class=\"sh\">1963&ndash;1971: an air force handed over by the RAF<\/h3>\n<p>The Kenya Air Force is younger than the country by six months. The Ministry of Defence dates it to 1 June 1964, when the Royal Air Force elements still in Kenya left and their personnel, facilities and equipment were converted to the new service; the ministry&rsquo;s own history treats it as one of the three services set up at independence in 1963, which is why both years appear in Kenyan sources. Its first three commanders were British group captains, Ian Stockwell, Fred Rothwell and David Edwards, until Colonel Dedan Gichuru became the first Kenyan in command in 1973. The early fleet was what a new African state could fly from Eastleigh in Nairobi: de Havilland Canada Beavers and Chipmunks, according to Wikipedia&rsquo;s summary of the ministry&rsquo;s history. The air force was formed while the Shifta War was being fought in the north-east, but no source checked documents an air role in that conflict.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">1971&ndash;1982: Strikemasters, Hunters, F-5s and Hawks<\/h3>\n<p>The 1970s turned a liaison service into a small jet air force, almost entirely British in origin until Washington stepped in. Six BAC Strikemaster Mk 87 light attack jets arrived in the early 1970s, followed by Scottish Aviation Bulldog trainers from 1972 and six Hawker Hunters, which Wikipedia says served from 1974 to 1979. In June 1976 Kenya ordered ten F-5E and two F-5F Tiger IIs from the United States for $70 million. On 9 February 1978 it ordered twelve BAE Hawk Mk 52 trainers, delivered in 1980 and 1981. By 1982 the F-5Es were at Laikipia Air Base near Nanyuki, which remains the fighter base today. It was a balanced, modern fleet for its size; the problem, as 1982 showed, lay in the barracks rather than on the flight line.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">1 August 1982: the coup attempt and the end of the first air force<\/h3>\n<p>At 3 a.m. on Sunday 1 August 1982 junior air force personnel seized Eastleigh air base and then Embakasi, and at 6 a.m. Senior Private Hezekiah Ochuka and Sergeant Pancras Oteyo Okumu announced on the Voice of Kenya that the government had been overthrown. The Washington Post reported that the rebels took the radio station but not the transmitters, had no army support and were crushed within hours. At Laikipia, according to Wikipedia and a UPI report of the later court martial, Corporal Bramwell Njereman ordered rockets loaded and forced pilots to take off to bomb Nairobi; the pilots dumped their ordnance in the Mount Kenya forest instead. President Moi put the dead at 129; other estimates were far higher. UPI reported more than 2,000 air force personnel arrested, 656 servicemen had been convicted of mutiny by November 1982, and four of the leaders were hanged on 10 July 1985. The air force as an institution was disbanded.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">1982&ndash;2011: 82 Air Force, rebuilding and a long gap in fighters<\/h3>\n<p>What replaced it was 82 Air Force, a flying arm placed under tighter army control, named after the year of its humiliation. Lieutenant General Mohamed Haji Barrow Mohamud took command in 1982, and Dedan Gichuru returned from 1986 to 1989. The aircraft kept flying: twelve Short Tucano Mk 51 trainers arrived from 1990, and the DHC-5D Buffalo transports carried the army until one crashed into a residential area near Moi Air Base on 16 April 1992, killing 52 people according to Wikipedia&rsquo;s account. The Kenya Air Force regained its name and independent status in 1994 under Major General Nick Leshan. Through the 1990s and 2000s it bought cheaply and slowly, including six Harbin Y-12 light transports in 1997 and six more in 2000; Chinese Z-9 helicopters were in service by 2011. The Hawks were gone by 2012, leaving the F-5 as Kenya&rsquo;s only jet combat aircraft.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">2011&ndash;2024: Linda Nchi, Somalia and a new transport fleet<\/h3>\n<p>On 16 October 2011 Kenya sent troops into southern Somalia in Operation Linda Nchi, and for the first time the air force fought a sustained campaign. F-5s struck al-Shabaab targets around Kismayo and Jilib; on 30 October 2011 local officials told Voice of America that at least ten people were killed and 45 wounded at Jilib, and Prime Minister Raila Odinga said the civilian casualties were caused by a burning al-Shabaab vehicle that drove into a compound and exploded. Kenyan forces were absorbed into the African Union mission, AMISOM, in June 2012, and Kenya has stayed through its successors ATMIS and, from 1 January 2025, AUSSOM. The decade that followed brought a largely new fleet: three Leonardo C-27J Spartans in 2020, three AW139s in 2021, US-supplied C-145A Skytrucks, Huey IIs and ex-Jordanian AH-1F Cobras, and Grob G120 trainers that ended the Bulldog&rsquo;s 51-year career in 2023.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">2024&ndash;2026: crashes, a new commander and the old F-5<\/h3>\n<p>The last two years have been hard on the helicopter fleet and its people. On 18 April 2024 a Kenya Air Force Huey crashed after take-off at Chesegon in Elgeyo Marakwet, killing ten officers including the Chief of Defence Forces, General Francis Ogolla, himself a former air force commander and fighter pilot. Another helicopter came down in Somalia&rsquo;s Lower Jubba in February 2025; its crew survived. Major General Fatuma Ahmed, listed by the ministry as commander from 2024, was succeeded on 27 June 2025 by Major General Bernard Waliaula. The fighter force is still the F-5: FlightGlobal counted 17 F-5Es and six F-5Fs in its 2025 data, half a century after the first order, and no replacement had been announced in any source checked.
