The airfield was proposed in 1932, built from 1935 and opened in 1937; German reconnaissance squadrons used it after Hungary entered the war on 26 June 1941, and Allied bombing wrecked it in the summer of 1944. Repairs began in 1948 and flight training resumed in the autumn of 1949. Hungarian MiG-15 conversion began on 1 July 1951, the 62nd Fighter Regiment arrived from Kunmadaras on 1 November 1952, and the 59th Fighter Regiment formed on 1 November 1958 and flew MiG-21s from 1962 to 1994.

On 28 April 1990 the regiment took the name of Dezső Szentgyörgyi, the Second World War fighter ace credited with 30 victories, and from 1991 it was the 59th Tactical Air Regiment. On 1 October 2000 it was reorganised as the 59th Szentgyörgyi Dezső Air Base, and on 1 December 2004 the fixed-wing units were moved under it from Szolnok. Twenty-eight MiG-29s, handed over by Russia against part of its state debt, arrived between 15 October and the end of November 1993 and flew until 7 December 2010. Their successor was the Gripen: the lease was signed on 21 December 2001, the first five arrived on 21 March 2006, and the type has held combat readiness since 15 December 2008. Four more arrived on 30 April and 24 June 2026, making 18 (16 C, 2 D); one crashed near Szolnok on 24 August 2026, leaving 17. The An-26 transport squadron moved here in December 2005, the KC-390 first visited for testing on 12 April 2024, and the first of two Hungarian KC-390s arrived in autumn 2024. The first three of 12 L-39NG Skyfox trainers were handed over here on 30 May 2025.

On 1 January 2023 the unit became the vitéz Szentgyörgyi Dezső 101st Air Wing; on 1 September 2026, under Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi’s restoration of historic names, it became the 59th Szentgyörgyi Dezső Air Wing again. Kecskemét is also the venue of the Kecskemét Air Show; the 1998 jubilee show (22–23 August) marked 150 years of the Hungarian army and 60 of its military aviation; the 2023 show was cancelled because of the war in Ukraine.

Satellite

Kecskemét from above

One runway, 2,499 m of concrete.Imagery: Esri, Maxar, Earthstar Geographics and the GIS user community

Close

The capabilities of the KC-390 usher in a new era in the history of the Hungarian air force

Zsolt KutnyánszkyState Secretary, Ministry of Defence, on the KC-390’s first visit to Kecskemét, 12 April 2024Defence.hu

We are proud of the Hungarian Air Force, which has now operated Gripen fighters for 20 years.

Lars TossmanHead of Saab’s Aeronautics business area, on the final Gripen deliveries to Kecskemét, June 2026Saab press release

At a glance

Kecskemét Air Base in numbers

Location & The airfield’s modern identity dates from the early 1950s, when Hungary built a jet fighter force on Soviet lines. The 66th Fighter Aviation Division formed a regiment at Kunmadaras in 1951 with Yak-9, Yak-11, Yak-18 and Zlín 381 aircraft, and MiG-15 conversion under Soviet pilots and technicians began on 1 July 1951.

In October 1952 the largest national military exercise since the war moved two squadrons to Kecskemét, and on 1 November 1952 the headquarters of the 66th Fighter Aviation Division and the 62nd Fighter Regiment transferred here from Kunmadaras.
