A MiG-29 had been hit by a Russian missile during a combat mission. The pilot had ejected. He had not survived.

His name was Captain Marat Redvanovych Mambetov, a flight commander in the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade, the unit Ukrainians know as the "Ghost of Kyiv" brigade. According to the Kyiv Independent, he was 25 years old. The Ukrainian Air Force said he was flying missile and bomb strikes against Russian forces on the front line when his jet was struck.

Every pilot lost in this war is a hole that Ukraine cannot easily fill. Every MiG-29 lost is a jet that can no longer be replaced from a Soviet factory that no longer builds them for Kyiv.

Quick Facts

Pilot: Capt. In Ukrainian hands it has become a strike aircraft, flying low and fast to deliver weapons against targets on the front, often in the most heavily defended airspace of the war.

Ukrainian MiG-29s have been adapted to carry Western guided weapons, which lets them strike from further away than with old Soviet bombs. It does not make them safe. Russian air defences and long-range air-to-air missiles cover much of the front, and a low-flying strike jet has seconds to react.

Ukraine has received MiG-29s from partners including Poland and Slovakia to offset its losses, and Poland agreed this summer to hand over more. But the pool of airframes is finite, and pilots like Mambetov, trained and combat-experienced, are even harder to replace.

What it means

Ukraine does not publish its aircraft losses as a running total, and neither side's claims can be independently verified. What can be said is that the MiG-29 remains one of the workhorses of Ukraine's air war, alongside the F-16s and Mirage 2000s supplied by the West, and that it is flying missions with a very thin margin.

Captain Marat Mambetov flew one of them on 1 October. He was 25. He did not come home.

Sources: Ukrainian Air Force statement, Kyiv Independent, Ukrinform, UNN, Hromadske

<use href="#mfsh-i-share"/>Share this story

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
Who was Marat Mambetov?

Captain Marat Redvanovych Mambetov was a Ukrainian Air Force MiG-29 pilot and flight commander in the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade, known as the "Ghost of Kyiv" brigade.
