He said Houthi forces had downed a Saudi Apache with an &ldquo;appropriate weapon&rdquo; while it was carrying out &ldquo;hostile operations&rdquo; against their positions along the border. He gave no details of the weapon, the crew or the exact location.<\/p>\r\n<p>On Sunday, the Houthi-run Saba agency went further. It quoted Saree as saying &ldquo;the Armed Forces succeeded in downing a Saudi enemy helicopter off the Najran,&rdquo; and published footage from the group&rsquo;s military media unit, now describing the target as an AH-6i. Saba said the weapon was a locally made surface-to-air missile. Defence Blog, analysing the same footage, said it appears to show a loitering munition of the Iranian-designed 358 family, which the Houthis call Saqr.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/daTyssVKRHY\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;font-style:italic\">Roya News carries the footage released by Houthi media, which the group says shows the helicopter being hit. The video has not been independently verified.<\/p>\r\n<p>Two things stand out. The Houthi claim came before the coalition&rsquo;s announcement, and the two sides now agree on the helicopter&rsquo;s type, its location near Najran and the fact that it was lost. They disagree on the one thing that matters most: why.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Boeing&rsquo;s Export Little Bird<\/h2>\r\n<p>The AH-6i is the export version of Boeing&rsquo;s armed Little Bird, the tiny, nimble helicopter family best known for flying with US Army special operations aviators. It first flew on 16 September 2009. It is a two-seat machine that can carry machine guns, rockets and laser-guided Hellfire missiles, with a sensor turret under the nose.<\/p>\r\n<p>Saudi Arabia was the first to buy it. In 2010 the kingdom asked the United States for 36 AH-6i helicopters as part of a much larger arms package, and in 2014 Boeing was contracted to build 24 for Saudi Arabia, according to The War Zone and Military Aerospace. AIN reported in July 2016 that deliveries had started. Thailand is the only other export customer, and Boeing has said production will end once current orders are complete.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6x9fI-DjNGE\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;font-style:italic\">StratPost&rsquo;s look at the AH-6i demonstrator, the light armed helicopter that became the Saudi National Guard&rsquo;s scout and attack platform.<\/p>\r\n<p>For the National Guard, the AH-6i is a scout and a light striker, the kind of helicopter that flies low along a hostile border looking for trouble. That is exactly the environment where a mechanical failure, small-arms fire or a cheap loitering munition can each end a flight in seconds, and why the two accounts are so hard to separate from the outside.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A Border Under Fire<\/h2>\r\n<p>The crash comes in the middle of a sharp escalation. On Sunday the coalition also said its air defences destroyed two ballistic missiles aimed at Khamis Mushait, home of <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/air-bases\/king-khalid-air-base\/\">King Khalid Air Base<\/a>, along with drones over the Riyadh region.<\/p>\r\n<p>It is also the latest in a run of Houthi claims against Saudi aircraft. On 15 October the group claimed a missile hit on a <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/air-forces\/royal-saudi-air-force\/\">Royal Saudi Air Force<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/eurofighter-typhoon\/\">Eurofighter Typhoon<\/a> over Saada, and in September it claimed to have downed a Saudi <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/f-15-eagle\/\">F-15<\/a> over Marib. Neither claim has been confirmed.<\/p>\r\n<p>This time there is no doubt about the loss: a wreck and two dead officers. Whether it was a shootdown depends on an investigation Riyadh may never publish.
