Between 1 and 14 October, the Type 45 destroyer HMS <em>Dauntless<\/em> and the offshore patrol vessel HMS <em>Tyne<\/em> monitored <em>Neustrashimy<\/em> and the accompanying merchant vessels on their transit.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The MoD did not say how many sorties the drone flew, which sensors it used, or how much of the frigate&rsquo;s passage it covered. Reports also differ on the wider window, with some outlets describing the Protector activity as running from late September to mid-October. She is the lead ship of the Project 11540 class, an anti-submarine frigate commissioned into the Baltic Fleet in 1993, and her voyages between the Baltic and the Atlantic take her through the Channel, where the Royal Navy routinely escorts Russian warships from one end to the other.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><div><em>&ldquo;Our Armed Forces work together every day, around the clock, to keep our country safe and safeguard our national interests. For the first time, Protector has joined Royal Navy warships and helicopters monitoring activity around our shores, demonstrating how we are constantly innovating to monitor and deter threats and irresponsible provocation.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Wes Streeting<\/strong> &mdash; UK Defence Secretary, MoD statement, 31 October 2026<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why this flight matters<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The milestone is less about the frigate than about the airspace. The RAF&rsquo;s previous drone, the <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/mq-9-reaper\/\">MQ-9A Reaper<\/a>, flew for years over Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, but never in British airspace during its RAF career. It was simply not certified to share the sky with airliners over a crowded island.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Protector was designed from the start to fix that. On 29 April 2025 the UK Military Aviation Authority gave it a Military Type Certificate allowing it to fly without geographic restrictions in UK airspace, and the RAF declared it in service that June. The MoD says the Navy&rsquo;s activity monitoring Russian vessels rose by 25 per cent in the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period of 2025. A drone that can stay airborne for more than 30 hours and climb to 40,000 feet changes the arithmetic. The type has had a busy year: Afterburner covered its <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/raf-protector-rg1-outdragon-sigint-akrotiri-2026\/\">mysterious signals-intelligence pod<\/a> in June and its <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/raf-protector-rg1-paveway-brimstone-weapons-qualification-2026\/\">Paveway IV and Brimstone weapons qualification<\/a> in July.
