On 30 October 2026 the Army's Fixed Wing Project Office announced that the first HADES prototype, a heavily modified Bombardier Global 6500 business jet, had made its first flight on 11 September.<\/p>\r\n<p>HADES stands for High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System. It is the jet the Army is betting on to replace a generation of slow, low-flying turboprop surveillance aircraft with something that cruises higher, faster and farther from the threats it is watching. The L3Harris-operated ARES jet deployed to the Pacific in 2022. The Leidos-owned ARTEMIS, a Bombardier Challenger 650, flew in Europe near the Ukrainian border. Two pairs of Global 6500s followed under the ATHENA name: ATHENA-R for radar work, converted by MAG Aerospace and L3Harris, and ATHENA-S for signals intelligence, converted by Sierra Nevada.<\/p>\r\n<p>Those programmes gave the Army operational experience with high-flying business jets and a clear idea of which sensors it wanted. The Army says it will now integrate and test the mission systems on the aircraft, evaluating multi-domain sensing and signals intelligence capabilities before operational demonstrations. A second prototype had been scheduled for mid-2027 under the plan Defense News reported in 2025.<\/p>\r\n<p>Raytheon's ASARS-2B radar, the sensor family flown on the U-2, has been widely reported as central to the HADES fit, though the Army's first-flight release does not list the sensors at all. That is the next thing to watch. A business jet that flies well is the easy part. A business jet that can find targets hundreds of kilometres behind enemy lines and pass them to Army long-range fires is the reason <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/air-forces\/united-states-army-aviation-branch\/\">U.S. Army Aviation<\/a> is spending the money.<\/p>\r\n<p>For now, the headline is simple.
