The 8th Tactical Fighter Wing became the Wolf Pack over North Vietnam while flying from Ubon, and brought the name, the tail code and a combat record to Korea in 1974. No other wing on the peninsula is named after an ambush.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">Seven MiG-21s confirmed destroyed in roughly ten minutes on 2 January 1967 during Operation Bolo, with no American losses; the wing ended the Vietnam War with 38.5 confirmed aerial victories, more than any other Air Force wing.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">02<\/div>\n<h3>The airfield that was K-8<\/h3>\n<p>Fifth Air Force numbered Korean airfields rather than wrestle with their names, and Kunsan drew K-8. Between 1951 and 1953 it was a busy jet and bomber field on the Yellow Sea, then it emptied out and spent most of two decades as little more than a caretaker station.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">Four different United States Air Force wings flew from K-8 during the Korean War &mdash; the 27th Fighter-Escort, the 3rd Bombardment, the 474th Fighter-Bomber and the 49th Fighter-Bomber.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">03<\/div>\n<h3>Twenty concrete garages<\/h3>\n<p>Everything the wing owns sits on one airfield inside North Korean missile range, so the aircraft live in hardened shelters. The newest ones can run an F-16 engine with the doors closed, which is the difference between a shed and a place you can fight from.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">20 third-generation hardened aircraft shelters, built over 51 months for $125 million of Republic of Korea money and handed over at Kunsan on 31 July 2020.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">04<\/div>\n<h3>A base of one-year strangers<\/h3>\n<p>Kunsan has no family housing, no base school and almost no spouses. Military members serve a single unaccompanied year and live in dormitories, which makes the wing a unit that is completely rebuilt every twelve months and knows it.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">About 2,800 people work at the installation, and almost all the military members are on 12-month unaccompanied tours in on-base dormitories.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">05<\/div>\n<h3>One runway and no alternative<\/h3>\n<p>Kunsan has a single 9,000-foot strip. When it had to be rebuilt in 2023 the wing could not simply move to the parallel: it packed up and flew to Osan, and ran its year from somebody else&rsquo;s ramp.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">More than 1,500 concrete slabs replaced for $22 million between April and 30 August 2023, with roughly 600 people and most of the wing&rsquo;s F-16s displaced to Osan for close to five months.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">06<\/div>\n<h3>The Super Squadron years<\/h3>\n<p>Between 2024 and 2026 Seventh Air Force tested whether a few very large fighter squadrons beat several ordinary ones. Kunsan supplied the aircraft, Osan got them, and the Wolf Pack spent two years as the base that lent out its jets.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">31 F-16s and about 1,000 airmen moved from Kunsan to Osan in the second phase of the test in 2025, on top of the 9 aircraft and 150 airmen sent in 2024; Pacific Air Forces then ordered the fleet reset to three squadrons across the two bases.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<hr class=\"divider\">\n<section id=\"deep\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"kicker\">Go deeper<\/div>\n<h2>The long version<\/h2>\n<div class=\"deep\">\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">01<\/span><span>A Japanese interceptor strip that became K-8<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The airfield was laid out in 1938, when Korea was a Japanese colony and the occupying forces wanted a fighter-interceptor strip on the Yellow Sea coast near the Kum River estuary. The base&rsquo;s own fact sheet gives that one sentence and moves on, which is itself telling: the United States Air Force inherited a piece of the occupation and has never claimed to have built it. Americans used it briefly after 1945, then withdrew and handed it to the Republic of Korea in 1949.<\/p>\n<p>The Korean War found Kunsan with no American flying units on it. North Korean troops took the field on 13 July 1950 and it was recovered that autumn, though the date is not agreed: the base fact sheet and GlobalSecurity both say 30 September, with GlobalSecurity crediting the 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry, while Wikipedia places it in October. What is settled is the number. Fifth Air Force gave Korean airfields alphanumeric codes, and Kunsan became K-8.<\/p>\n<p>Jets needed more runway than the Japanese had built, so engineer units went to work through 1951. The 27th Fighter-Escort Wing brought F-84 Thunderjets that April, the 3rd Bombardment Wing arrived on 22 August with B-26 Invaders and flew them at night, and the 474th and 49th Fighter-Bomber Wings followed. On 14 September Captain John S. Walmsley Jr. launched from Kunsan, disabled a supply train, then flew its length with his searchlight burning so a second B-26 could finish it. He was shot down and received a posthumous Medal of Honor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>The name came from Thailand<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The 8th Tactical Fighter Wing spent 1965 to 1974 at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base flying F-4 Phantoms over North Vietnam, and it is there, not in Korea, that it became the Wolf Pack. Colonel Robin Olds took command in September 1966 and used the phrase for the way his crews hunted in groups. That is the thread tying a Thai airfield to a Korean one: the lineage moved, and the name and tail code moved with it.<\/p>\n<p>The operation that fixed the name was Operation Bolo on 2 January 1967. Rules of engagement kept American aircraft away from North Vietnamese airfields, so MiG-21 pilots chose their fights, and they chose bomb-laden F-105s over F-4s. Olds and Captain John Stone had F-4s fly the F-105 profile exactly: same route, call signs, speeds and electronic signature. Seventh Air Force&rsquo;s own account has Olds telling his crews &ldquo;Okay, Wolf Pack, go get &rsquo;em!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In about ten minutes the wing shot down seven MiG-21s for certain and two more probably, and lost nothing. Two more fell four days later. Between them the engagements took out close to half of North Vietnam&rsquo;s most modern fighters in five days, and the MiG force stayed grounded. Olds&rsquo;s exact wording is not agreed even inside the Air Force, and Kunsan&rsquo;s own history page renders the line differently.<\/p>\n<p>The wing came to Kunsan on 16 September 1974 on paper rather than in aircraft. It was transferred without personnel or equipment and absorbed the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing, which had flown F-4s from Kunsan since March 1971, together with its 35th and 80th squadrons. Both flew F-4Ds until 1981, when the 80th became the first overseas Air Force unit to convert to the F-16. The wing dropped &ldquo;Tactical&rdquo; from its title in February 1992.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">03<\/span><span>Fight tonight: concrete, sirens and dispersal<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Kunsan&rsquo;s mission statement is three clauses long &mdash; defend the base, accept follow-on forces, and take the fight north &mdash; and the order is the point. Osan sits roughly 50 miles from the North Korean border and Kunsan about 80 miles further south again, which buys warning time but not safety. Everything the wing owns is on one airfield, so surviving the first hours is the precondition for the rest. An Army PAC-3 Patriot battalion sits on the base and Korean KF-16s share the runway.<\/p>\n<p>The concrete is the visible half. The Republic of Korea paid $125 million for 20 third-generation hardened aircraft shelters, delivered over 51 months and opened on 31 July 2020. Unlike the older shelters these have ventilation and engine exhaust systems, so an F-16 can run its engine with the doors shut, plus new fire suppression and storm drainage. Colonel Christopher Hammond, then commanding the wing, framed the win as being for the maintainers as much as for the aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>The other half is the exercise calendar. Beverly Pack is the wing&rsquo;s recurring readiness exercise, called by Seventh Air Force its largest agile combat employment generation, deployment and sustainment exercise. Beverly Pack 25-1 started on 12 January 2025 and folded in what the Air Force called the first agile combat employment operation flown on the Korean peninsula, pushing F-16s and airmen to Gwangju Air Base as a simulated forward location. The wing returned to Gwangju from 9 to 14 March 2025 for Freedom Shield 25.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">04<\/span><span>A wing rebuilt from scratch every year<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>About 2,800 people work at Kunsan: American airmen, soldiers, United States civilians and Korean employees. Almost every military member is there on a 12-month unaccompanied tour and lives in an on-base dormitory. There is no family housing and effectively no spouse population. An assignment to Osan or Kadena is a posting you move a household for; Kunsan is a year among people you met on arrival and will mostly never meet again.<\/p>\n<p>That produces a particular kind of unit. Everyone leaves within a year, so institutional memory lives in written procedure rather than in people, and the wing is reconstituted annually. With no commute and no family on the peninsula, the working week is simply the week. The base&rsquo;s social centre is the Loring Club, which shares its name with Major Charles J. On 10 November 2008 Pacific Air Forces relieved Colonel Bryan Bearden halfway through his tour after the 8th Maintenance Group was rated marginal in an April compliance inspection and marginal again in September; his successor was picked partly because he was already nearby. In 2023 Colonel Timothy Murphy, who took command on 25 May, handed over on 8 November after about five months, saying the decision was best for his family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">05<\/span><span>Kunsan and Gunsan, seven miles apart<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The base lies seven miles west of Gunsan city, and the relationship has the texture of every long-term foreign base: useful, resented, negotiated. South Korea&rsquo;s military noise compensation law, in force since 2020, pays residents inside designated noise zones a monthly sum. For the Gunsan airfield the second round of awards, settled on 2 August 2022, came to 748 million won shared among 2,225 people, up from 703 million. A city official said Gunsan would press to change the law so those under fighter noise were fairly paid.<\/p>\n<p>Land is the other friction. A plan to expand the base by 315 acres &mdash; 196 already deeded to United States Forces Korea after the Korean War and 119 to be bought from private owners &mdash; required 92 households to move. The Ministry of National Defense offered around $65 per pyong against a market value nearer $108. Only 31 households had agreed when Stars and Stripes reported the dispute, and a local leader warned it would become a second Pyeongtaek crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Gunsan&rsquo;s civil airport is not a separate airport at all: its terminal works off the American military runway, with the limits that implies. That is part of why North Jeolla province is building Saemangeum International Airport on reclaimed ground next door, a 807.7 billion won project with a 2,500-metre runway aimed at 2028. The reclamation itself walled off some 401 square kilometres of estuary behind a 33-kilometre seawall opened in 2010, and 46 civic groups sued over the airport in September 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">06<\/span><span>Other people&rsquo;s crises, arriving by air<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>When North Korea seized USS Pueblo on 23 January 1968, the United States flew more than 200 aircraft to Korea and Japan under Operation Combat Fox. The 4th Tactical Fighter Wing&rsquo;s 72 F-4Ds reached Kunsan on 29 January and 14 Misawa-based F-4Cs of the 356th followed. Air National Guard F-100s of the 354th arrived that July and stayed until June 1970. Until then the only permanently assigned flying unit at Kunsan had been a Korean Air Force F-86 squadron.<\/p>\n<p>The 1993&ndash;94 nuclear crisis delivered hardware of another kind. General Gary Luck asked for about three dozen Patriot launchers in February 1994, Seoul and Washington agreed in March, and the 1st Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery ended up with batteries at Kunsan and Suwon. The Patriots never went home, and the air defence battalion at Kunsan today is their successor. United States Forces Korea runs the Courageous Channel noncombatant evacuation exercise twice a year, and the October 2017 iteration drew more than 1,700 people at Osan alone.
