Sedalia Glider Base, training the CG-4A crews who would go into Normandy and Holland, and was renamed in 1955 for Second Lieutenant George A. Roughly 5,600 military members and 2,000 civilians are split across operations, maintenance, mission support and medical groups, with the 393rd Bomb Squadron flying operationally and the 13th Bomb Squadron training new crews.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">The wing moved to Whiteman on 30 September 1990 and took its first B-2, the Spirit of Missouri, on 17 December 1993.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">03<\/div>\n<h3>A lineage that runs back to Tinian<\/h3>\n<p>The 509th carries the numerals of the 509th Composite Group, the unit activated at Wendover, Utah, in December 1944 to deliver the first atomic weapons. It flew the Hiroshima and Nagasaki missions from Tinian in August 1945. On 15 April 2024, closing out the Spirit Vigilance readiness exercise, twelve B-2s taxied nose to tail and launched in sequence &mdash; most of the operational fleet moving in a single morning, on a single strip of Missouri concrete.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>Low-observable maintenance: what it actually takes to keep a Spirit stealthy<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>A B-2 is not stealthy the way a rifle is accurate. It is stealthy the way a racing yacht is fast &mdash; continuously, conditionally, and only as long as people keep working on it. The aircraft&rsquo;s signature depends on coatings, seals, gap fillers and tapes applied over a composite airframe, and on every panel line and fastener sitting where the design intends. Fly the aircraft and some of that degrades. Airmen of the 509th Maintenance Group and the Missouri Air National Guard&rsquo;s 131st Maintenance Squadron strip, re-apply and cure those materials after flights, a job that can take from half an hour to most of a working day on a single defect.<\/p>\n<p>The materials are fussy about weather, which is the real reason the jets live indoors. Adhesives and cure schedules are sensitive to temperature and humidity, so the aircraft are worked and stored in environmentally controlled shelters rather than parked on an open ramp. A separate signature-diagnostics team then inspects the finished work with lights and specialised equipment, confirming the repair has genuinely restored the radar signature rather than merely looking tidy.<\/p>\n<p>The flying side is demanding in a different way. The B-2 carries a crew of two &mdash; a pilot in the left seat and a mission commander in the right &mdash; and puts up to 40,000 pounds of ordnance into two internal bays whose doors open and shut in seconds to minimise the moment the aircraft is visible. Depot work is handled through contractor support at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. Unit cost was put at roughly 1.157 billion dollars in fiscal 1998 terms, which is much of why a single landing accident becomes national news.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">03<\/span><span>Combat from Missouri: Kosovo, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen and Iran<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Because the fleet does not routinely forward-deploy, Whiteman crews have made the round trip itself the signature of the aircraft. The B-2&rsquo;s combat debut came in Operation Allied Force, which opened on 24 March 1999. Crews flew roughly 30-hour non-stop missions from Missouri to Yugoslavia and back, refuelling twice outbound over the Atlantic and twice on the return. The B-2 flew under one per cent of NATO sorties yet delivered about eleven per cent of the bomb tonnage, releasing more than 650 Joint Direct Attack Munitions.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2001, over Afghanistan, the type set the endurance record that still defines it. Maj. Melvin G. Deaile and Capt. Brian Neal flew Spirit of America from Whiteman, struck their targets and recovered at Diego Garcia after 44 hours and 20 minutes airborne. The engines kept running while the aircraft was refuelled, re-oiled, restocked and handed to a fresh crew, which took off again about 45 minutes later; the airframe logged over 70 hours without an engine shutdown. In flight, the off-duty pilot slept on a folding lounge chair behind the seats, next to the jet&rsquo;s toilet.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern repeated. Three B-2s opened Operation Odyssey Dawn over Libya in March 2011, each carrying sixteen 2,000-pound weapons and striking 45 targets on the first night. On 16 October 2024, B-2s hit five hardened underground weapons storage sites in Houthi-controlled Yemen. In June 2025, seven B-2s flew a 36-hour mission from Whiteman against Iranian nuclear facilities, dropping twelve GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators on Fordow and two more at Natanz, with 14 airmen from the active wing and the Missouri Air National Guard in the cockpits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">04<\/span><span>From Wendover and Tinian to Missouri: the 509th&rsquo;s lineage, handled carefully<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The 509th Composite Group was activated on 17 December 1944 at Wendover, Utah, under Lt Col Paul W. Tibbets, built specifically to deliver atomic weapons. It comprised 225 officers and 1,542 enlisted men, including the 393rd Bombardment Squadron, and trained with modified B-29s and inert shapes matching the weapons in size and weight. The group moved to Tinian in the Marianas in late May 1945 and began conventional combat operations on 30 June.<\/p>\n<p>On 6 August 1945 the B-29 Enola Gay, flown by Tibbets with Capt. William Parsons as weaponeer, released the Little Boy weapon over Hiroshima at about 08:15 local time, accompanied by two observation aircraft. On 9 August, Bockscar dropped the Fat Man weapon on Nagasaki by radar after cloud cover forced a change of method. These were the only combat uses of nuclear weapons in history, and the devastation they caused is not something an aircraft page should flatten into trivia. The group left Tinian on 17 October 1945 and moved to Roswell, New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The distinction matters. The wartime group and the 509th Bomb Wing that flies the B-2 today are not the same organisation. The 509th Bombardment Wing was activated on 17 November 1947, served at Roswell and then at Pease AFB, New Hampshire, from 1958 to 1990, and transferred to Whiteman on 30 September 1990. What it inherits is heritage and numerals &mdash; and, in the 393rd Bomb Squadron, a designation that genuinely traces back to Tinian.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">05<\/span><span>Total force at Whiteman: the 131st Bomb Wing and the 442nd Fighter Wing<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The 131st Bomb Wing is one of the more unusual arrangements in the US Air Force. Its roots run to the 110th Observation Squadron, established in St Louis on 23 June 1923; it flew F-15 Eagles from Lambert Field until the 2005 base-closure round took that mission away. In February 2006 the Air Force approved a classic association with the 509th, and on 1 October 2008 the unit was redesignated the 131st Bomb Wing. It owns no separate aircraft: Guard pilots and maintainers work the same jets, shelters and alert commitments as their active-duty counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>The first all-Air National Guard B-2 sortie flew on 18 June 2008, with Col. Gregory Champagne and Maj. David Thompson aboard Spirit of Arizona. Today the wing counts around 1,200 military members and is the only nuclear-certified bomb wing in the Air National Guard. Missouri Guard airmen were among the crews on the October 2024 Yemen strikes and the June 2025 mission against Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Sharing the flight line is the Air Force Reserve&rsquo;s 442nd Fighter Wing, which brought its A-10 Thunderbolt IIs to Whiteman on 12 June 1994 &mdash; a neat historical loop, since the 442nd Troop Carrier Group had been activated at the same airfield on 1 September 1943, when it was Sedalia Army Air Field. The A-10 is a deliberate contrast to its neighbours: slow, heavily armoured, built to loiter over troops and absorb hits. Its time is nearly up. On 29 July 2026 the Air Force Reserve named Whiteman the sole candidate for 24 F-15E Strike Eagles, with the A-10s due to retire by the end of 2028.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">06<\/span><span>Sedalia to Minuteman to Raider: a base that keeps changing its mission<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Whiteman has been reinvented roughly every twenty years. Activated on 6 August 1942 as Sedalia Glider Base, it became Sedalia Army Air Field that November, training glider pilots and paratroopers on Waco CG-4A gliders towed by C-46s and C-47s. It closed after the war, reopened in August 1951 under Strategic Air Command, and took B-47 Stratojets from March 1954. On 3 December 1955 it was renamed for 2nd Lt George A. Whiteman, a local airman killed at Bellows Field during the attack on Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>The missile era began with the activation of the 351st Strategic Missile Wing on 1 February 1963; the wing went to full operational alert on 29 June 1964. Its 150 launch facilities and 15 launch control facilities were spread across roughly 16,000 square miles of 14 west-central Missouri counties, so that for three decades a farmer&rsquo;s field might contain a fenced acre of concrete holding a Minuteman. President George H. W. Bush ordered the missiles off alert on 28 September 1991 under START; the last Minuteman was pulled from its silo on 18 May 1995, the 351st inactivated that July, and the final silo was imploded in December 1997. One launch control facility survives: Oscar-01, on base, which commanded ten ICBMs from 1964 to 1993 and is now open for small guided tours.<\/p>\n<p>The next change is already under way. On 13 September 2024 the Air Force named Whiteman the second operational base for the B-21 Raider, after Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota, and ahead of Dyess AFB, Texas. The B-2 is not going quietly: the service has slowed bomber retirements and programmed roughly 1.35 billion dollars of B-2 upgrades across fiscal years 2027 to 2031. For a base that has hosted gliders, Stratojets, buried missiles and stealth bombers, absorbing a fourth generation of strategic aircraft is less a rupture than a habit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<hr class=\"divider\">\n<section id=\"timeline\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"kicker\">Timeline<\/div>\n<h2>Whiteman Air Force Base, year by year<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tl\">\n<div class=\"tl-item\">\n<div class=\"yr\">1942<\/div>\n<p>The installation is activated on 6 August as Sedalia Glider Base, becoming Sedalia Army Air Field that November.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tl-item\">\n<div class=\"yr\">1943<\/div>\n<p>The 442nd Troop Carrier Group is activated at Sedalia Army Air Field on 1 September, departing in December.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tl-item\">\n<div class=\"yr\">1944<\/div>\n<p>The 509th Composite Group is activated at Wendover, Utah, on 17 December under Lt Col Paul W. Brian Neal took Spirit of America off from Whiteman, refuelled repeatedly along a route that ran past California, Hawaii, Guam and the Strait of Malacca, struck targets in Afghanistan and landed at Diego Garcia after 44 hours and 20 minutes in the air. The engines were never shut down. The aircraft was refuelled, re-oiled, its toilet emptied and fresh food loaded, a new two-man crew climbed in, and about 45 minutes later it was airborne again for the flight back to Missouri &mdash; more than 70 hours of running engines in total. On the outbound leg the off-duty pilot slept on a folding lounge chair wedged behind the seats.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"incs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airandspaceforces.com\/article\/44-hours\/\">Air &amp; Space Forces Magazine<\/a><\/article>\n<article>\n<div class=\"incd\">23 February 2008<\/div>\n<h3>Spirit of Kansas is lost on take-off at Andersen AFB, Guam<\/h3>\n<p>A B-2 named Spirit of Kansas crashed seconds after take-off from Andersen AFB on Guam, the first and so far only complete operational loss of the type. The accident investigation, led by Maj. Gen. Floyd Carpenter, found that moisture inside the aircraft&rsquo;s port transducer units had corrupted the air data used during calibration. The flight control computers acted on the distorted information and commanded an uncommanded nose-high pitch-up of about 30 degrees, from which the aircraft stalled. Both pilots ejected. The airframe had accumulated around 5,200 flying hours and had been among the most reliable in a fleet of 20. Given a unit cost the Air Force puts at roughly 1.157 billion dollars in fiscal 1998 terms, the loss is routinely described as the costliest aircraft accident to that point.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"incs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airandspaceforces.com\/moreontheb-2crash\/\">Air &amp; Space Forces Magazine<\/a><\/article>\n<article>\n<div class=\"incd\">14 September 2021<\/div>\n<h3>Spirit of Georgia skids off the runway at Whiteman<\/h3>\n<p>B-2 serial 89-0129, Spirit of Georgia, suffered a left main landing gear collapse while landing at Whiteman and slid off the runway, coming to rest roughly a mile beyond the touchdown point. Investigators found that the lock link springs had not held the gear links in the locked position, with a hydraulic CryoFit coupling failure contributing by isolating the lock link actuator. Damage was assessed at about 10.1 million dollars and the pilots were cleared of fault. Unlike the aircraft damaged the following year, this one was worth saving: Northrop Grumman&rsquo;s depot programme replaced the left wingtip, an outboard wing mate skin panel and the left main gear door hinges, and repaired disbonded composite skin using a donor part from a test article. Structural work finished on 12 May 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"incs\" href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/12\/03\/b-2-spirit-of-georgia-returns-to-operational-service\/\">The Aviationist<\/a><\/article>\n<article>\n<div class=\"incd\">10 December 2022<\/div>\n<h3>A gear collapse, a wing fire, and a six-month grounding of the whole fleet<\/h3>\n<p>A B-2 returning to Whiteman from a training flight suffered a hydraulic failure traced to the CryoFit coupling on a truck position sequence valve in the left main landing gear. The emergency extension procedure could not save it; the gear collapsed on landing and the left wing dragged for several thousand feet, rupturing the left fuel surge tank and starting a fire that spread to the outboard tank. Neither pilot was hurt. Firefighters initially used water while authority to apply foam on stealth materials was confirmed, and the fire burned for about an hour. Damage exceeded 300 million dollars and the aircraft was judged too expensive to repair. Air Force Global Strike Command stood the entire fleet down on 16 December 2022; flying resumed on 22 May 2023.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"incs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airandspaceforces.com\/hydraulic-failure-led-to-fire-that-destroyed-b-2-bomber-in-2022-air-force-says\/\">Air &amp; Space Forces Magazine<\/a><\/article>\n<article>\n<div class=\"incd\">16 October 2024<\/div>\n<h3>B-2s strike hardened underground targets in Yemen<\/h3>\n<p>B-2s from Whiteman struck five hardened underground weapons storage sites in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, the first use of the type against that adversary. The mission drew on the whole of what the base calls Team Whiteman: the active-duty 509th Bomb Wing, the Missouri Air National Guard&rsquo;s 131st Bomb Wing and the Joint-Global Strike Operations Center, with planning support from Missouri Guard units at Jefferson Barracks in St Louis. Col. Keith J. Butler, commanding the 509th, said the mission was the result of hard work, long hours and dedication by many across the installation. Maj. Gen. Jason R. Armagost of Eighth Air Force framed it as the warfighting component of US Strategic Command demonstrating readiness to respond anytime, anywhere.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"incs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteman.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/3974134\/stealth-bombers-land-precision-strike-against-houthi-militia\/\">Whiteman Air Force Base<\/a><\/article>\n<article>\n<div class=\"incd\">21&ndash;22 June 2025<\/div>\n<h3>Operation Midnight Hammer: seven B-2s, 36 hours, and the deepest targets on the list<\/h3>\n<p>Seven B-2s launched from Whiteman just after midnight local time on 21 June 2025 for what became the largest operational B-2 strike in the aircraft&rsquo;s history. Fourteen airmen, active-duty and Missouri Air National Guard, ranging in rank from captain to colonel, flew a mission of about 36 hours. Twelve GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators were put into two ventilation shafts at Fordow and two more struck Natanz. The strike package involved around 125 aircraft in total, including tankers and fighter escort. Gen.
