class=\"kicker\">The story<\/div>\n<h2>Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton: what it was built for and what flies there now<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cols\">\n<div>\n<p>RNAS Yeovilton, commissioned as HMS Heron, lies about seven miles north of Yeovil in Somerset, beside the village of Ilchester. It is one of the Royal Navy&rsquo;s two principal air stations and, in the Navy&rsquo;s own words, &ldquo;one of the busiest military airfields in the UK&rdquo;. The Admiralty took 417 acres of farmland in 1939; Wikipedia lists its first commanding officer from March 1940, and the runways, delayed by bad drainage, were finished in 1941. It was a wartime fighter school, bombed by the Luftwaffe, and grew so crowded that satellites were opened at Charlton Horethorne and Henstridge in 1942.<\/p>\n<p>In 1952 Yeovilton became the Navy&rsquo;s shore base for all-weather fighters, and its runways were lengthened for jets in 1952 and 1957. Sea Venoms gave way to Sea Vixens and then, in 1969, to the first operational Phantom squadron. When the big carriers went, Yeovilton became the home of the commando helicopters and of the Sea Harrier, whose squadrons were based here from 1979 until the type retired in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Today the station is the Wildcat base of the Fleet Air Arm (815 and 825 Squadrons), the home of the Commando Helicopter Force (845, 846 and 847 Squadrons, under Joint Helicopter Command) and of 727 Squadron&rsquo;s Tutor grading flight, and since 2015 also of the Army&rsquo;s Wildcat regiment. The Fleet Air Arm Museum, opened in May 1964, sits on the airfield edge. The Navy&rsquo;s station page, written around 2013&ndash;2015, gives about 1,400 acres, 4,300 people and more than 100 aircraft; Wikipedia gives 452 hectares (about 1,120 acres), so the area figures differ. Westland, whose works were a few miles away in Yeovil, built a repair facility on the site. In May 1943 827 Squadron was here with Albacores, and it became the first squadron to receive the Barracuda in real numbers. By 1942 the airfield was so crowded that satellites were opened at Charlton Horethorne and Henstridge, with an air direction radar centre at Speckington Manor.
