The American and Canadian fighters came from Goose Bay in Labrador. Nobody operated from Greenland itself, because Greenland has very few places a fast jet can go.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That is the exercise, really. Holding a multinational package together across the North Atlantic, with a French Air and Space Force A330 Ph\u00e9nix providing the fuel, a NATO E-3 running airspace surveillance and coordination from Iceland, and a Danish CL-604 Challenger orbiting as search and rescue cover in case one of the pilots had a problem.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;We are basically training the ability to synchronize the efforts of many aircraft from different nations and bases, which are spread over large distances. Kangerlussuaq sits at the head of a long fjord in western Greenland, was built by the Americans during the Second World War, and has one runway. Most of the work on a mission like this, the Forsvaret noted, is done before the aircraft take off.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Danish fighters had used Kangerlussuaq once before \u2014 two F-16s, since retired, on a two-hour hop to Pituffik in June 2025. The F-35 arriving is a different statement, because the F-35 is the aircraft Denmark will be defending Greenland with for the next thirty years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">How this became routine<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The groundwork ran all year. In January, Danish F-35s flew directly from Skrydstrup to patrol the east coast near Kulusuk, refuelled by a French Ph\u00e9nix that came up from southern France and went home the same day. In February, Denmark supported NORAD during Operation Noble Defender with F-35s out of Keflavik and a Challenger at Kangerlussuaq covering American and Canadian operations from Pituffik.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Also in February, the Danish-led activity around Greenland \u2014 locally called Arctic Endurance \u2014 was folded into NATO\u2019s Arctic Sentry and expanded to include more nations. That context has not gone away, and it sits oddly alongside a photograph of Danish, American and Canadian fighters sharing a ramp.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The military logic is unaffected either way. Greenland sits across the northern approaches to North America and the North Atlantic, and the ability to put fighters there \u2014 not over it, on it \u2014 is the difference between a patrol and a presence.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Two aircraft is not a presence. It is a proof that the pipes work: the tanker, the AWACS, the SAR cover, the ramp space, the fuel, the weather calls.
