Nothing about that is remarkable except what was not happening: no fuel burn, no exhaust, and no engine overhaul clock ticking.

Bye Aerospace has flown the eFlyer 2, its all-electric trainer, with chief test pilot Elliot Seguin at the controls. The company is calling it the first flight, and it opens the aircraft’s formal flight test programme on the road to FAA certification.

One clarification is worth making, because it says something about how long this has taken. An eFlyer 2 prototype first left the ground back in April 2018, and flew in something close to production configuration in February 2019. What flew on Thursday is the aircraft that matters for certification, and the eight-year gap between the two is the real story of electric aviation.

Quick Facts

Aircraft: Bye Aerospace eFlyer 2, an all-electric two-seat training aircraft

Flight: 24 September 2026, from Centennial Airport near Denver, Colorado

Pilot: Elliot Seguin, Bye Aerospace chief test pilot

Motor: A single Safran electric motor, in the ENGINeUS family, rated around 90 kW

Energy: Lithium-ion packs totalling about 92 kWh

Endurance: Approximately 3.5 hours

Maximum speed: Around 135 knots

Company claim: Up to 80 per cent lower operating costs and no in-flight emissions

Certification target: FAR Part 23

The number that sells it

Flight training economics are dominated by two things nobody can control: the price of avgas and the cost of overhauling a piston engine. An electric trainer removes both. There is no fuel bill in the conventional sense, no oil change, no cylinder work, no time-between-overhaul countdown. Bye Aerospace claims up to 80 per cent lower operating costs, and while manufacturer figures deserve scepticism, the direction is not in doubt.

That matters because the global shortage of pilots is at least partly a shortage of affordable hours. A flight school that can cut the cost of a training hour substantially changes who can afford to learn.

“The first flight of eFlyer 2 exceeded all of our expectations in terms of aerodynamics, handling, propulsion and overall performance, and there were no maintenance discrepancies during the flight.”
Rod Zastrow — Chief Executive Officer, Bye Aerospace

Seguin, who flew it, was more measured about what a first flight actually proves. He described it as validating the work the engineering team had put in over several years, and noted that first flights are significant moments any team remembers. Neither man claimed the aircraft is finished. A first flight opens a test programme; it does not close one.

Centennial Airport near Denver, where the eFlyer 2 flew its first test profile. It is one of the busiest general aviation fields in the United States, and a natural home for a trainer programme. Photo: Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 3.0

The problem nobody has solved

Endurance. An eFlyer 2 is quoted at about three and a half hours, which is genuinely useful for circuits and local training sorties, and useless for a cross-country navigation exercise with reserves in a headwind. Batteries store roughly a fiftieth of the energy per kilogram that kerosene does, and no amount of clever engineering closes that gap.

Then there is the charging infrastructure, which barely exists at general aviation fields, and the question of battery life. A training aircraft flies many short cycles a day, and cycling is exactly what wears a lithium-ion pack. The economic case depends heavily on how often those packs need replacing, and that is a number nobody will know properly until a fleet has been in service for years.

Pipistrel has been here first. Its Velis Electro became the world’s first type-certificated electric aircraft in 2020, and it flies today at European flight schools with around an hour of endurance. It proved the concept works and simultaneously demonstrated its limits. The eFlyer 2, if it certifies with the endurance Bye claims, would be a meaningful step beyond that.

If. The aircraft has been in development for more than a decade, has changed motor supplier along the way, and has now flown its conforming prototype. The next few years of flight testing will decide whether electric training aircraft become a category or stay a demonstration.

Bye Aerospace’s own footage of the flight, posted the same day.
