The Army Air Forces, understandably, saw a priceless publicity asset and kept him stateside as an instructor. Stewart hated it. Stewart insisted the press stay off his base, relenting only when told he was denying his airmen the hometown coverage they had earned. He wanted to be judged as an officer, not a celebrity &mdash; and by all accounts, he was.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The silence afterward<\/h2>\r\n<p>Stewart came home, returned to the movies, and almost never spoke of the war again; his own children knew little of it. He stayed in the Air Force Reserve, eventually pinning on the star of a brigadier general, and in 1966 even flew as a non-duty observer on a B-52 bombing mission over Vietnam.
