built for and what flies there now<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cols\">\n<div>\n<p>The airfield at Sedlec and V&#237;cenice, west of Brno near the town of N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; nad Oslavou, was approved by the Czechoslovak government on 20 June 1956 and built for a jet regiment. The 20th Fighter Regiment, formed at &#268;&#225;slav on 1 October 1956, moved in on 14 January 1960 with MiG-15s. Over the following decades the base flew the Su-7, the Su-22 and the Su-25 in the ground-attack role, and later L-39ZA and L-159 jets; the regiment was given the honorific &ldquo;Biskajsk&#253;&rdquo; by the president in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013 N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; changed character. Jet flying ended, and on 24 September 2013 nine Mi-171&#352; transport helicopters flew in from P&#345;erov, where military flying was being shut down; on 1 December 2013 the two bases were merged as the 22nd Helicopter Air Force Base &ldquo;Biskajsk&#225;&rdquo;, which by its own count now has more than 1,000 people. Since then N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; has been the home of the army&rsquo;s attack helicopters and its Mi-171&#352; transports; the W-3A Sokols and Mi-17s fly from Prague-Kbely. Its Mi-24 and Mi-35 attack helicopters flew their last live-fire sorties in June 2023 after 45 years in service, and were replaced by US-built H-1s: the first two AH-1Z Vipers arrived in a C-17 on 26 July 2023, and the last of the twelve bought (eight UH-1Y Venoms and four AH-1Z Vipers) on 13 June 2024. The United States is adding eight more, six AH-1Zs and two UH-1Ys, as a gift in recognition of Czech aid to Ukraine, for a final fleet of ten of each.<\/p>\n<p>The 221st Squadron, which flies the H-1s, has belonged to the NATO Tiger Association since 2001. From April 2026 the base is also carrying the L-159s of &#268;&#225;slav while that runway is rebuilt, bringing jets back to N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; for the first time since 2013. About 20,000 people came to the base&rsquo;s 60th anniversary open day in October 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Since September 2025, after Russian drones entered Polish airspace, the base has kept a helicopter task group in eastern Poland; two UH-1Y Venoms arrived there on 18 March 2026 for the H-1&rsquo;s first foreign deployment. On 23 July 2026 a UH-1Y returning from a training flight fell from about 50 m on the airfield and caught fire: Senior Sergeant Kate&#345;ina Steinocherov&#225;, 21, was killed and the four others on board were injured. The H-1 fleet was grounded and returned to flight on 26 August 2026. On 20 June 1956 the government of Czechoslovakia approved its construction. It was built for the jet age: according to a 2023 account of the Ministry of Defence&rsquo;s modernisation study, it was the only base in former Czechoslovakia built to a new concept in which the barracks are completely separate from the airfield itself.<\/p>\n<p>The unit it was built for already existed. The 20th Fighter Regiment was formed on 1 October 1956 at &#268;&#225;slav, under the 6th Fighter Air Division in Brno, and waited there for the concrete to set. On 14 January 1960 it moved to N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357;. The army counts 1 October 1956 as the birthday of the N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; garrison, and marked its 60th anniversary in 2016 with an open day that drew nearly 20,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>The first equipment was the MiG-15 in its Czechoslovak licence-built forms, the S-102 and S-103, plus two-seat trainers. The base&rsquo;s own history says the MiG-15s were the first jets on the new field in 1960 and were replaced after five years by the Soviet Su-7 fighter-bomber, which then stayed for a long time. The base also lists older piston types such as the C-11 (Yak-11) and C-105 among the aircraft it once flew.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>Sukhois and the ground-attack role<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>With the Su-7 the regiment&rsquo;s job moved from air defence to striking ground targets. The base&rsquo;s own aircraft pages list the Su-7BM, Su-7BKL and the two-seat Su-7U as types flown at N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357;, and state plainly that the Su-7BM was equipped for tactical nuclear weapons in Czechoslovak service. The page does not say whether any such weapons were ever held in the country, and no source read for this page does.<\/p>\n<p>The swing-wing Su-22 followed. N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; flew the Su-22M-4 and the two-seat Su-22UM-3K; in 1998 the Czech Republic still had 28 and five of them. The base history also lists the Su-25 attack aircraft, which entered Czechoslovak service in 1985; in 1998 the country flew 24 Su-25Ks and one Su-25UBK. The Su-25s were withdrawn at the end of 2000 and the last Su-22 in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>The unit changed names as the army shrank. The base&rsquo;s list of commanders shows the sequence: the 20th Fighter Regiment, the 20th Fighter-Bomber Regiment and 20th Air Base, the 32nd Tactical Air Base and the 22nd Air Base. The dates of each change are not given in the sources read. In 1990 the regiment received the honorific &ldquo;Biskajsk&#253;&rdquo; from the president&rsquo;s office, honouring No. 311 Squadron RAF.<\/p>\n<p>The jet story ended with Czech-built trainers and light fighters: the L-29 Delf&#237;n, the L-39C and armed L-39ZA, and finally the L-159 ALCA. In 1998 the air force still had 17 L-39ZAs. The base history lists the L-159 among its types but does not say how many were based here; jet flying at N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; stopped in 2013. Among older types the base also lists the Mi-1, its first helicopter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">03<\/span><span>From jets to rotors: the 2013 merger<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>In 2013 the army closed military flying at P&#345;erov and moved its helicopters to N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357;. At 10:27 on 24 September 2013 nine Mi-171&#352; transport helicopters took off from P&#345;erov and landed at N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; at noon, after a formation flight past Prost&#283;jov and Brno. The 23rd Helicopter Base had 16 Mi-171&#352;s in all: one was already at Sedlec after the Ramstein Rover 2013 exercise and six were in overhaul at LOM Praha and went straight to their new home.<\/p>\n<p>The army&rsquo;s own account says the move was uneventful. Its deputy commander, Colonel Michal Kytlica, reported that the flight went to plan without any difficulties, and organised flying from Sedlec was planned for early November. The same year, the army noted, jet flying at the base came to an end. On 1 December 2013 the two bases were merged into the 22nd Helicopter Air Force Base, with its headquarters at Sedlec near V&#237;cenice.<\/p>\n<p>The new base is organised in six squadrons. The 221st flies the combat helicopters, the 222nd the Mi-171&#352; transports for ground troops and special forces, and the 223rd to 226th repair aircraft, run communications, fire and rescue, biological protection and logistics. Its commanders have included Colonel Petr &#268;epelka, who handed over to Colonel Miroslav Svoboda from 1 November 2018, Rudolf Straka from 1 July 2019 and Petr Sl&#237;va from 1 July 2025.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">04<\/span><span>Goodbye Hind, hello Viper<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The Mi-24 had been the army&rsquo;s attack helicopter since the first four reached Prost&#283;jov on 24 August 1978. By the 2010s the survivors, including 17 Mi-35s received in the 2000s against Russian debt, flew with the 221st Squadron. On 6 June 2023 Captain Jaroslav &#352;imek, First Lieutenant Jaroslav Pali&#269;ka and Warrant Officer Pavel Sola&#345; flew the last live firing of a Czech Hind, two night attack runs with S-8 rockets and the 12.7 mm gun.<\/p>\n<p>The replacement was American. A contract signed on 12 December 2019 bought eight UH-1Y Venoms and four AH-1Z Vipers. The first two Vipers arrived at N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; inside a US Air Force C-17 on 26 July 2023, and the last pair on 13 June 2024. The United States is also giving eight more H-1s in recognition of Czech aid to Ukraine; iROZHLAS reported them in 2023 as six Vipers and two Venoms, for a final fleet of ten of each.<\/p>\n<p>On 14 October 2023 about 250 former Hind pilots and technicians came to N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; for the farewell, with two Mi-24Vs flying a display. CZDefence counts seven serious Mi-24 accidents in Czechoslovak and Czech service, four of them fatal, and none fatal after 1998. The last Mi-35s left service in early March 2024 and went to Ukraine. Czech instructors had also trained Afghan Mi-24 crews in Kabul from 2008 to 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Training the new crews took two years. In October 2024 the base certified its first Czech H-1 instructors, led by Lieutenant Colonel Marcel Kica, commander of the 221st and of the H-1 training group, with an American team staying into 2025. To guide the new helicopters a TACAN beacon was installed in July 2024 for 39.8 million koruna, the first of its model in Europe according to CzechAirForce.com.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">05<\/span><span>Tigers, floods and the eastern flank<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The 221st Squadron has belonged to the NATO Tiger Association since 2001. Its Mi-24\/35 &ldquo;Alien Tiger 2&rdquo; won the best tiger scheme in 2016, and at Araxos in Greece in May 2022 the squadron won the Tiger Games with two Hinds, probably the type&rsquo;s last big foreign exercise. After a four-year gap it returned to Araxos in May 2026 with two UH-1Y Venoms and took a Special Tiger Spirit award.<\/p>\n<p>At home the helicopters are the army&rsquo;s heavy lift in a disaster. In the floods of September 2024 N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357;&rsquo;s Mi-171&#352;s lifted 14 people out of cut-off areas and carried about 25 tonnes of aid. Two more went to Wroc&#322;aw in Poland from 16 September and, in 50 sorties and 30 flying hours, lifted more than 130 tonnes of sandbags to hold back the Oder.<\/p>\n<p>After Russian drones entered Polish airspace, the Czech government sent a helicopter unit to eastern Poland in September 2025, with about 100 soldiers per rotation drawn mostly from N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357;. Upgraded Mi-171&#352;Ms went first; two UH-1Y Venoms arrived on 18 March 2026 for the H-1&rsquo;s first foreign operation, and two AH-1Z Vipers took over near the Belarusian border in July 2026 to hunt Shahed-type drones.<\/p>\n<p>Allies also come to N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357;. From 23 to 29 November 2024 three French Mirage 2000Ds from Nancy-Ochey operated from the base under France&rsquo;s MORANE agile-deployment concept, rehearsing cross-servicing with Czech Gripen technicians before flying on to Romania. In September 2026 it was one of four sites of Ample Strike, a multinational close air support exercise that drew 26 JTAC teams from 19 countries and nearly 600 people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">06<\/span><span>GHOST 41 and the base&rsquo;s future<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>On Thursday 23 July 2026, at about 14:05 local time, a UH-1Y Venom returning from a routine training flight fell from about 50 metres within the N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; airfield and caught fire. One of the five on board, 21-year-old Senior Sergeant Kate&#345;ina Steinocherov&#225;, an aerial gunner, was killed; four were injured, two of them seriously according to CzechAirForce.com. It was the first fatal Czech military air accident since an L-159 crashed near Kol&#237;n in 2012, iROZHLAS reported.<\/p>\n<p>The army grounded all Venoms and Vipers, including the two Vipers in Poland, which Polish forces covered. It says the investigating commission is still working with several possible causes; the specialist site CzechAirForce.com discussed loss of tail-rotor effectiveness during a quick-stop manoeuvre in gusty wind as one hypothesis, stressing that it was not confirmed. The military police opened a case on suspicion of endangerment through negligence. After special inspections and crew retraining the H-1s flew again from 26 August 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; is being prepared for more. A Ministry of Defence study ordered in August 2023 plans a rebuilt runway, a parallel taxiway, a depot hangar for the H-1s and room for 20 H-1s, six heavy helicopters and, temporarily, 16 fifth-generation fighters, with the work in service by 2030. On the night of 4&ndash;5 May 1944 a Halifax dropped the four-man group Spelter over Kramol&#237;n in the T&#345;eb&#237;&#269; district, near the future airfield, to map the resistance in central Moravia and open radio contact with London. Captain B&#345;etislav Chrastina lost contact with the others at the start. Sergeant Jaroslav Kot&#225;sek was shot while escaping on 16 June 1944; Rudolf Novotn&#253; and Jan Vavrda survived with help from local families. A memorial stone was unveiled at the drop site on 5 May 2011.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"incs\" href=\"https:\/\/lznamest.mo.gov.cz\/o-nas\/vojenske-tradice\/vysadek-spelter-1944\">22nd Helicopter Air Force Base<\/a><\/article>\n<article>\n<div class=\"incd\">September 2004<\/div>\n<h3>Six killed in a British Lynx<\/h3>\n<p>During the Czech-British exercise Flying Rhino in 2004 a British military Lynx helicopter crashed in the Oslava river valley near Kuroslepy, a few kilometres from the base, and six soldiers were killed. The base marks the anniversary: on 9 September 2026 a Mi-171 from N&#225;m&#283;&#353;&#357; flew over the memorial, wreaths were laid, and the base commander Petr Sl&#237;va and the British defence attach&#233;, Colonel David Burrows, spoke.
