En mayo de 1947, Lockheed inici\u00f3 el dise\u00f1o de un entrenador biplaza por su cuenta. La soluci\u00f3n fue precisa: tomar el fuselaje del F-80, insertar un tap\u00f3n de 67,6 cm delante del ala y otro de 30,5 cm detr\u00e1s, instalar un segundo asiento con doble mando bajo una cabina alargada de una sola pieza y poner el resultado en producci\u00f3n. El prototipo vol\u00f3 el 22 de marzo de 1948 con el piloto de pruebas Tony LeVier a los mandos. La producci\u00f3n se extendi\u00f3 hasta 1959. Para entonces, se hab\u00edan construido 6.557 T-33: 5.691 por Lockheed en Burbank, 656 por Canadair en Quebec y 210 por Kawasaki en Jap\u00f3n, lo que lo convierte en uno de los entrenadores a reacci\u00f3n m\u00e1s producidos de la historia. M\u00e1s de 30 fuerzas a\u00e9reas lo utilizaron. El avi\u00f3n de entrenamiento a reacci\u00f3n m\u00e1s utilizado del mundo<\/strong><br>Se fabricaron 6.557 unidades entre Lockheed, Canadair y Kawasaki. Turborreactor Allison J33: un descendiente de Frank Whittle.<\/strong><br>El J33-A-35 ofrece un empuje de 24 kN (5400 lbf), un desarrollo directo del dise\u00f1o original de turborreactor de Sir Frank Whittle. Al tomar una estructura ya probada en combate sobre Corea y a\u00f1adir una segunda cabina, Lockheed ofreci\u00f3 a los alumnos pilotos la experiencia real desde el primer d\u00eda. El fuselaje se alarg\u00f3 aproximadamente un metro para acomodar al instructor detr\u00e1s del alumno, ambos sentados bajo una cabina de una sola pieza con un panel central a prueba de balas. Los controles estaban completamente duplicados en la parte delantera y trasera. El ala, el empenaje, el tren de aterrizaje y el motor se mantuvieron pr\u00e1cticamente id\u00e9nticos a los del F-80: un \u00fanico turborreactor Allison J33, que culmin\u00f3 en la variante A-35 con una potencia de 2450 kg de empuje. Una cabina presurizada y una estructura reforzada para acrobacias a\u00e9reas y entrenamiento instrumental le otorgaron al T-Bird una capacidad que super\u00f3 a casi todos sus contempor\u00e1neos.
