1940 and has been in use since 1941, originally as the V&#225;zquez Sagastiz&#225;bal military aerodrome. Its 3,596 m runway made it one of the three Spanish air bases shared with the United States after the 1953 Pact of Madrid: Strategic Air Command B-47s began Reflex alert rotations here on 13 May 1958.<\/p>\n<p>Today it is the home of Ala 11 and its Eurofighter squadrons, and it still hosts American forces. The USAF&rsquo;s 496th Air Base Squadron has supported US forces here since 1995, and from 2013 the US Marine Corps kept a crisis-response force for Africa at Mor&#243;n; in May 2015 Spain approved a permanent US presence of up to 3,000 troops. Although it carries the name of the nearby town of Mor&#243;n de la Frontera, the base technically sits in the municipality of Arahal. Construction of what was first called the V&#225;zquez Sagastiz&#225;bal military aerodrome began in 1940, the year after the Civil War ended, and the field was operational by 1941.<\/p>\n<p>Its first job was training fighter pilots for the new Ej&#233;rcito del Aire, created as an independent service on 7 October 1939 from the victorious Nationalist air arm. The brief for this page asked for the aerodrome&rsquo;s Civil War origins: no source read for this page shows the site in use as an airfield during the war itself, or explains who V&#225;zquez Sagastiz&#225;bal was, so both remain unverified. What the sources do agree on is that Mor&#243;n was a product of the immediate post-war rebuilding of Franco&rsquo;s air force.<\/p>\n<p>The building of the American base in the 1950s changed the town as much as the airfield. Local histories record that the works drove urban growth and commerce and brought residents into daily contact with Americans; when the construction jobs ended, many workers had to emigrate in the 1960s and 1970s, to Madrid, Catalonia and Valencia and to France, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland. Mor&#243;n de la Frontera had 27,228 inhabitants in 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>The Pact of Madrid and the Strategic Air Command<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The Pact of Madrid of 23 September 1953 traded American military and economic aid to Franco&rsquo;s isolated regime for the use of Spanish bases: air bases at Torrej&#243;n, Zaragoza and Mor&#243;n, and the naval base at Rota. At Mor&#243;n the US Navy&rsquo;s Bureau of Yards and Docks spent some three years building a heavy bomber base with a runway now 3,596 metres long. The 3973rd Air Base Group was formally activated there on 1 June 1957.<\/p>\n<p>Strategic Air Command used Mor&#243;n for Operation Reflex, in which B-47 medium bomber crews rotated overseas, usually for 90 days, to hold nuclear alert closer to Soviet targets. The first B-47s arrived on 13 May 1958; by mid-1958 SAC kept six bombers on alert at each Reflex location. Some six weeks after the bombers came the F-100D Super Sabres of the 1st Fighter Day Squadron, commanded between 1957 and 1960 by Chuck Yeager, the first man to fly faster than sound.<\/p>\n<p>Tankers followed the bombers. The first KC-135 Stratotanker supporting the airborne-alert Chrome Dome missions arrived on 29 April 1962, and the last B-47 left on 3 April 1963 as Reflex wound down. On 17 January 1966 a KC-135 out of Mor&#243;n collided with a B-52G during refuelling over Palomares, and on 29 January Spain banned US flights carrying nuclear weapons over its territory. The same year Mor&#243;n passed from SAC to US Air Forces in Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">03<\/span><span>Caretaker years, the Shuttle and the 1988 agreement<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Without bombers, Mor&#243;n shrank. In 1969 it became a standby dispersal base, and it was put into &ldquo;modified caretaker status&rdquo;; sources date that step either to 1969 (English Wikipedia) or to November 1971 (GlobalSecurity and the Spanish encyclopedia). The 7473rd Combat Support Squadron was inactivated in 1976, the year the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation took effect, and a detachment of the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing from Torrej&#243;n took its place. An agreement that took effect in May 1983 allowed the United States to station up to 15 tanker aircraft there.<\/p>\n<p>In March 1984 NASA selected Mor&#243;n as a Transoceanic Abort Landing site, where a Shuttle losing an engine during launch could come down, and a permanent microwave landing system was installed in 1986. It remained one of the last four such sites, with Zaragoza, Istres and RAF Fairford; the abort mode was never used in the programme&rsquo;s history.<\/p>\n<p>The Defence Cooperation Agreement signed in Madrid on 1 December 1988 and published in the BOE on 6 May 1989 still governs the base.
