Canaria, is Spain&rsquo;s air base in the Atlantic and the home of Ala 46, whose 462 Escuadr&#243;n holds a 24\/7 alert over the Canary Islands. Its opening can be dated two ways: the official history records the first landing on 18 January 1924, when three Breguet XIVs arrived, and a royal order of April 1930 declared Gando a national airport. Ram&#243;n Franco&rsquo;s Plus Ultra called here in 1926. The first contingent of military aviation arrived on 3 February 1939 and was constituted as the Fuerzas del Atl&#225;ntico on 1 September 1939; in August 1940 the 29 Grupo Expedicionario de Caza arrived with 24 Fiat CR.32s, and the Air Force took over the Lazareto site in July 1946.<\/p>\n<p>Its fighters were active in the Ifni-Sahara conflicts from 1957 to 1975, and military activity at Gando peaked during the Western Sahara crisis of the mid-1970s. Mirage F1s arrived in 1982 and were replaced by F-18s in 1999. The Hornets flew the alert until June 2026: according to a secondary blog source, 8 Eurofighters arrived on 26 June 2026, older Tranche 3 aircraft from Ala 14 and Ala 11 rather than new Halc&#243;n aircraft, and the last six Hornets left for Zaragoza. 802 Escuadr&#243;n, descended from the 51 Escuadrilla de Salvamento of 1955, flies search and rescue over a vast stretch of ocean and began replacing its CN235s with the C295 in June 2026. Its wing keeps jets ready to scramble at any hour to guard the airspace over the archipelago and the Atlantic around it.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">The official unit history says 462 Escuadr&#243;n keeps fighters on immediate take-off alert 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, from ten hardened aircraft shelters.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">02<\/div>\n<h3>A century of flying at Gando<\/h3>\n<p>Aircraft were landing on the plain of Gando years before Spain had an air force as a separate service. The site later became both an air base and the island&rsquo;s airport.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">The first landing was on 18 January 1924, when three Breguet XIVs named Archipi&#233;lago Canario, Gran Canaria and Tenerife touched down.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">03<\/div>\n<h3>Where Franco flew to war<\/h3>\n<p>The Civil War began with a flight from this airfield. The chartered British biplane that carried General Franco to take command of the army in Morocco took off from Gando.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">The Dragon Rapide left Gando at 2.30 pm on 18 July 1936 and reached Tetu&#225;n at 7.30 am on 19 July, via Agadir and Casablanca.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">04<\/div>\n<h3>Jets over the Sahara<\/h3>\n<p>Gando was the rear base for Spain&rsquo;s last colonial wars in Ifni and the Western Sahara, and its fighters flew real combat missions over the desert.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">CASA-built F-5s rotating through Gando flew more than 500 combat missions between August 1974 and December 1975.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">05<\/div>\n<h3>US Navy Hornets for the Atlantic<\/h3>\n<p>For 27 years Gando&rsquo;s front-line fighter was the Hornet, and the Canary Islands aircraft were second-hand jets bought from the US Navy.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">Spain bought 24 ex-US Navy F\/A-18As in 1995, delivered from December 1995 to December 1998; the last six still flying at Gando left for Zaragoza in June 2026.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">06<\/div>\n<h3>Spain&rsquo;s first satellite went up from here<\/h3>\n<p>Spain&rsquo;s first satellite was not launched from a rocket pad. A converted airliner took off from Gando and fired an air-launched rocket over the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">Minisat 01, a 195 kg satellite, was launched on 21 April 1997 by a Pegasus XL rocket dropped from an L-1011 TriStar flying out of Gando.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<hr class=\"divider\">\n<section id=\"deep\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"kicker\">Go deeper<\/div>\n<h2>The long version<\/h2>\n<div class=\"deep\">\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">01<\/span><span>From a quarantine station to an air base<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Gando Bay, on the east coast of Gran Canaria, mattered to sailors long before aviators. The Air and Space Force&rsquo;s own history of the base notes that Columbus&rsquo;s fleet put in there for repairs in 1492, and that a quarantine station, the Lazareto designed by the engineer Juan de Le&#243;n y Castillo, opened on 21 March 1893. The flat, windy plain behind the bay made a natural landing ground, and on 18 January 1924 three Breguet XIV biplanes named Archipi&#233;lago Canario, Gran Canaria and Tenerife made the first landing there.<\/p>\n<p>Two years later the bay itself became a stop on one of the great flights of the era. On 26 January 1926 the flying boat Plus Ultra, commanded by Ram&#243;n Franco, alighted at Gando to begin the second stage of its flight from Palos de la Frontera to Buenos Aires. The Dornier had left Palos on 22 January with a crew of four, including Julio Ruiz de Alda and the mechanic Pablo Rada, and covered about 10,270 km in all. In April 1930 a royal order declared the land and sea installations at Gando a national airport.<\/p>\n<p>The military took over for good in the 1930s and 1940s. The Lazareto passed to the Ej&#233;rcito del Aire in July 1946.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>The desert wars: Ifni-Sahara 1957&ndash;58 and the Sahara crisis of 1975<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>For half a century Gando faced Africa. Spain&rsquo;s African territories of Ifni and the Spanish Sahara lie little more than 100 km from the Canaries, and the official unit history says the wing took part directly in the Saharan conflicts of 1957 and 1975, flying constant surveillance and patrol missions over the desert in between. The unit&rsquo;s own lineage begins in the desert: its history traces it to the 1&#170; Escuadrilla Militar Espa&#241;ola formed in the Sahara on 9 January 1928.<\/p>\n<p>The Ifni War began with Moroccan attacks on 23 November 1957 and ended with the Treaty of Angra de Cintra in April 1958. From August 1974 to December 1975 F-5s of Ala 21 rotated through Gando, and the encyclopedia entry credits them with more than 500 combat missions, including attacks, combat air patrols and reconnaissance. In the early 1970s its squadrons were 461 with the DC-3, 462 with the Saeta and 463 with armed T-6s.
