Seen from orbit, the shape near Nikumaroro’s Taraia Peninsula looked long, bright and suspiciously metallic. Up close, it turned out to be wood.

The Taraia Object expedition, a joint effort by the Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI), Purdue Research Foundation and Purdue University, announced on Monday, 19 October, Nikumaroro time, that it found no conclusive evidence that wreckage of Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10-E lies in the atoll’s lagoon. The island runs 17 hours ahead of the US East Coast, so in Indiana the news landed late on Sunday evening.

As we reported when the team went ashore on 13 October, the plan was simple: look at the thing in the lagoon up close. The team has now done exactly that. Its verdict is that the anomaly was most likely a collection of large trees washed up on the peninsula’s sandspit. The search for Earhart goes on. This particular lead does not.

Quick Facts

Expedition: Taraia Object expedition (ALI, Purdue Research Foundation, Purdue University)

Result announced: 19 October 2026, Nikumaroro time

Verdict: No conclusive evidence of Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10-E in the lagoon

The object: Most likely a collection of large trees on the Taraia Peninsula sandspit

The shine: A carbonate veneer, not metal

Time on site: Seven days near Nikumaroro, four of them onshore

Notable find: A steel tube about 30 inches long, still being studied

Team: 17 people, including three Kiribati representatives

Driftwood in Disguise

According to Purdue’s release, a good portion of the debris had already fragmented and washed away by the time the 17-strong team reached the site. What remained was a single Y-shaped segment, a fraction of the size of the anomaly seen in the imagery that inspired the Taraia Object hypothesis.

And the gleam that made it look like aluminium? A carbonate veneer. Other items the team found were coated in the same shiny, concretized amalgam of coral sand. On a coral atoll, it seems, even a tree trunk can pass for an airliner from space.

“We accomplished our goal to determine what the Taraia Object was, and we’re deeply grateful to the private donors who shared our vision and made this journey possible. Purdue later said it was also visible in aerial photos of the lagoon taken as far back as 1938. That was the tantalising part: the object seemed to have been sitting there since barely a year after Earhart vanished.

In the end, the explanation was the most ordinary one available. Big trees fall, the sea moves them around, and coral sand gives them a coat of polish.

Purdue University’s video from Nikumaroro on the expedition’s result and why the search for Earhart continues.

Seven Days, Four Ashore

Simply getting there was an expedition in itself. The team left Tarawa in Kiribati on 6 October and spent five days at sea. Once off Nikumaroro, the weather turned against them: Purdue’s updates from the island reported days when conditions prevented shore work, and the trip had to be extended. The crew ended up spending seven days near the atoll, four of them working onshore.

Out in the lagoon, the maritime archaeologists surveyed the area with a magnetometer, which detects ferrous metals such as steel cabling, and with side-scan sonar to look for objects under the sediment. A drone examined the Taraia site from above.

The expedition used a drone to examine the Taraia Object in Nikumaroro’s lagoon. Photo: Purdue University

The fieldwork was not empty-handed. The team found numerous artifacts through maritime and land archaeology, including a steel tube about 30 inches (76 cm) long found in the lagoon near the Taraia Peninsula. Purdue does not link it to the Electra; the finds will be studied further.

They matter because the whole hypothesis rested on a piece of island physics. Objects that enter the lagoon through the Tatiman Passage, the atoll’s natural channel to the Pacific on its western side, can drift across and be deposited on the Taraia Peninsula directly opposite, which works as a catchment area. The new finds may help show whether that premise holds.

“We set out to test a hypothesis, not to guarantee a particular result, and we followed the evidence to the end. While the Taraia Object did not prove to be what we hoped, the journey produced new discoveries, added to the world’s knowledge of Nikumaroro, and wrote another extraordinary chapter in a story of discovery and exploration.”
Steve Schultz — Purdue General Counsel and expedition member, Purdue University release, 18 October 2026

The Castaway Theory Survives

On 2 July 1937, Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan took off from Lae, New Guinea, bound for Howland Island on the third-to-last leg of their round-the-world attempt. They never arrived. The US Coast Guard cutter Itasca, waiting off Howland, received Earhart’s voice transmissions, but she could not hear the ship. The search that followed was the costliest and most intensive in US history up to that time.

Nikumaroro, then called Gardner Island, lies about 400 miles southeast of Howland. Since the 1980s, The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) has argued that the fliers missed Howland, landed on the atoll’s reef flat and were marooned there. The expedition team says it still believes in that broader castaway hypothesis, even with the Taraia lead gone.

Amelia Earhart in 1922, the photo later used on her 1923 pilot’s licence. Purdue funded the Electra she disappeared in. Most historians believe Earhart and Noonan crashed and sank in the Pacific, and despite numerous expeditions, no definitive link between Earhart and Nikumaroro has been found.

Purdue’s Unfinished Business

For Purdue, this is personal. Earhart joined the university in 1935 as a careers counsellor for women and an adviser in its aeronautics department, and the Purdue Research Foundation paid for the Electra she called her “Flying Laboratory”. She intended to return the aircraft to the university after the flight.

The university has pledged to keep searching. “Amelia Earhart never gave up — she kept pushing boundaries and flying into the unknown,” Schultz said in the release. “She kept flying, and we will keep searching.”

Pettigrew, speaking in the expedition’s video, sounded like a man who knows the atoll well: “The island has been holding on to its secrets, and it continues to do so.” Eighty-nine years on, the Electra is still out there somewhere. It just isn’t on the Taraia sandspit.

Sources: Purdue University (releases of 14 and 18 October 2026), WFYI, WLFI, FLYING Magazine, Wikipedia (Amelia Earhart; Nikumaroro)

<use href="#mfsh-i-share"/>Share this story

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
What was the Taraia Object?

The Taraia Object was a visual anomaly near the Taraia Peninsula in the lagoon of Nikumaroro, a remote atoll in Kiribati, first seen in satellite imagery in 2020.
