Twenty minutes later German air traffic control closed the airspace. Arrivals were sent to Dresden and Leipzig, departures stopped, and Germany&rsquo;s capital airport sat still for forty-five minutes before the restriction was lifted at 21:05.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>As disruptions go it was mild. Nobody was hurt, no aircraft was damaged, and by Thursday morning BER was running normally with a tail of delays. If this had happened three years ago it would have been a curiosity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>It is not a curiosity now. According to figures reported by dpa, air traffic controllers logged <strong>28 drones<\/strong> at Berlin Brandenburg in the first six months of 2026 alone, and had to stop arrivals and departures on seven separate occasions because of them. An airport spokeswoman said the drone was reported at around 20:00 in the area of the northern runway. Germany&rsquo;s air navigation service provider, DFS, shut the northern runway and then the southern one, and the airspace over the airport was closed at 20:20. It reopened at 21:05.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>A Federal Police spokesperson told Bild that several people had seen the drone. The crew of one aircraft diverted to Leipzig is reported to have mentioned three separate sightings, and a passenger on that flight told the paper the same thing. A single unverified sighting is enough to stop a runway, because the alternative is gambling a full aircraft against a machine that can be bought for a few hundred euros. The asymmetry is total, and it does not require anyone to actually do any harm.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why Germany Stopped Treating This as Nuisance<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The reason a routine forty-five-minute closure in Berlin is worth writing about is what happened at Leipzig\/Halle seven weeks earlier. On 4 August, a drone carrying an explosive device was found near the airport&rsquo;s southern runway, in the vicinity of Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft. A police robot removed the detonator. German media later reported that one of those Antonovs was loaded with military ammunition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Drone sightings, drone threats including in a hybrid context, are something we know from the past. But the pattern runs across the continent. Luxembourg&rsquo;s Findel was shut by drones twice in a matter of days this month. Vilnius has been closed by balloons drifting in from Belarus, and scrambled a NATO Typhoon at what turned out to be a flock of birds. Munich lost a night to drones last autumn; Berlin itself was stopped for nearly two hours in November 2025.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Individually, each is a footnote. Collectively they add up to something a hostile actor would pay a great deal of money to achieve: a continent whose civil aviation system can be paused, repeatedly, at negligible cost and with no attributable act of war. Europe has spent three years worrying about missiles and long-range strike drones. The thing actually stopping its airports costs less than a laptop.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Counter-drone systems exist &mdash; radar, radio-frequency detection, jamming, interceptors. What none of them fix is the decision a controller has to make in the ninety seconds after a pilot says he has seen something.
