Residents of Rogéville, north-west of Nancy, heard a detonation that shook their windows and saw a ball of orange fire light up the night.

By Wednesday morning, searchers had found one of the two crew members dead. As of the latest official statements and French media reports, the second airman, the jet’s weapon systems officer, was still being searched for. A safety investigation and a judicial inquiry are under way.

For the Armée de l’Air et de l’Espace, and for the close-knit community at Air Base 133, the loss reopens an old wound: in January 2019, another Nancy-Ochey Mirage 2000D crew was killed on a night training flight.

Quick Facts

Aircraft: Dassault Mirage 2000D, two-seat ground-attack jet

Unit: Escadron de chasse 2/3 “Champagne”, Air Base 133 Nancy-Ochey

When: 20 October 2026, about 22:40 local time (Air and Space Force statement)

Where: Rogéville sector, Meurthe-et-Moselle, north-west of Nancy

Mission: Night training flight, returning to base

Crew: Pilot (27) and weapon systems officer (44)

Status: One crew member found dead; second still being searched for (as of 21 October reports)

Investigations: BEA-É safety investigation; Metz prosecutor’s criminal inquiry

A routine night sortie that never made it home

The jet belonged to Escadron de chasse 2/3 “Champagne”, one of the Mirage 2000D squadrons of the 3rd Fighter Wing at Nancy-Ochey. The crew had flown a night training mission, the kind the base runs every week, and were on the return leg when radio and radar contact was lost, according to the Air and Space Force.

Base commander Colonel Ludovic Humbert told reporters on Wednesday morning that the aircraft was on final approach to Ochey and that weather conditions were “not really optimal”. He added that the jet had been renovated fairly recently and had no reliability problems.

The crew paired youth with experience. The pilot, 27, was a trainee with about 450 flight hours, in the process of qualifying as an operational combat pilot, according to Air and Space Force spokesperson Colonel David Pappalardo. The weapon systems officer in the rear seat, 44, was described as particularly experienced; France Télévisions reported he had more than 2,200 hours.

No names have been released. A command post was set up at the entrance to Rogéville.

Prefect Yves Séguy said night, fog and very poor weather made it impossible to send a helicopter over the area at first, so the initial search was carried out on foot, supported by a drone. He placed the point of impact in the Bois de Grené, in the commune of Domèvre-en-Haye.

One body was found early on Wednesday. Speaking from Doha, President Emmanuel Macron offered the nation’s condolences to the family of the pilot and said the navigator was still being searched for. That is the central question of the Mirage 2000D crash investigation: a two-seat jet with zero-zero ejection seats, and no attempt to use them.

The Metz public prosecutor, who handles military criminal cases in north-eastern France, has opened an inquiry into the destruction of a military aircraft through negligence, a standard step after a military crash. It entered service in 1993 and has flown in most of France’s campaigns since: Kosovo in 1999, Afghanistan, Libya in 2011, Iraq, Syria and the Sahel.

Paris has chosen to keep it flying into the 2030s alongside the Rafale. Fifty jets went through a mid-life renovation, known as the Mirage 2000D RMV, and the last of them was delivered to the Air and Space Force in June 2026. Colonel Humbert said the aircraft lost on Tuesday was one of those modernised jets.

The type has paid a price for its low-level, all-weather mission. On 9 January 2019, a Mirage 2000D of Escadron de chasse 1/3 “Navarre” from the same base crashed in the Jura during a low-altitude night training flight, killing Captain Baptiste Chirié and Lieutenant Audrey Michelon.

Colonel Ludovic Humbert, commander of Air Base 133 Nancy-Ochey, briefs the press on 21 October 2026 (BFMTV, in French).

Lorraine’s skies, again

The sky over Lorraine has been unforgiving lately.
