Soviet MiGs, Operation Green Sea and gunships on the Sierra Leone border<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cols\">\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">1958&ndash;1970: a Soviet-equipped air arm for a non-aligned state<\/h3>\n<p>Guinea broke with France in 1958, and Ahmed S&#233;kou Tour&#233;&rsquo;s government turned to the Eastern bloc for almost everything, including an air force. According to Wikipedia&rsquo;s account, the Force a&#233;rienne was formed after independence with Soviet deliveries of ten MiG-17F fighters and two MiG-15UTI trainers, followed by An-2, An-12, An-14, Il-14 and Il-18V transports and Mi-4 helicopters. Eastern-bloc deliveries added three Czechoslovak L-29 jet trainers and six Yak-11s; Romania later added licence-built IAR-316 Alouette III and two IAR-330L Puma helicopters. Delivery dates and serials for most of these types were not found in sources that could be checked, and no official Guinean history of the service was reachable. What is clear is the pattern: aircraft arrived as political aid, in small numbers, and Guinea depended on its donors for spares and instructors.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">1970&ndash;1971: Operation Green Sea and the MiGs over Freetown<\/h3>\n<p>The MiGs mattered once. On the night of 21&ndash;22 November 1970 about 200 Guinean dissidents and 220 Portuguese soldiers landed at Conakry in Operation Green Sea; Wikipedia gives the aims as the overthrow of Tour&#233;, the capture of the PAIGC leader Am&#237;lcar Cabral, the rescue of Portuguese prisoners and the destruction of the naval and air assets of the PAIGC and its Guinean supporters. Wikipedia&rsquo;s MiG-17 article adds that the Portuguese wanted to destroy the MiG-17s on the ground, because tests had shown that their own Fiat G.91s were outclassed by the MiG, but that the Guineans had moved the fighters to Lab&#233; two days earlier; the attackers reached the airport and ignored it. In March 1971, when Guinea sent troops to Freetown to support the government of Sierra Leone, two Guinean MiGs made a low pass over the city.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">1986&ndash;2007: MiG-21s, and how few of them ever flew<\/h3>\n<p>In 1986 the Soviet Union delivered eight MiG-21s and one two-seat MiG-21U to replace the last MiG-17s. Sources disagree even on the variant: the Wikipedia article on the armed forces says MiG-21PFM, the MiG-21 operators list, citing Gordon, Dexter and Komissarov, says MiG-21MF. The same list says five were later restored to airworthiness in Russia, that one of them crashed into a television tower in 2007, and that three were still in service in December 2021. FlightGlobal&rsquo;s World Air Forces 2025 lists no fixed-wing combat aircraft at all, and Military Africa wrote in June 2026 that the inventory &ldquo;reportedly&rdquo; includes two MiG-21s but that most of the fleet is stored or unserviceable. Whether any Guinean MiG-21 can still fly is therefore not settled, and this page treats the type as effectively out of service.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">2000&ndash;2003: helicopter gunships on the Sierra Leone and Liberia borders<\/h3>\n<p>The air arm&rsquo;s only sustained combat came at the turn of the century. When the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and Guinean dissidents raided across the border from Sierra Leone and Liberia in 2000, Guinea answered with artillery and helicopter gunships. Human Rights Watch found that at least 42 civilians, including 11 children, were killed in at least 13 Guinean helicopter and artillery attacks on rebel-held areas of Kambia, Bombali and Koinadugu districts between September 2000 and April 2001, and that Sierra Leonean rights groups denounced indiscriminate attacks by a Guinean gunship. Wikipedia&rsquo;s account of the war calls the cross-border raids very effective in routing the RUF. Guinea was also LURD&rsquo;s main backer in the Second Liberian Civil War of 1999&ndash;2003, and Wikipedia&rsquo;s Mi-24 article says it was alleged to have given the insurgents air support; no finding on that allegation was checked for this page.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">2013&ndash;2021: crashes, and an army in power<\/h3>\n<p>Two crashes frame the next decade. On 11 February 2013 a CASA\/IPTN CN-235 carrying the army chief of staff, General Souleymane K&#233;l&#233;fa Diallo, crashed near Charlesville, about 8 km from Roberts International Airport in Liberia; Liberia&rsquo;s information minister said ten people were on board and none survived, while a source close to Guinea&rsquo;s presidency told Al Jazeera there were 18. On 6 August 2019 an &#201;cureuil helicopter of the air force came down in the sea off Conakry; the defence ministry later named the two pilots who died, Colonel Abdoulaye Diallo and Second Lieutenant S&#233;kou Cond&#233;. On 5 September 2021 Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya&rsquo;s Special Forces Group seized power and detained President Alpha Cond&#233;; the military National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) has governed since, and Doumbouya won the 2025 presidential election.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">2024&ndash;2026: decrees, drones and two new gunships<\/h3>\n<p>Since 2024 the military government has reorganised the service by decree. A decree of 13 July 2024 set out the missions of the Air Force General Staff (EMAR): to watch over and defend national airspace and to support the defence and security forces. On 21 July 2025 a drone squadron, ES-Dro, was created at the main air base in Conakry, with secondary flights planned at regional bases; no drone types were named. A decree of 15 December 2025 appointed commanders for six air bases: Conakry, Bok&#233;, Lab&#233;, Faranah, Kankan and N&rsquo;Z&#233;r&#233;kor&#233;. The aircraft are another matter. FlightGlobal counts seven helicopters (three Mi-24\/25, two Mi-17 and two SA 330 Puma), and in June 2026 photographs and a promotional video showed at least two Mi-35P gunships delivered from Russia, the first new combat aircraft in decades.
