story<\/div>\n<h2>Larissa Air Base: what it was built for and what flies there now<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cols\">\n<div>\n<p>Larissa, in the Thessalian plain, is where Greek military aviation began. In September 1912 the four-pilot Aviators Company formed here, and on 5 October the first Greek war reconnaissance was flown on the Thessaly front. The field became the 2nd Aircraft Regiment in 1928, Larissa Air Base in 1934 and 110 Combat Wing in 1951, and in 1952 it received the first Greek jet squadron, 337 Squadron on F-84Gs. Through the Cold War almost every Greek fighter type passed through: F-84F, F-5, A-7H, F-4E and RF-4E, and from 1997 346 Squadron&rsquo;s F-16 Block 30s. The reconnaissance Phantoms of 348 Squadron flew here until 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Today the wing flies the F-16C\/D Block 52+ with 337 Squadron and the Pegasus II drones of the unmanned squadron, and the headquarters of the Hellenic Tactical Air Force has been in the city since 1953; NATO&rsquo;s Combined Air Operations Centre 7 operated at nearby Koutsohero until 2013, when its tasks passed to Torrej&#243;n in Spain. The airfield also served as Larissa&rsquo;s civil airport until 1997. In May 2018 the Pentagon announced a temporary deployment of US Air Force MQ-9 Reapers to Larissa. The 110 Combat Wing counts its history from 1912, when the Farman &ldquo;Daedalus&rdquo; landed here and the first air force company was set up. The Hellenic Air Force&rsquo;s own history puts it plainly: in late September 1912 the &ldquo;Aviators Company&rdquo;, four officer pilots, was set up in Larissa, the first combat air unit in Greece.<\/p>\n<p>The timing was not accidental. The First Balkan War was about to break out, and the Thessaly front ran north from here towards Ottoman Macedonia. The air force records that on 5 October 1912 the first war air reconnaissance mission took place on that front, flown, according to Wikipedia, by Lieutenant Dimitrios Kamberos. The official page does not say from which field the sortie took off, so this page does not claim that detail either.<\/p>\n<p>Between the wars the airfield grew into a permanent station. It became the 2nd Aircraft Regiment in 1928, the 2nd Larissa Group in 1932 and Larissa Air Base in 1934, four years after the Air Ministry made the air force an independent service. Pattle was already the leading Commonwealth ace of the Greek campaign, with most of his claims made against the Italians over Albania.<\/p>\n<p>Germany invaded on 6 April. Over the following week Pattle&rsquo;s claims mounted against Messerschmitts, Junkers and Dorniers. On 13 April Messerschmitt Bf 109s strafed Larissa as three Hurricanes were taking off; two experienced RAF pilots were killed, and two Bf 109s were claimed.
