They called it \"Iva\", Russian for willow. The problem, as open-source analysts noticed within hours, is that the launcher looks nothing like the Igla or Verba systems Russia normally fields. A soldier shoulders the launcher while a reporter holds a Russia-1 microphone next to him. The launcher has a large grip stock, a sight on top and a distinctive box-shaped unit near the front. According to Militarnyi, which analysed the report, it carried no visible markings.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"max-width:550px;margin:0 auto 28px\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=2104464667028386244&theme=light\" style=\"width:100%;height:640px;border:none;overflow:hidden\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The account The Dead District was among the first to flag the footage on X on 28 September. It argued the weapon was most likely an Iranian Misagh-2. Other analysts looked at the same pictures and saw something else.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Chinese or Iranian?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The War Zone compared the launcher with Chinese and Iranian designs and concluded that the box-like component at the front looks more like the Chinese QW series, particularly the QW-18\/QW-18A and the QW-19, than like Iran's Misagh-3. Iran's Misagh missiles descend from Chinese QW-series technology. The War Zone lists four possibilities: a Chinese system bought directly, perhaps for evaluation; an Iranian-built derivative; a Russian copy of a foreign design; or, less likely, a North Korean weapon, although no known North Korean launcher matches.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Iranian route has the most circumstantial support. Reuters reported in July 2026 that Iran was expected to receive 300 to 400 Chinese-made MANPADS worth $60 million to $70 million, including QW-12 and FN-16 systems. Iran has already supplied Russia with Shahed drones on a large scale. China, for its part, denies supplying lethal weapons to either side in the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Why would Russia need them at all? Russia builds its own MANPADS, and Rostov Oblast sits directly on the border with Ukraine. It is a region under regular Ukrainian drone attack. Shoulder-fired missiles are one of the simpler ways to bring down a drone, and a front-line region needs a lot of them. The Dead District read the footage as a sign that Russia cannot build enough MANPADS of its own. That is an inference, not a confirmed fact, but it is the obvious question the Iva raises.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>For now, the only certainty is the name the soldiers used.
