Those Vietnam-era machines are now simply worn out. Back in 2018 the Air Force said it would replace the Hueys with the new MH-139 Grey Wolf. Last year it changed course, deciding it was cheaper to modify HH-60Ws already sitting in the backup inventory than to buy fresh Grey Wolves. The rescue helicopters will be stripped of their combat kit &mdash; gun, chaff and flare dispensers, armor, rescue litter &mdash; and refitted with an 11-seat cabin for their new VIP role.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rOgbD2Qb3w4\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Congress isn&rsquo;t sold<\/h2>\r\n<p>Not everyone is convinced. In their version of the 2027 defense bill, members of the House Armed Services Committee flagged doubts about swapping the mission onto a different airframe.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;The committee remains concerned regarding the justification for transitioning these missions to an alternate rotary-wing platform and seeks additional details on cost and operational implications.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>House Armed Services Committee<\/strong> &mdash; 2027 National Defense Authorization bill<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>For now, the Air Force is pressing ahead.
