there now<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cols\">\n<div>\n<p>Malmstrom opened in 1942 as Great Falls Army Air Base, a staging field for the lend-lease ferry route to Alaska and the Soviet Union, and was renamed in 1956 for Colonel Einar Axel Malmstrom, a former prisoner of war killed in a crash at the base. Its place in history was fixed in 1962: the 341st Strategic Missile Wing put the first Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles on alert here, and Alpha Flight was brought to readiness during the Cuban missile crisis while the site was still being built.<\/p>\n<p>The 341st Missile Wing still runs 150 Minuteman III silos spread across central Montana, an area of responsibility of roughly 35,000 square kilometres. The base airfield closed to fixed-wing traffic in 1996 and the runway is no longer usable, so the only aircraft here are the helicopters of the 40th Helicopter Squadron, which move security teams and maintenance crews around the missile field and are converting from the UH-1N to the MH-139A Grey Wolf. The Air Force&rsquo;s own fact sheet calls it the nation&rsquo;s largest intercontinental ballistic missile complex.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">150 launch facilities and 15 missile alert facilities spread over about 13,800 square miles, worked by roughly 4,000 people.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">02<\/div>\n<h3>The first Minuteman ever put on alert<\/h3>\n<p>During the Cuban Missile Crisis the Air Force rushed Malmstrom&rsquo;s brand-new Alpha Flight into a firing posture weeks before it was due. The very first Minuteman to stand alert anywhere in the world was the missile in launch facility Alpha-06, north-east of Great Falls. A roadside marker on U.S. 89 at Monarch still tells the story.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">Alpha-06 went on alert during the crisis of October 1962; the flight was not formally declared operational until 11 December 1962.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">03<\/div>\n<h3>America&rsquo;s gateway to Siberia<\/h3>\n<p>Before it was a missile base it was Great Falls Army Air Base, the southern end of the Alaska-Siberia ferry route. American pilots collected new fighters and bombers here and flew them north through Canada to Fairbanks, where Soviet crews signed for them and took them on across the Bering Strait. Almost no Americans followed them past Alaska.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">About 7,983 aircraft went up the route to the Soviet Union, with 133 lost to weather or pilot error along the way.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">04<\/div>\n<h3>Echo Flight, 16 March 1967<\/h3>\n<p>At a quarter to nine one March morning every missile in Echo Flight dropped off alert almost together, ten silos reporting the same fault. The engineering investigation blamed an electrical noise pulse and never identified where it came from. The episode has since been folded into a large body of UFO storytelling that the surviving Air Force paperwork does not support.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">All 10 launch facilities in Echo Flight went no-go at 0845 on 16 March 1967; the missiles were back on alert inside a day.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">05<\/div>\n<h3>The proficiency-test cheating scandal<\/h3>\n<p>In January 2014 the Air Force found that Malmstrom launch officers had been passing monthly proficiency-test answers to each other by text message. It grew from a handful of names into the worst crew-force integrity failure in the missile business, and it cost the wing its commander and most of its operational leadership.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">About 100 officers were investigated, 91 were disciplined and nine commanders and senior leaders were removed or resigned.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">06<\/div>\n<h3>Home of the Grey Wolf<\/h3>\n<p>Malmstrom got the Air Force&rsquo;s first operational MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters, the machines replacing the UH-1N Twin Hueys that had been guarding and reaching the missile field since the 1970s. The new helicopter is markedly faster, carries twice the troops and can cross the field without the fuel stops the Huey needed.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">Initial operational capability was declared on 10 August 2026, announced by Air Force Global Strike Command on 31 August 2026.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<hr class=\"divider\">\n<section id=\"deep\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"kicker\">Go deeper<\/div>\n<h2>The long version<\/h2>\n<div class=\"deep\">\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">01<\/span><span>The largest missile field in America<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The 341st Missile Wing keeps 150 Minuteman III launch facilities and 15 missile alert facilities across roughly 13,800 square miles of north-central Montana, which the Air Force describes as the nation&rsquo;s largest intercontinental ballistic missile complex. Three squadrons &mdash; the 10th, 12th and 490th &mdash; each hold five alert facilities and 50 silos. About 4,000 people serve the wing, more than 3,300 of them active duty and roughly 600 civilians.<\/p>\n<p>The field used to be much larger still. A fourth squadron, the 564th, was activated on 1 April 1966 as the twentieth and last Minuteman squadron the Air Force ever stood up, and with it the complex spread beyond 23,500 square miles. That is the figure older references quote, and it is right for 1967 to 2008. The 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review cut the deployed Minuteman III force from 500 missiles to 450, and the 564th&rsquo;s fifty missiles came out from 12 July 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Each flight is one hardened capsule buried under a topside support building, manned around the clock by a two-officer crew, plus ten silos scattered across the farmland around it. Maintenance teams, facility managers and security convoys reach them by road, and the driving distances, not the missiles, set the rhythm of the day. That is why a base with no runway keeps a helicopter squadron.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>The first Minuteman alert, October 1962<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Malmstrom was chosen on 17 December 1959 as the first Minuteman launching site, and the 341st Strategic Missile Wing was activated on 15 July 1961 as Strategic Air Command&rsquo;s first Minuteman wing. Construction on Alpha Flight&rsquo;s launch control centre and silos began on 16 March 1961. The first missile reached the base by rail on 23 July 1962 and was lowered into launch facility Alpha-09 on 27 July. Alpha Flight was handed over to the wing on 24 October 1962, in the middle of the Cuban crisis.<\/p>\n<p>What happened next is the base&rsquo;s defining story and it is routinely told loosely. Crews did not have a finished, certified weapon system. The Air Force chronology of Wing I records that the missiles put up in October 1962 were in a posture that &ldquo;more closely approached emergency combat status than true alert&rdquo;. The first missile to reach that state was the one in Alpha-06. The Montana marker at Monarch and the wing histories date it to 26 October 1962; the Air Force chronology and the Association of Air Force Missileers put the flight on alert on 27 October.<\/p>\n<p>The formal milestones came later. The first two flights of model A Minuteman I were not declared operational until 11 December 1962, the 10th Strategic Missile Squadron reached full operational status on 28 February 1963, and the whole 150-missile wing was turned over to Strategic Air Command on 3 July 1963. The honest version is that an incomplete, hand-forced capability stood up at the height of the crisis, and the paperwork caught up months later.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">03<\/span><span>Great Falls and the road to Siberia<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Construction of Great Falls Army Air Base &mdash; locally just East Base, to distinguish it from Gore Field on the bluff above town &mdash; began on 8 June 1942, and the first B-17 Flying Fortress landed on 30 November that year. Four bombardment groups trained here between November 1942 and October 1943, using satellite fields at Cut Bank, Glasgow and Lewistown. But the work that made Great Falls matter to the war was not bomber training.<\/p>\n<p>Great Falls became the southern terminus of the Alaska-Siberia lend-lease ferry route. The 7th Ferrying Group at Gore Field was ordered to organise it; aircraft built in southern California and elsewhere were flown to Montana, then north through Canada along the Northwest Staging Route to Ladd Field at Fairbanks. There Soviet acceptance inspectors checked each machine and Soviet pilots signed for it and flew it on across the Bering Strait. The count everyone quotes is therefore a count of handovers at Fairbanks, not of take-offs from Montana.<\/p>\n<p>Over about 21 months, 7,983 aircraft were delivered to the Soviets by that route, with 133 lost to weather or pilot error. The Malmstrom base history puts the number processed through Great Falls between 1942 and 1945 at approximately 8,000, the same traffic counted at the other end of the pipe. The aircraft were mostly Bell P-39 Airacobras and P-63 Kingcobras, Douglas A-20 Havocs and North American B-25 Mitchells.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">04<\/span><span>Echo Flight, and what can actually be said about it<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The documented core is short and not in dispute. The 341st Strategic Missile Wing unit history records that on 16 March 1967 at 0845 all sites in Echo Flight shut down with no-go indications on channels 9 and 12 of the Voice Reporting Signal Assembly. Ten Minuteman missiles lost strategic alert in quick succession. They were restored within about a day. Boeing and the Ogden Air Materiel Area ran an engineering investigation into whether a noise pulse could have been generated at the launch control facility.<\/p>\n<p>That investigation is where precision matters. The declassified engineering analysis concluded that an electrical noise pulse of some kind had shut the flight down, with characteristics compared to the electromagnetic pulse from a nuclear burst, and identified the logic coupler in the guidance and control system as the component most vulnerable to it. It did not establish where the pulse came from. The Air Force report also stated flatly that rumours of unidentified flying objects around Echo Flight at the time of the fault &ldquo;were disproven&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, a retired officer, Robert Salas, has claimed since the mid-1990s that security police reported an object over a missile alert facility minutes before missiles dropped off alert, and he has placed his own experience at Oscar Flight, later in March 1967. That claim is an account, not a record: his former crew commander has said he does not recall a UFO event, no corroborating shutdown at Oscar Flight has been produced from the unit histories, and the date and location of his account have changed over the years.<\/p>\n<p>A third layer arrived in June 2025, when the Wall Street Journal reported that a Pentagon review attributed a 1960s Minuteman shutdown to a test of an electromagnetic-pulse simulator. Researchers have objected that no transportable EMP simulator of that kind is documented as available in 1967. Three things sit side by side here: a real, documented technical failure; an eyewitness claim that has never been corroborated; and a late official attribution that is itself contested. They should not be merged.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">05<\/span><span>2014: the crew force caught cheating<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>In January 2014 an unrelated drug investigation turned up text messages in which Malmstrom launch officers were passing around answers to the monthly proficiency tests that certify them to sit alert. The number implicated went from 34 to 92 within a fortnight. By the time Air Force Global Strike Command reported out on 26 March 2014, roughly 100 officers had been investigated, 91 were disciplined and nine had the allegations against them left unsubstantiated and went back to work.<\/p>\n<p>The leadership consequences were the widest in the modern missile force. Colonel Robert Stanley, commander of the 341st Missile Wing, resigned. Colonel Mark Schuler, commander of the 341st Operations Group, was removed, along with the group deputy commander, the commanders of the 10th, 12th and 490th Missile Squadrons, the commander of the 341st Operations Support Squadron, two directors of operations and a standardisation and evaluation officer. None of them was accused of cheating.<\/p>\n<p>The published breakdown of conduct is worth reading carefully, because the totals do not match cleanly. Air Force Global Strike Command listed 79 officers by category &mdash; 15 who sent, received and solicited material, 13 who sent and received, four who only sent, nine who solicited and received, 30 who only received, three who solicited without receiving and five who knew and did not report it. The overall disciplinary figure given at the same time was 91. In October 2014 the Air Force began involuntary discharge proceedings against 15 officers.<\/p>\n<p>The response went past punishment. Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James tied the scandal to the physical state of the force, funding 19 million dollars in fiscal 2014 for launch control centre refurbishment and infrastructure repairs, with a further 3 million identified by Twentieth Air Force for quality of life.
