The wing came south to north: as the H&#228;me Air Wing (H&#228;meen Lennosto) it had flown from Luonetj&#228;rvi at Tikkakoski since just before the Winter War, and it moved to Rovaniemi in 1973, having just re-equipped with the Saab 35 Draken; it was renamed the Lapland Air Wing in 1974. The move gave Finland a permanent fighter wing in the far north.<\/p>\n<p>The Draken era at Rovaniemi ended in 2000, after Fighter Squadron 11 had begun converting to the F\/A-18 Hornet in 1999. Today the wing employs about 430 to 450 people (its English page gives about 430, its Finnish page about 450), flies most of its training over Lapland, Kainuu and Northern Ostrobothnia, trains with the Swedish and Norwegian air forces almost every week under the cross-border training scheme, and runs the 5th Control and Reporting Centre and its radar stations.<\/p>\n<p>On 18 September 2026 at 17.45 the first two Finnish F-35As, JF-510 and JF-512, landed at Rovaniemi. Deliveries from the production line run to the end of 2030; the Lapland Air Wing is to fly only the F-35 from the beginning of 2028, with initial operational capability in 2028 and full capability at the end of 2030. Command of the wing passes from Colonel Saku Joukas to Colonel Tuukka Elonheimo on 1 October 2026. When German forces arrived in northern Finland in 1941 for the attack on the Soviet Union, the Luftwaffe took the field over and enlarged it. Henry deZeng&rsquo;s wartime survey describes a landing ground of roughly 1,510 by 1,000 metres, with a 1,280-metre north-south strip, partly concreted at its southern end, a 1,000-metre east-west strip, five hangars and night-landing equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Rovaniemi was never a front-line fighter base. It sat in the rear, and the German air command in Finland, the Kommandierender General der deutschen Luftwaffe in Finnland, was among the headquarters stationed there. Its flying units show the pattern: the dive bombers of IV.(Stuka)\/LG 1 in June and July 1941, a reconnaissance flight for Lapland from 1941 to 1942, twin-engined fighters of I.(Z)\/JG 77 in the winter of 1941&ndash;42, and I.\/St.G. 5 from January to March 1942.<\/p>\n<p>From 1942 the traffic was mostly transport and liaison: the transport squadron of Fliegerf&#252;hrer Nord (Ost), the courier flights of the German air commands in Finland, a target-towing squadron in the summer of 1944, and Stuka training and replacement squadrons in 1942&ndash;43. The last listed unit, a tactical reconnaissance squadron, came in October 1944, weeks before the end. For Finland the airfield was, in effect, a German base on Finnish soil for more than three years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>The Lapland War and the burning of Rovaniemi<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Finland&rsquo;s armistice with the Soviet Union of 19 September 1944 required it to expel the German troops in the north, and the Lapland War followed. The Finnish Air Force&rsquo;s own history describes it as the conflict in which Finnish forces drove the German troops out of Finnish territory by military action. For the airmen it was the last campaign of the Second World War; the service flew its final wartime sortie in April 1945.<\/p>\n<p>Rovaniemi was a German stronghold in the retreat. The Germans set out to destroy government buildings; the fire spread, and on 14 October 1944 an ammunition train caught fire at the railway station and exploded, carrying the flames through the largely wooden town. Figures in general references put the destruction at about 90 per cent of the town&rsquo;s buildings. Finnish troops reached the town on 14&ndash;15 October, and the last Germans left on 16 October after holding the final bridge over the Kemi river.<\/p>\n<p>According to deZeng, the Germans had already evacuated the airfield a few days before the Finns arrived. The town was rebuilt after the war to a plan by Alvar Aalto that, seen from above, traces a reindeer&rsquo;s head and antlers. This page could not locate an official Finnish source describing the specific damage done to the airfield itself, so none is given here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">03<\/span><span>The wing comes north, 1973<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Post-war Finland kept its fighter wings in the south and centre of the country. The H&#228;me Air Wing (H&#228;meen lennosto) had flown from Luonetj&#228;rvi at Tikkakoski, latterly with the small Folland Gnat. In the early 1970s it was re-equipped with the Saab 35 Draken, and, in the Air Force&rsquo;s own words, &ldquo;the wing was relocated to its new main operating base at Rovaniemi. It was later renamed Lapland Air Wing.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Secondary references date the move to 1973 and the new name to 1974. The day-level dates used elsewhere could not be confirmed on an official page reached for this article. The effect was clear: for the first time Finland had a permanent fighter wing in the far north, a sparsely populated region bordering Sweden, Norway and the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n<p>The Draken made the move worthwhile. The Air Force describes its arrival in 1972 as the moment it gained an all-weather capability. The first 12 were ordered in April 1970 and assembled by Valmet in Finland, and in all 48 served, according to the Finnish Air Force Museum; other references count about 49 including second-hand Swedish aircraft. The official accident register records only one Draken loss, DK-231, which crashed at Uurainen in central Finland in November 1995.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">04<\/span><span>From Draken to Hornet<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The Hornet decision of 1992 set the course for Rovaniemi&rsquo;s next three decades. The first six two-seat F-18Ds were flown from the United States to Pirkkala in November 1995, and the single-seat C models followed from Patria&rsquo;s assembly line. The Lapland Air Wing began its conversion in January 1999, according to secondary references, and the last Draken flight in Finnish service took place in August 2000, the museum records.<\/p>\n<p>The Draken&rsquo;s last day in Finnish service is commonly given as 16 August 2000, although the museum names only the month; the summary figure of 48 aircraft is the museum&rsquo;s. Since then Fighter Squadron 11 (H&#228;vitt&#228;j&#228;lentolaivue 11) has flown the F\/A-18C\/D. The Defence Forces reform that began in 2012 concentrated all Hornet flying at two wings, Lapland and Karelia, leaving Rovaniemi as the northern of Finland&rsquo;s two fighter bases.<\/p>\n<p>The wing today numbers about 430 people according to its English page (about 450 on its Finnish page), with roughly 350 in uniform. Besides the squadron it runs a maintenance squadron, a communications unit and the 5th Control and Reporting Centre with radar stations spread from northern Lapland to Kainuu. Under the Cross Border Training scheme, Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian fighters fly joint sorties in each other&rsquo;s airspace or along the borders; the wing says it does so nearly every week. The same three countries created the Arctic Challenge Exercise, first held in 2013 and run every second year. Finland led the 2017 edition, which drew more than 100 aircraft from 11 countries.<\/p>\n<p>ACE 23, held from 29 May to 9 June 2023 immediately after Finland joined NATO, was flown from four bases: Rovaniemi and Pirkkala in Finland, Lule&#229; in Sweden and &#216;rland in Norway. About 150 aircraft and 3,000 personnel from 14 nations took part. Five years earlier, during NATO&rsquo;s Trident Juncture 18 in 2018, Rovaniemi hosted US Air Force F-15Cs and KC-135 tankers and Belgian F-16s alongside four Finnish Hornets and about 100 Finnish personnel.<\/p>\n<p>The routine has a lighter side. On 11 December 2024 Hornets of Fighter Squadron 11 joined the Swedish Air Force&rsquo;s traditional Christmas tree flight for the first time, flying with Gripens from Rovaniemi over Pello, Haparanda, Kalix, Boden and Lule&#229; and back via Oulu. In early 2025 the squadron flew Finland&rsquo;s first NATO air-policing rotation in Iceland, with four F\/A-18s and about 50 personnel at Keflav&#237;k.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">06<\/span><span>The F-35 arrives<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>On 10 December 2021 the government chose the F-35A in the HX competition: 64 aircraft, with a total package of about 8.4 billion euros including 777 million euros for infrastructure. Rovaniemi was picked to receive them first. Construction began there in September 2023, including underground excavation, and the airfield became a building site beside the Hornet lines, a fact that mattered when HN-409 crashed there in May 2025.<\/p>\n<p>At 17.45 on 18 September 2026 the first two Finnish F-35As, JF-510 and JF-512, landed at Rovaniemi escorted by Hornets. Maintenance training begins at Rovaniemi in late 2026 and pilot training in Finland in January 2027, while Finnish pilots continue to train at Eglin and Ebbing in the United States until early 2028.
