Volotea had already started adding fuel surcharges to fares.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The debt was heavy before the fuel shock. aeroTELEGRAPH puts Volotea&rsquo;s financial debt at around &euro;200 million, while Hosteltur reports total debt of about &euro;356 million, with Spain&rsquo;s state holding company SEPI as the main creditor after a &euro;200 million pandemic-era rescue loan. Spanish media report that Volotea&rsquo;s flights are operating normally, that tickets already bought remain valid, and that the filing does not, for the moment, mean cancelled flights or routes. The airline has not said which bases, routes or frequencies will go when the fleet shrinks.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>If flights are cancelled later, the usual EU rules still apply: passengers are entitled to a refund or re-routing, and to compensation if they are told less than 14 days in advance. Airports that depend on Volotea are watching closely. Other regional airports, from Bilbao to Nantes, will be hoping for the same outcome.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why it matters<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Volotea was founded by Carlos Mu&ntilde;oz and L&aacute;zaro Ros, the pair who started Vueling, and it carved out a real niche connecting smaller European cities without routing passengers through a hub. That model looked clever when fuel was cheap. It looks fragile when fuel is not.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Volotea is not the only European carrier under pressure this autumn: airBaltic is already restructuring under Chapter 11 in the United States.
