On 29 July, that sound faded for good &mdash; and now the Air Force is moving fast to fill the silence with something very different.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>With the last Warthogs gone from Tucson, Air Force Special Operations Command is ramping up its plans to stand up a new wing at the Arizona base. The close-air-support mission that defined Davis-Monthan for generations is giving way to special-operations firepower.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f5f5f5;padding:20px;border-radius:8px;margin:24px 0\"><p style=\"margin:0 0 10px;font-weight:700;font-size:18px\">Quick Facts<\/p><ul style=\"margin:0;padding-left:20px;line-height:1.8\"><li><strong>Base:<\/strong> Davis-Monthan AFB, Tucson, Arizona<\/li><li><strong>Ending:<\/strong> A-10 Thunderbolt II operations after ~50 years (final flight 29 July 2026)<\/li><li><strong>Departing:<\/strong> three squadrons (47th, 354th, 357th); ~78 A-10s to the boneyard<\/li><li><strong>Incoming:<\/strong> the 492nd Special Operations Wing, an AFSOC &ldquo;power projection wing&rdquo;<\/li><li><strong>New aircraft:<\/strong> OA-1K Skyraider II and other special-operations types<\/li><li><strong>Timeline:<\/strong> move accelerating in 2026; full capability targeted around 2028<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The end of an era in Tucson<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The final flight was a two-ship formation, flown by the 355th Operations Group commander and the 357th Fighter Squadron commander, met on landing with the traditional water-cannon salute. Three A-10 squadrons &mdash; the 47th, 354th and 357th &mdash; are standing down, sending roughly 78 <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/a-10-warthog\/\">A-10 Thunderbolt II<\/a> jets to the nearby boneyard. For a base that has flown the type for about 50 years, it is a genuine end of an era.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>For years, the A-10 seemed immortal, kept alive as much by its fierce fans in Congress as by the Air Force. Photo: U.S. Air Force<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Enter the 492nd<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>That new reason is the 492nd Special Operations Wing, relocating its headquarters from Hurlburt Field, Florida, to become one of AFSOC&rsquo;s &ldquo;power projection wings&rdquo; &mdash; formations meant to bundle special-operations strike, mobility, ISR and air-to-ground integration and focus them on a specific region of the globe. Under plans that have been revised over the past year, the wing will be built around the new OA-1K Skyraider II armed-overwatch aircraft and other special-operations types, reorienting the base from tank-busting to commando support.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Their access to the ranges that are there in Arizona and in the western United States will increase their training opportunity.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr.<\/strong> &mdash; then U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff, 2023<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Arizona ranges were a big part of the pitch, and so was jobs. The base&rsquo;s population is expected to hold steady at roughly 9,600 airmen and civilians &mdash; a fact that helped soften decades of fierce local resistance to losing the Warthog.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;[We are] encouraged by the Air Force&rsquo;s intention to bring new, durable flying missions to Davis-Monthan.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Arizona congressional delegation<\/strong> &mdash; joint letter, 2025<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A slow, deliberate handover<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>None of this happens overnight. The full 492nd is not expected to be operationally capable at Davis-Monthan until around 2028, with environmental reviews and unit moves rolling out in stages.
