground: Roughly three hours

Closest precedent: Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche G-ATXD, same mistake, April 2016

Three hours of paperwork

According to The Aviationist, which first reported the incident, the pilot realised the mistake almost immediately and asked to depart straight away for the correct airfield. Base security had other ideas. The jet stayed on the ground at Fairford until interviews and paperwork were finished, and left a little after midday.

Flightradar24’s record of the aircraft shows how short the corrective hop was. The repositioning flight from Fairford to Kemble took six minutes. The aircraft then continued to Gdańsk later that afternoon, its day compressed but intact.

A Cessna 560XL Citation Excel of the Swiss Air Force taxiing at RAF Fairford in 2006. Kemble and Fairford sit close together in a crowded corner of Gloucestershire, at a similar latitude, with similarly aligned runways. Approach from the wrong direction with the wrong expectation and one long grey strip looks a great deal like another.

The most instructive precedent is documented in detail. On 23 April 2016 a Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche, G-ATXD, made exactly the same mistake and landed at Fairford instead of Kemble. The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch published its findings that November, and its analysis is unusually blunt about the mechanism.

“a false hypothesis based on expectation, and he was so sure that the runway was Kemble that he did not check”
UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch — report on Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche G-ATXD, published 10 November 2016

The AAIB called it “a classic case of confirmation bias”. The pilot in that case knew Kemble well. He had simply decided what he was looking at before he looked properly, and every subsequent cue was fitted to the conclusion rather than tested against it. The report also notes he was distracted at the critical moment, explaining pre-landing checks to his passengers.

There is a structural contributor too. Kemble operates a Flight Information Service rather than full air traffic control. An FIS gives advisory information such as weather, surface conditions and reports of known traffic, but it does not control aircraft. Nobody on that frequency is watching an approach develop and telling a pilot he is lining up on the wrong aerodrome. Every approach to Kemble is flown at the pilot’s discretion.

Cotswold Airport, formerly RAF Kemble, from the air. Knight Airport on Davis Islands, Tampa. It had been going to MacDill Air Force Base, a few miles away, where the runway is 11,421 feet long. Peter O. Knight’s runway 4/22 is 3,580 feet. The Air Force attributed the error to a combination of pilot error and fatigue, helped along by the fact that both main runways share the same magnetic heading.

The aeroplane was undamaged, and the C-17 is built to operate from short strips, so it simply flew out again. That departure was filmed from the seawall by half of Tampa.

The clip has been watched well over a million times, which tells you something about the enduring public appetite for large aircraft in small places.

A coincidence worth noting

Cotswold Airport has been privately owned since 2001, when the mothballed RAF station was bought by local businessman Ronan Harvey. It was a support field rather than a frontline one: an Air Transport Auxiliary hub in the Second World War, later a US maintenance facility handling F-15s, A-10s and KC-135s, and home to the Red Arrows and their Folland Gnats from 1966 to 1983.

Its chief executive today is Suzannah Harvey, who in addition to running the airport holds the honorary title of Honorary Commander of the 99th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron. That squadron is based at RAF Fairford. One of the few people in Gloucestershire with a formal foot in both camps runs the airfield the jet was supposed to land at, and holds an honorary post at the one it found instead.

No formal investigation has been announced, and none may follow. Whether the cause was flight planning, navigation, a radio misunderstanding or simply a pilot seeing what he expected to see, the outcome was three hours of lost time and a story the crew will not live down. It could have been considerably worse: at Fairford, an unannounced arrival lands among people whose job is to assume the worst first.

Sources: The Aviationist; UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch report on Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche G-ATXD; Flightradar24; Simple Flying.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
What happened at RAF Fairford on 12 September 2026?

A civilian Cessna 560XLS+ Citation Excel business jet, registration D-CJMK, landed at RAF Fairford by mistake shortly after 09:00.
