In June 1914 it opened a Naval Aircraft School (Bahriye Tayyare Mektebi) at San Stefano, today&rsquo;s Ye&#351;ilk&#246;y on the Sea of Marmara, where the army&rsquo;s flying school had opened in 1912. English Wikipedia&rsquo;s history of the Ottoman air squadrons records four aircraft at the flight school in August 1914 and, at the Armistice of Mudros on 30 October 1918, three seaplane companies of four aircraft each. Beyond those figures the sources checked for this page say little about what the Ottoman seaplanes did in the war, and nothing about a naval air arm in the early Republic: military flying in Turkey was concentrated in the army and later in the independent air force, whose own page covers that story.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">The Tracker years: anti-submarine flying from Cengiz Topel<\/h3>\n<p>The modern naval air arm grew up around anti-submarine warfare and one airfield. English Wikipedia says the Turkish Navy received ex-US Navy S-2E Trackers under the Military Assistance Program and flew them from Cengiz Topel Naval Air Base, near &#304;zmit at the eastern end of the Sea of Marmara, from the 1960s, later adding retired S-2As from the Netherlands. The base carries the name of Captain Cengiz Topel, a Turkish Air Force F-100 pilot shot down over Cyprus on 8 August 1964 who died in Greek Cypriot custody; the two sides gave different accounts of his death. The Trackers served for three decades and were retired in 1994, Wikipedia says, after a series of accidents caused by the age and fatigue of the airframes. Their exact numbers were not confirmed for this page.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">Helicopters for the frigates: AB-212s and Seahawks<\/h3>\n<p>With the Trackers gone, the navy&rsquo;s helicopters became the core of the force. Agusta-Bell AB-212s, in an anti-submarine version and in an electronic warfare version built for Turkey, served alongside them, and Sikorsky S-70B-28 Seahawks followed; Wikipedia counts 24 Seahawks in December 2018, and the same number appeared in Rear Admiral Alper Yeniel&rsquo;s inventory of November 2021. DefenceTurk called the Seahawk and the AB-212 the backbone of the force for many years when it described the ageing fleet in March 2026. From 2017 ASELSAN has been fitting the Seahawks with the Turkish TEMREN missile; 20 of the 24 were done by May 2025. Six T-70 utility helicopters were allotted to the navy in the 2014 contract for 109 T-70s, but no naval delivery was found in the sources checked.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">MELTEM: patrol aircraft for the Aegean and the Black Sea<\/h3>\n<p>Fixed-wing patrol came back with licence-built CN-235s. Under the first MELTEM programme the navy received six CN-235 maritime patrol aircraft, known as P-235s, which DefenceTurk said in 2020 were flying over the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean; Wikipedia adds that from 2022 they patrolled the Black Sea heavily during the Russian invasion of Ukraine and repeatedly found drifting sea mines. MELTEM-III, signed with Alenia Aermacchi (now Leonardo) and Turkish Aerospace on 12 July 2012, converted six ATR 72-600s into P-72 patrol aircraft with Link 16 and Mk 54 torpedoes. The first airliner reached Turkish Aerospace for conversion in April 2013, the first P-72 was handed over on 11 December 2020 and the sixth was due in early 2023. Twelve maritime patrol aircraft was the stated target.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">Drones, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean<\/h3>\n<p>Drones changed the arm fastest. By March 2022, after Turkish Aerospace delivered two Anka-S and an Aksungur, Naval News counted 20 navy drones: ten Bayraktar TB2s, four Anka-Ss, four Anka-Bs and two Aksungurs. On 16 December 2019 a TB2 landed at Ge&#231;itkale in northern Cyprus. SavunmaSanayiST reported that the base was opened to Turkish Naval Forces drones previously flown from &#199;anakkale and Dalaman, and the Turkish Cypriot prime ministry said the move answered &ldquo;recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean&rdquo;, where Turkish ships were drilling in waters also claimed by the Republic of Cyprus and Greece. Turkey alone recognises the Turkish Cypriot state; the Greek Cypriot reaction was not retrieved for this page. Milliyet reported in 2024 that the Naval Air Base Command at Dalaman had become Turkey&rsquo;s second-largest drone centre.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">TCG Anadolu: a flagship without its jets<\/h3>\n<p>The newest chapter is a ship. TCG Anadolu, ordered in 2015 and commissioned on 10 April 2023, was designed to carry F-35B jump jets; Turkey&rsquo;s removal from the F-35 programme after it bought Russian S-400 missiles ended that. In their place the navy took over ten AH-1W SuperCobras from the army in early 2022, its first attack helicopters, and on 19 November 2024 a Bayraktar TB3 drone took off from and landed on Anadolu&rsquo;s deck, a first for a fixed-wing drone of its size on a short-deck ship without arresting gear. The TB3s, however, were accepted by the Land Forces Command in September 2025, according to the defence ministry, and no navy acceptance was announced.
