It built the fighters that fought the First World War, the racing seaplanes that set world records in the 1920s, and the P-40 Warhawks whose shark-mouthed noses became a symbol of the Second World War. Project after project had failed, and the company, as one historian put it, seemed to have run out of fresh ideas. Both XF-87 prototypes were scrapped. The final irony came soon after: the old Curtiss plant in Columbus, Ohio, reopened under its new owner to build the sleek, successful <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/f-86-sabre\/\">F-86 Sabre<\/a> &mdash; exactly the kind of winner Curtiss itself could no longer produce.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Blackhawk is barely remembered today.
