English Wikipedia dates it to 1922, when the Zhejiang warlord Lu Yongxiang and the pilot Zhu Binhou set up a field and a flying school with Breguet 14 biplanes. After the Mukden Incident of 1931 the Nationalist government consolidated it as an air force base, and in the same year the Central Aviation School moved in from Nanjing.<\/p>\n<p>On 14 August 1937, Curtiss Hawk IIIs of the 4th Pursuit Group intercepted Japanese G3M bombers over the airfield. On 14 August, according to English Wikipedia&rsquo;s account of the Republic of China Air Force, Curtiss Hawk III fighters of the 4th Pursuit Group under Colonel Kao Chih-hang (Gao Zhihang) intercepted Japanese Mitsubishi G3M bombers over Jianqiao, in what Wikipedia calls the first major air engagement of the Second Sino-Japanese War.<\/p>\n<p>The results are a matter of claims. Wikipedia&rsquo;s Battle of Shanghai article says the 4th Group shot down six Japanese aircraft without loss; Japanese loss figures for the raid were not found in a source reachable for this page, so the claim is given as a Chinese one only. The same day the Nationalist air force also bombed the Japanese flagship Izumo in the Huangpu river.<\/p>\n<p>The Republic of China Air Force, now in Taiwan, calls 14 August Air Force Memorial Day.
