El capit\u00e1n Gary Foust, un experimentado piloto de caza del 71.er Escuadr\u00f3n de Interceptores de Caza, con base en la Base A\u00e9rea Malmstrom en Montana, estaba realizando un ejercicio de entrenamiento en una fr\u00eda ma\u00f1ana de febrero. No se trataba de vuelos de entrenamiento prudentes, sino de vuelos reales, del tipo que exige concentraci\u00f3n absoluta y una t\u00e9cnica impecable.<\/p>\n\n<p>Entonces algo sali\u00f3 mal. La causa exacta se ha perdido en la historia, pero lo que importa es el resultado: el F-106 entr\u00f3 en barrena plana.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Giro plano: El desaf\u00edo definitivo<\/h2>\n\n<p>Un giro plano es la peor pesadilla de todo piloto de caza. A diferencia de un giro convencional, donde el morro cae y la aeronave tiene cierto flujo de aire hacia adelante, un giro plano es una p\u00e9rdida de control del vuelo en la que la aeronave da vueltas casi horizontalmente, girando sobre su eje vertical con un m\u00ednimo movimiento hacia adelante. Los procedimientos de recuperaci\u00f3n no funcionan. Las alas han perdido sustentaci\u00f3n. Las superficies de control se clavan en el aire muerto. Y con cada segundo que pasa, la gravedad arrastra la aeronave hacia abajo.<\/p>\n\n<p>Foust lo intent\u00f3 todo. Aplic\u00f3 los controles de recuperaci\u00f3n, luch\u00f3 contra la palanca de mando, consumi\u00f3 combustible en un ascenso desesperado para ganar velocidad y recuperar el control del avi\u00f3n. Nada funcion\u00f3. El F-106 permaneci\u00f3 atrapado en una barrena plana, descendiendo, girando, incontrolable.<\/p>\n\n<p>Para cuando tom\u00f3 la decisi\u00f3n de eyectarse, se encontraba a unos 15.000 pies de altura, lo suficientemente bajo como para que no hubiera tiempo para una segunda oportunidad. Se eyect\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">La recuperaci\u00f3n imposible<\/h2>\n\n<p>Aqu\u00ed es donde la historia se vuelve extraordinaria.<\/p>\n\n<p>Cuando Foust se eyect\u00f3, la enorme aceleraci\u00f3n del asiento eyectable lo impuls\u00f3 hacia arriba y hacia atr\u00e1s con una fuerza tremenda. Su cuerpo, repentinamente separado de la aeronave, provoc\u00f3 un cambio en el centro de gravedad. En esa fracci\u00f3n de segundo, el F-106, que segu\u00eda girando en su mortal barrena plana, experiment\u00f3 de repente una distribuci\u00f3n de peso diferente. Sin el piloto ni su asiento eyectable, el equilibrio de la aeronave cambi\u00f3 radicalmente.<\/p>\n\n<p>Nadie lo hab\u00eda planeado. Ning\u00fan ingeniero lo hab\u00eda dise\u00f1ado para ello. Pero la f\u00edsica es indiferente a las expectativas: el cambio en el centro de gravedad fue suficiente para alterar la din\u00e1mica de giro. El F-106, inexplicablemente, comenz\u00f3 a recuperarse.<\/p>\n\n<p>El morro descendi\u00f3 gradualmente hacia una posici\u00f3n m\u00e1s convencional. Las alas volvieron a generar sustentaci\u00f3n. La rotaci\u00f3n se ralentiz\u00f3. Y a medida que la altitud segu\u00eda disminuyendo, el Delta Dart pas\u00f3 de un giro plano a un descenso.
