1931 and 1933 on 22,000 acres east of Shreveport and named for Lieutenant Eugene Hoy Barksdale, a test pilot killed in 1926. Its scale and its brick art-deco buildings reflect the ambitions of the interwar Army Air Corps, and the base has been a bomber station for essentially its whole life &mdash; B-17s and B-24s in training, then B-47s, and the B-52 Stratofortress since 1963.<\/p>\n<p>The 2nd Bomb Wing, the oldest bomb wing in the Air Force, flies B-52Hs here alongside the Air Force Reserve&rsquo;s 307th Bomb Wing, which flies the same aircraft. Barksdale became the institutional centre of the American nuclear air force in 2009 when Air Force Global Strike Command was created here in the wake of the Minot-Barksdale nuclear transfer incident and other failures; the command runs the bombers and the missile wings, and Eighth Air Force, the descendant of the Mighty Eighth, is headquartered on the same base. Activated as VIII Bomber Command on 1 February 1942 at Langley Field, it flew its first bombardment mission that 4 July and grew past 200,000 people, able to put more than 2,000 four-engine bombers and over 1,000 fighters in a single day. The cost was brutal: nearly half of all Army Air Force casualties fell within Eighth Air Force, along with a third of all aircraft lost. Assigned to Global Strike Command in 2010, the Mighty Eighth today commands every operational heavy bomber wing in the Air Force, and since 24 August 2018 has housed the Joint Global Strike Operations Center, the warfighting air component to United States Strategic Command.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>The 2nd Bomb Wing has been in the bombing business longer than any other wing in the Air Force<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The wing that flies from Barksdale was organised as the 1st Day Bombardment Group in France on 10 September 1918, the first Army Air Service formation dedicated to aerial bombardment. Reconstituted as the 2nd Bomb Group at Kelly Field, Texas in 1921, it flew in Billy Mitchell&rsquo;s demonstrations that year, when bombers sank the surrendered German battleship Ostfriesland. In 1937 it took delivery of the first B-17 Flying Fortress issued to the Army Air Corps.<\/p>\n<p>In the Second World War the group flew 412 combat missions and dropped 27,797.03 tons of bombs, earning two Distinguished Unit Citations. It arrived at Barksdale on 1 April 1963 and converted to the B-52 and the KC-135. It is today the largest bomb wing in Air Force Global Strike Command, under the motto Libertatem Defendimus &mdash; Liberty We Defend.<\/p>\n<p>The modern wing flies three B-52H squadrons: the 11th, the formal training unit for the type, with the 20th and 96th as operational squadrons. Four groups support them, and the enterprise runs to nearly 9,000 active-duty, Reserve and civilian personnel plus about 6,000 dependents. In normal times it reports through Eighth Air Force to Global Strike Command; activated for its nuclear mission, it reports directly to United States Strategic Command. The Reserve&rsquo;s 307th Bomb Wing shares the ramp, the only bomber wing in Reserve Command, and its 343rd Bomb Squadron is the sole nuclear-certified bomb squadron in the Reserve. Twenty of Barksdale&rsquo;s B-52Hs are associated with the 307th &mdash; the same aeroplanes, two chains of command, one crew force.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">03<\/span><span>The B-52H at Barksdale is older than most of its crews&rsquo; parents, and the Air Force intends to fly it past 2050<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The B-52A first flew in 1954 and the B model entered service in 1955. Seven hundred and forty-four B-52s were built, and the last of them, a B-52H, was handed over in October 1962. Every B-52 flying today is that final H model. A pilot commissioned in the 2020s climbs into an airframe delivered before their grandparents met, and the crew-room joke about flying your grandfather&rsquo;s bomber is only a joke because it happens to be literally true.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft remains formidable rather than merely venerable. Eight Pratt &amp; Whitney TF33 turbofans of up to 17,000 pounds thrust each push it to about 650 miles per hour, Mach 0.84, and an unrefuelled combat range above 8,800 miles. It carries some 70,000 pounds of mixed ordnance, flown by a crew of five.<\/p>\n<p>The TF33 is the weak link, and the Commercial Engine Replacement Program is the answer. Rolls-Royce F130 engines will replace them, eight per aircraft, and the result is redesignated the B-52J. The programme passed its critical design review in May 2026; two aircraft are to be modified at Boeing&rsquo;s San Antonio facility, the first arriving later in 2026, with flight testing at Edwards to follow. The object is to keep the Stratofortress operational through 2050 and beyond. Meanwhile Barksdale flies the old one hard: training days of twelve to fifteen hours, deployments to north-west Europe, Korea and the Southern Command region, and a commander, Col. Michael D. Maginness, who says there are more requests for B-52 airpower than the force can service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">04<\/span><span>Air Force One came down at Barksdale on 11 September 2001, and the President recorded his statement there<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The 9\/11 Commission set out the sequence. Air Force One lifted off from Sarasota, Florida at 9:55 a.m., the Secret Service and the President&rsquo;s advisers arguing against a return to Washington while the scale of the attack was still unknown. The aircraft climbed and, for a time, had no destination. The President&rsquo;s military aide, an Air Force officer, researched the options and at around 10:20 identified Barksdale as a suitable interim stop &mdash; a nuclear-alert bomber base with a long runway, heavy security and communications built for exactly the kind of day it was about to have.<\/p>\n<p>Air Force One landed at about 11:45. Personnel from the local Secret Service office, the Commission noted, were still on their way to the airfield. The President recorded a statement at the base which, the Commission records, was taped rather than broadcast live for security reasons. The text released by the White House that day reassured Americans that the full resources of the federal government were at work, and closed with the line that became the first draft of a doctrine.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft did not stay. Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska was chosen next, the Commission explains, for its elaborate command and control facilities and because it could lodge fifty people overnight; the party arrived at 2:50 p.m. Barksdale had been an improvised waypoint for roughly three hours. The wooden lectern the President stood behind is now an exhibit in the Barksdale Global Power Museum, where visitors walk up and photograph it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">05<\/span><span>The 2007 Minot to Barksdale flight was the worst nuclear custody failure in modern Air Force history<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>On 29 August 2007, at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, munitions personnel prepared pylons of AGM-129 Advanced Cruise Missiles for a ferry flight to Barksdale, where the weapons were to be retired. Twelve missiles were loaded onto a B-52H. Six of them still carried live nuclear warheads. On 30 August the bomber flew to Louisiana, and it sat on the Barksdale ramp for about nine hours before a munitions airman performing a safe status check shone a torch through a small window in a warhead casing, expecting an inert training unit, and found a live one.<\/p>\n<p>A six-week investigation, presented by Maj. Gen. Richard Y. Newton III, found not sabotage but a chain of procedural breakdowns: storage personnel who did not examine all the pylons, a trailer crew that began hookup before inspections were complete, a missed database verification, and a radar navigator who spot-checked rather than completing the checklist. Had that checklist been worked through, Newton observed, the six warheads would have been found. The Air Force judged the event isolated. The deeper finding was cultural: nuclear skills atrophied by fifteen years of conventional war.<\/p>\n<p>The consequences were unprecedented. In October 2007 the Minot wing commander, the Minot maintenance group commander and the Barksdale operations group commander were relieved, the 5th Bomb Wing was decertified and tactical ferry operations suspended. In June 2008, after a separate mis-shipment of missile components to Taiwan, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates requested the resignations of Air Force Secretary Michael W. Wynne and Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley, saying a lax culture had grown around the nuclear mission. The most durable consequence was the decision to pull bombers and missiles back under one nuclear-focused command &mdash; Air Force Global Strike Command, activated at Barksdale in August 2009.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">06<\/span><span>Global Power missions, bomber task forces, and the Louisiana base that launches them<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Barksdale trades in distance. On 16 January 1991 seven B-52Gs of the 596th Bomb Squadron took off from the base, flew to the Gulf and back without landing, and launched 35 conventional air-launched cruise missiles at Iraqi power and communications nodes &mdash; the first combat use of the AGM-86C and, the crews were told, the first time GPS had guided a missile to a target. The mission ran 35 hours and 24 minutes over more than 14,000 miles, the longest combat sortie in aviation history at the time. Officially Senior Surprise, the crews called it Secret Squirrel.<\/p>\n<p>On 1 August 1994 two B-52s named Lucky Lady IV and Laissez le Bon Temps Roulez flew a 47-hour non-stop circumnavigation of the globe, dropping bombs en route. On 2 and 3 September 1996 two B-52Hs struck Baghdad power and communications targets with thirteen cruise missiles on a 34-hour, 16,000-statute-mile round trip from Barksdale, which the Air Force records as the longest distance then flown for a combat mission. The modern equivalent is the Bomber Task Force, short-notice rotations that replaced the fixed presence model of 2004 onwards.<\/p>\n<p>The base behind all this covers some 22,000 acres on the eastern edge of Bossier City, with 1,144 buildings and 47 B-52s on the ramp. In fiscal 2024 it counted 5,133 active-duty members, 1,342 reservists, 2,608 civilians and 7,116 dependents &mdash; 16,199 people in all &mdash; and reported an economic impact just over 1.1 billion dollars. All six officers aboard were killed: Maj. Christopher Cooper, Maj. Brent Williams, Capt. Michael Dodson, 1st Lt. Robert Gerren, 1st Lt. Joshua Shepherd and Col. George Martin, the last of whom was stationed at Andersen Air Force Base. Col. Robert Wheeler, then 2nd Bomb Wing commander, said the men had spent their last minutes doing what they loved, flying in defence of the nation, and that it was not in vain. The call sign Raider 21 is still honoured at Barksdale and Andersen.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"incs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barksdale.af.mil\/News\/Article\/321838\/honoring-the-airmen-of-raider-21\/\">Barksdale Air Force Base Public Affairs<\/a><\/article>\n<article>\n<div class=\"incd\">8&ndash;24 November 2025<\/div>\n<h3>Bomber Task Force Europe 26-1 takes Barksdale B-52s to Spain<\/h3>\n<p>The 96th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron deployed B-52Hs from Barksdale to Mor&#243;n Air Base in Spain for a two-week Bomber Task Force rotation running from 8 to 24 November 2025. The squadron trained with Finland, Lithuania and Sweden and flew missions reaching into the African and Central Command regions, including work with Qatar and Mauritania. Bomber Task Force rotations replaced the fixed Continuous Bomber Presence model that had run since 2004, trading predictability for the agility of Dynamic Force Employment. The first such deployment sent four Minot B-52s to RAF Fairford in January 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"incs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barksdale.af.mil\/News\/Display\/Article\/4341640\/bomber-task-force-europe-26-1-concludes-demonstrating-global-reach-and-allied-i\/\">Barksdale Air Force Base Public Affairs<\/a><\/article>\n<article>\n<div class=\"incd\">March 2026<\/div>\n<h3>Unidentified drones repeatedly cross Barksdale airspace<\/h3>\n<p>Barksdale ordered a shelter-in-place on 9 March 2026 after unauthorised drone activity over the installation, and the 2nd Bomb Wing later confirmed that multiple unauthorised incursions had followed. The wing declined to say how many aircraft were involved, citing an ongoing investigation, or whether kinetic or non-kinetic countermeasures were used. Personnel drew on a newly fielded counter-drone flyaway kit containing detection equipment and jamming tools. Officials indicated the drones did not behave like hobbyist machines, showing non-commercial signal patterns and resistance to jamming.
