It is the closest thing the industry has to a measure of how much room you get, and it is also widely misunderstood.

Pitch is not legroom. It is not width. And in the United States, despite an act of Congress, a court case and some 26,000 public comments, there is still no federal minimum for it.

Quick Facts

Seat pitch: Distance from a point on one seat to the same point on the seat in front

Typical economy pitch: About 28-34 in (ultra-low-cost 28 in; many airlines 30-32 in)

Typical economy width: About 17-18 in between the armrests, as low as 16 in

US average pitch: Down from about 35 in to about 31 in

FAA evacuation standard: Full cabin out in 90 seconds (certification test)

FAA evacuation trials: Pitches of 28, 32 and 34 in, widths of 16 and 18 in; no significant effect found

US minimum seat-size rule: None issued, as of the latest published reports

Pitch, legroom and width

Seat pitch is measured from a point on one seat to exactly the same point on the seat in front. Because the measurement includes the seat back itself, the space your knees actually get depends on how thick that seat back is. A thin seat at 29 inches can leave as much knee room as a bulky one at 30 or 31.

Width is a separate number, usually quoted as the distance between the armrests. Economy seats are typically about 17 to 18 inches wide, and CBS News has reported seats as narrow as 16 inches. Typical economy pitch runs from about 28 inches on ultra-low-cost carriers to around 34 inches at the most generous airlines, with many in the 30 to 32 inch range. In the United States, average economy pitch has fallen from about 35 inches to around 31 over recent decades.

An economy cabin fitted with Recaro CL3710 seats. More rows means less pitch. Slimline seats, with thinner backs, less padding and lighter structures, let airlines add rows while keeping, or sometimes even improving, knee room. In 2019 Delta cut economy recline on all 62 of its A320s from four inches to two, without adding seats. The airline insisted it was about protecting personal space, not shrinking it.

“It's really not at all a gateway to reducing your legroom. The FAA's safety standard is about evacuation: aircraft must show in a certification test that a full cabin can be evacuated within 90 seconds. So the agency's Civil Aerospace Medical Institute ran evacuation trials on a cabin mock-up in Oklahoma City, testing pitches of 28, 32 and 34 inches and widths of 16 and 18 inches. It found no statistically significant effect on evacuation time, although people with larger bodies got out more slowly.

Critics pointed out that the volunteers were able-bodied adults under 60, and that the drills had no smoke, darkness or carry-on bags. The FAA asked the public for comments in 2022 and received about 26,000. In 2023 a federal appeals court declined to force the agency to write a rule, and in 2025 a National Academies peer review said the study's main conclusion was not supported by its design and results.

“When you're testing with not-real-world conditions, then that gets me worried.”
Tammy Duckworth — US Senator (D-Illinois), speaking to CBS News, December 2022

Exit rows

The one place where extra space is usually guaranteed is the emergency exit row, and it comes with conditions. Under US rule 14 CFR 121.585, exit-row passengers must be at least 15 and able to open the exit, understand crew commands, read the safety instructions and be willing to help. The airline decides who qualifies, and crew must check before pushback. Seats in the row in front of an exit typically do not recline, so they cannot block the way out.

As of the latest published reports, the FAA has still not issued a minimum seat size. Until it does, the pitch printed on your booking page is set by the airline, and the best tool a passenger has is to read it before buying.

CNBC on why some airline seats are getting bigger and fancier again.

CBS Mornings on the FAA's review of minimum seat sizes.

Sources: FAA (minimum seat dimensions request; CAMI presentation), National Academies TRB Special Report 358, CBS News, Associated Press, AFAR, Recaro Aircraft Seating, Executive Traveller, Wikipedia

<use href="#mfsh-i-share"/>Share this story

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
What is airline seat pitch?

Airline seat pitch is the distance from a point on one seat to the same point on the seat directly in front.
