class=\"cols\">\n<div>\n<p>Butterworth sits on the mainland coast opposite Penang island, about eight kilometres east of George Town, and it has been the most international air base in Malaysia for most of its existence. The Royal Air Force developed the airfield on a care-and-maintenance basis in 1939 and opened it as RAF Station Butterworth in October 1941; Japanese bombers hit it on the first day of the Malayan campaign and the 25th Army captured it on 20 December 1941. The RAF returned and resumed flying in May 1946, and through the Malayan Emergency the station was part of its Far East Air Force.<\/p>\n<p>In 1957 the RAF closed the station and handed it to the Royal Australian Air Force, which took formal control on 30 June 1958 (Hugh Crowther&rsquo;s history gives July 1958). For three decades it was Australia&rsquo;s largest overseas base: Canberra bombers, Sabres and then Mirage IIIOs, and in the 1970s nearly 5,000 Australian personnel and dependants. Control passed to the Royal Malaysian Air Force in 1970, according to Wikipedia, but Australian fighter squadrons stayed until May 1988.<\/p>\n<p>Today Butterworth is home to Malaysia&rsquo;s F\/A-18D Hornets and, according to Wikipedia, Hawks and leased AW139 helicopters. It also hosts the headquarters of the Five Power Defence Arrangements&rsquo; Integrated Area Defence System, commanded by an Australian air vice-marshal, and an RAAF combat support squadron and maritime patrol detachment.
