Anadolu Agency (April 2024) traces it to 22 July 1942, when the 5th Aircraft Regiment arrived from &#199;orlu; it became a brigade in 1951 and the 9th Main Jet Base in 1953. The same agency&rsquo;s 2013 account gives 1951 as the foundation year: after eight pilots returned from jet training in the United States on 31 August 1951, T-33 trainers were based here, and eight F-84Gs, Turkey&rsquo;s first jet fighters, arrived on 29 March 1952.<\/p>\n<p>Today its F-16s cover the western Black Sea, Thrace, the Marmara and the Aegean. 191 Filo &quot;Kobra&quot;, here since 1967, flew the F-86 and F-104 before the F-16, took part in the 1974 Cyprus operation and the 1999 Kosovo operation, for 302 operational sorties in all, 16 of them over Cyprus (Anadolu Agency, 2013); 193 Filo converts new pilots to the F-16. The first American-trained jet pilots came here with T-33 trainers, and the first jet fighters followed within months.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">Eight F-84G Thunderjets, Turkey&rsquo;s first jet fighters, landed at Bal&#305;kesir on 29 March 1952, seven months after the first eight jet-trained pilots returned from the United States on 31 August 1951 (Anadolu Agency, 2013).<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">02<\/div>\n<h3>The F-16 school<\/h3>\n<p>Every new Turkish F-16 pilot passes through 193 Filo &quot;&#214;ncel&quot;, which takes jet-qualified graduates of &#199;i&#287;li and turns them into combat pilots.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">The conversion course lasts about eight months, according to Anadolu Agency (April 2024); F-16.net records that 193 Filo took over the traditions of 153 Filo in July 2018.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">03<\/div>\n<h3>Round-the-clock alert<\/h3>\n<p>191 Filo &quot;Kobra&quot; keeps F-16s on quick-reaction alert for north-western Turkey, and the base&rsquo;s area of responsibility runs from the western Black Sea across Thrace and the Marmara to the Aegean.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">On 25 February 2026 two F-16s scrambled simultaneously from Bal&#305;kesir after an unidentified radar track was detected on the Bulgarian border; one crashed and its pilot was killed (Ministry of National Defence, via DefenceTurk).<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">04<\/div>\n<h3>Cyprus and the Balkans<\/h3>\n<p>Bal&#305;kesir squadrons have flown in Turkey&rsquo;s 1974 Cyprus operation and in NATO&rsquo;s air campaigns over Bosnia and Kosovo, operating from Ghedi in northern Italy.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">191 Filo sent 18 personnel and 17 aircraft to the 1974 Cyprus operation and 32 personnel with F-16s to the 1999 Kosovo operation; Anadolu Agency credits the squadron with 302 operational sorties, 16 of them over Cyprus.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">05<\/div>\n<h3>The Chios F-16<\/h3>\n<p>Bal&#305;kesir lost a two-seat F-16 over the Aegean in 1996 during an encounter with Greek Mirage 2000s. The pilot&rsquo;s body has never been found, and the case was still in Turkish courts twenty years later.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">The wreck lies at about 400 m depth; in May 2016 Turkish prosecutors sought two aggravated life sentences for the Greek pilot they hold responsible (H&#252;rriyet Daily News).<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">06<\/div>\n<h3>Shared runway<\/h3>\n<p>The military airfield doubles as Bal&#305;kesir Merkez Airport, a small domestic civil airport run by the State Airports Authority (DHM&#304;).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">DHM&#304; lists a single 2,990 m by 45 m asphalt runway, 18L\/36R, at an elevation of 340 ft (103.5 m), and gives 1998 as the year civil service began.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<hr class=\"divider\">\n<section id=\"deep\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"kicker\">Go deeper<\/div>\n<h2>The long version<\/h2>\n<div class=\"deep\">\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">01<\/span><span>From reconnaissance company to first jet base<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Military flying at Bal&#305;kesir began in the Second World War. According to Anadolu Agency (April 2024), the base was founded on 22 July 1942, when the 1st Reconnaissance Company of the 5th Aircraft Regiment moved in from &#199;orlu in Thrace. The agency says the unit was raised to brigade level in 1951 and, after the T-33 trainer entered the inventory, became the first jet base; it received its present name, the 9th Main Jet Base Command (9&rsquo;uncu Ana Jet &#220;s Komutanl&#305;&#287;&#305;), in 1953.<\/p>\n<p>The same agency&rsquo;s 2013 feature tells the story from the jet end and gives 1951 as the founding year. In 1950 the air force decided to acquire jet aircraft, and on 15 October 1950 eight pilots were sent to the United States for jet training. They returned on 31 August 1951, T-33s were based at Bal&#305;kesir, and on 29 March 1952 eight F-84G Thunderjets, Turkey&rsquo;s first jet fighters, arrived. The two dates are not in conflict so much as measuring different things: 1942 for the airfield unit, 1951 for the jet base.<\/p>\n<p>F-16.net adds an earlier layer that the Anadolu accounts do not mention. It records 191 and 192 Filo as activated at Bal&#305;kesir in 1947, the first with V-11 aircraft and the second with Hawker Hurricane Mk IICs, both converting to P-47D Thunderbolts in 1948 and 1949 and taking their three-digit numbers in 1951. These are specialist-site records and have not been confirmed from an official Turkish source.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>191 Filo &quot;Kobra&quot;: two versions of one history<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The senior squadron at Bal&#305;kesir is 191 Filo, call sign Kobra. Its lineage is recorded differently by Anadolu Agency and by F-16.net, and the page publishes both. In the agency&rsquo;s 2013 account the squadron was formed as the 41st Aircraft Company (41. Tayyare B&#246;l&#252;&#287;&#252;) at K&#252;tahya and moved in turn to Merzifon, Eski&#351;ehir and M&#252;rted before arriving at Bal&#305;kesir in 1967. It converted to the F-86 in 1956, taking the call sign Ku&#287;u (Swan), and to the F-104 in 1964, when it became Kobra. It was renamed 191st Squadron Command in 1973 and received F-16C\/Ds in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>F-16.net instead has the squadron activated at Bal&#305;kesir in 1947, flying F-84Gs from 1952, F-84Fs from 1963, F-104G and F-104S Starfighters from 1969 to 1980, and F-16s from 1990. The differences are real: the arrival date at Bal&#305;kesir (1947 or 1967), the Starfighter date (1964 or 1969) and the F-16 conversion (1990 or 1994).
