It was a Soviet base from 1954, when the 735th Fighter Aviation Regiment arrived from Yaroslavl; the regiment flew MiG-15s, MiG-17s, Su-9s and MiG-23s before becoming a bomber regiment on the Su-24 in 1984, and between 1980 and 1989 it sent detachments forward to Kokaydy for combat duty over Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Uzbekistan took the base over with the regiment in 1992 and, according to Wikipedia, merged it with the 87th Separate Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment into the 60th Separate Mixed Aviation Brigade, the country&rsquo;s main strike and fighter formation. It was also where the national flying school&rsquo;s first cadet took off, in a Yak-52 on 25 April 1995.<\/p>\n<p>From October 2001 to November 2005 the base was the United States&rsquo; logistics hub for the war in Afghanistan, known as Camp Stronghold Freedom; about 7,000 US personnel served there over four years, according to Wikipedia and Military Times. After the Andijan events of May 2005 Tashkent told the Americans to leave, and they ceased operations on 21 November 2005. The base&rsquo;s later fame is darker: the fuel-soaked Soviet ground that US veterans link to cancers. Since 2019 it has housed the Institute of Military Aviation, the air force&rsquo;s officer school. For its first quarter-century here it defended Soviet Central Asian airspace: MiG-15s from 1950 to 1955, MiG-17s to 1969, Su-9 interceptors from 1961 and, from 1980, the MiG-23M. Wikipedia dates the Su-9 era to 1961&ndash;1978 and the MiG-23M to 1978; the two sources differ by two years.<\/p>\n<p>The Afghan war changed the regiment&rsquo;s job. It was renamed a fighter-bomber regiment in 1981 and a bomber regiment in 1984, when it converted to the swing-wing Su-24. Its chain of command moved with it, from the air defence divisions to the air force of the Turkestan Military District, then to the 49th and 73rd Air Armies. Ww2.dk records that the regiment deployed &ldquo;several times&rdquo; between 2 July 1980 and 2 January 1989 to Kokaydy, near Termez, for combat duty over Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Uzbekistan took the regiment over with the base &mdash; on 1 January 1992 according to ww2.dk, on 30 June 1992 according to Wikipedia. Kisner arrived. About 1,000 light infantry of the 10th Mountain Division followed from Fort Drum, and on 12 December 2001 the division&rsquo;s headquarters under Major General Franklin L.
