class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"kicker\">The story<\/div>\n<h2>NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen: what it was built for and what flies there now<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cols\">\n<div>\n<p>Geilenkirchen is on German soil and is not a German base. That is the first thing to say about it, and almost everything else follows from it. The Royal Air Force built and ran the airfield from 1953 as RAF Geilenkirchen, one of the Clutch Stations placed near the Dutch border, as far west as West Germany allowed, because everything closer to the inner-German frontier was expected to be overrun in the first days of a war. RAF flying ended in January 1968 and the field went to the Luftwaffe in March, which put Flugk&#246;rpergeschwader 2 there in August 1968 with Pershing I and IA missiles, supported by a United States Army field artillery detachment and a nuclear weapons storage site immediately north of the airfield.<\/p>\n<p>On 31 March 1982 Germany formally transferred the base to NATO, and what the alliance built there was unprecedented: its first flying unit with multinational manning, owned and funded jointly and belonging to no single country. Construction had begun in 1980; the first Boeing E-3A was handed over on 25 January 1982, flying operations began that February, the E-3A Component was activated on 28 June 1982 and full operational capability was reached at the end of 1988. Eighteen aircraft were bought; fourteen remain. Because NATO has no aircraft register of its own they wear Luxembourg civil registrations with the prefix LX-N, Luxembourg&rsquo;s contribution to an alliance asset it cannot otherwise crew.<\/p>\n<p>About 1,400 military and civilian people work at Geilenkirchen, and the crews of the two operational squadrons and the training squadron are drawn from 19 of NATO&rsquo;s member states. A single mission crew is deliberately mixed. The component commander is a brigadier general and the post alternates between the United States Air Force and the German Luftwaffe; the deputy is always a colonel of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force Command sits here too. Forward operating bases at Konya in T&#252;rkiye, Aktion in Greece and Trapani in Italy, and a forward operating location at &#216;rland in Norway, extend the fleet&rsquo;s reach.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft are old &mdash; Boeing 707 airframes from the early 1980s, loud enough to be a running political problem on both sides of the border &mdash; and their replacement is the open question of the base&rsquo;s future. A Final Lifetime Extension Programme worth about a billion dollars is meant to keep fourteen aircraft flying to 2035. A plan to buy six Boeing E-7A Wedgetails, chosen in November 2023, was cancelled by the participating allies on 14 November 2025 after the United States dropped its own E-7 programme. At the 2026 NATO summit eleven allies announced the joint procurement of up to ten Saab GlobalEye aircraft instead. The noise has been a political fact of life for forty years.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">Peaks of up to 100 dB(A) have been measured in the centre of Geilenkirchen. A 2008 study put the base&rsquo;s economic contribution to the surrounding region at 275.8 million euros, of which 150.7 million was wages.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<hr class=\"divider\">\n<section id=\"deep\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"kicker\">Go deeper<\/div>\n<h2>The long version<\/h2>\n<div class=\"deep\">\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">01<\/span><span>Whose base is this?<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The Clutch Stations are among the more revealing artefacts of early Cold War planning. When the Royal Air Force needed bases in West Germany in the early 1950s it put them as far west as the map allowed &mdash; Geilenkirchen, Wildenrath, Br&#252;ggen, Laarbruch and N&#246;rvenich, clustered near the Dutch border &mdash; on the assumption that anything further east would be lost early. Geilenkirchen opened in 1953 and various RAF fighter squadrons flew from it for fifteen years.<\/p>\n<p>British flying stopped in January 1968 and the airfield passed to the Luftwaffe in March. What Germany put there was not aircraft but missiles: Flugk&#246;rpergeschwader 2 arrived in August 1968 with the Pershing I and later the Pershing IA, a nuclear-capable ballistic missile whose warheads were held under American custody. The United States Army&rsquo;s 85th Field Artillery Detachment provided that custody, and a nuclear weapons storage site sat immediately north of the airfield. The missile wing moved out to the Selfkant-Kaserne at Niederheid in 1981; the American detachment stayed until July 1991.<\/p>\n<p>Then the base changed hands again, and this time it stopped being anybody&rsquo;s national property. Germany transferred Geilenkirchen to NATO on 31 March 1982. Construction for the new role had started in 1980 and the first NATO personnel arrived the same year. The result is a legal oddity: a NATO installation on German territory, garrisoned by seventeen nations, whose aircraft are registered in Luxembourg and which is not part of the German order of battle at all. The Luftwaffe maintains a German national contingent there, but the base does not belong to it.<\/p>\n<p>The NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force Command also sits at Geilenkirchen, making one airfield in the Rhineland both the headquarters and the main operating base of the alliance&rsquo;s airborne early warning force.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>A wing that belongs to nobody<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>NATO ordered eighteen Boeing E-3A Sentries. The first was handed over in January 1982, flying operations from Geilenkirchen began in February, the E-3A Component was activated on 28 June 1982 and full operational capability came at the end of 1988. Fourteen aircraft remain: one was lost in an accident and three were retired in 2015, 2017 and 2018, one of them stripped for spares worth about forty million dollars in a salvage effort NATO called the 449 Retirement Project. Three Boeing 707 trainer and cargo aircraft were operated alongside them from 1985 until December 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The manning is the point of the place. About 1,400 military and civilian staff work at Geilenkirchen, and aircrew come from fifteen of NATO&rsquo;s member states &mdash; sixteen nations provide military personnel, while Luxembourg contributes the aircraft register and no people. The component has three wings, operations, logistics and base support, each commanded by a colonel from a different nation, and within the operations wing two operational squadrons and a training squadron.<\/p>\n<p>A mission crew is deliberately mixed. Three flight crew and around a dozen mission crew, tailored to the task, will routinely be drawn from several different countries at once, working in English to a common NATO standard. That sounds obvious now; in 1982 it was a genuine experiment, and the reason the E-3A Component is cited whenever anyone argues about whether multinational European formations can actually function.<\/p>\n<p>Command follows the same logic. The component commander is a brigadier general and the appointment alternates between the United States Air Force and the German Luftwaffe; the deputy commander is always a colonel of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Above them, the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force commander &mdash; a major general, alternating American and German &mdash; reports directly to SACEUR.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">03<\/span><span>What they have actually done<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The E-3A fleet spent the 1990s over the Balkans, first enforcing the no-fly zone over Bosnia and then supporting the air campaigns that ended the Bosnian and Kosovo wars. That was the work NATO had bought the aircraft for, and it was unglamorous: orbiting for hours at a time, building the air picture, handing off fighters.<\/p>\n<p>Then came 11 September 2001, and NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time in its history. The first alliance asset committed was the Geilenkirchen fleet, and it went in the direction nobody had planned for &mdash; westwards. Operation Eagle Assist ran from 9 October 2001 to 16 May 2002, with 830 crew from 13 NATO nations flying 360 operational sorties and nearly 4,300 hours over the United States while American AWACS crews were redeployed. European aircraft on Luxembourg registers guarding American cities was not a scenario in any pre-war plan.<\/p>\n<p>Afghanistan followed: from 2011 to 2014 NATO E-3As operated from Mazar-i-Sharif, flying 1,240 missions and 12,240 hours in support of ISAF. The fleet supported the Libya intervention in 2011 and the counter-Daesh coalition from 2016, and it has flown assurance and air policing support over NATO&rsquo;s eastern flank continuously since March 2014, intensified sharply after Russia&rsquo;s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Reach comes from the forward bases.
