It was 6 October 1973, and along the Suez Canal and across the Golan Heights, Egyptian and Syrian armies were pouring over Israel&rsquo;s lines. Within days, the country that had stunned the world in 1967 was fighting for its life on two fronts, and quietly, terrifyingly, running out of the things that keep an army breathing: shells, missiles, tanks, replacement aircraft. In Tel Aviv, Prime Minister Golda Meir did the arithmetic of a nation of three million people absorbing casualties by the thousand, and picked up the phone to Washington.<\/p>\r\n<p>What followed was one of the most consequential logistics operations of the twentieth century, and one of the least remembered. It had a strange, almost pastoral codename: Nickel Grass. Over the next 32 days, giant American transports would fly a narrow lane down the middle of a hostile sea, land in a country under fire, and deliver an entire war&rsquo;s worth of materiel. The Arab armies had trained hard and Moscow had armed them on a colossal scale: 600 advanced surface-to-air missiles, 300 MiG-21s, 1,200 tanks, hundreds of thousands of tons of war material. By the fourth day, Israeli airpower was being clawed out of the sky by mobile SA-6 missiles its pilots had never learned to beat. Tanks brewed up in the Sinai sand. Ammunition estimates that had looked generous on paper were revealed as fantasy. Even the legendary defense minister Moshe Dayan was rattled.<\/p>\r\n<p>Then the picture got worse. On 10 October, Soviet transports began landing in Damascus and Cairo with fresh supplies for Egypt and Syria. This was no longer just a regional war; it was a proxy contest, and one side was being resupplied while the other bled. Richard Nixon was sinking under Watergate; his vice president had just resigned; Henry Kissinger was juggling d&eacute;tente with the Soviets and the fear of an Arab oil embargo. For four days the machinery dithered, trying to keep American fingerprints off the effort, hoping Israel&rsquo;s own El Al fleet or reluctant commercial carriers might quietly do the job. None of them could, or would.<\/p>\r\n<p>On 12 October, Nixon cut through it. Told that planners were haggling over how many aircraft to risk, he gave an order that has echoed through Air Force history ever since.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Send everything that can fly.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555;text-align:left\"><strong>Richard Nixon<\/strong> &mdash; President of the United States<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>Less than nine hours later, C-141s and C-5s were loaded and ready to move. The Military Airlift Command, an outfit that had spent the post-Vietnam years being shrunk and doubted, was about to be handed the mission of its life.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L_dl8Od4WeQ\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The bridge through the Azores<\/h2>\r\n<p>There was one enormous problem: the map. America&rsquo;s European allies, terrified of Arab reprisals, slammed their doors. Germany, Spain, Greece, Turkey, all refused to let the transports land or even cross their skies. The airlift that Nixon had just ordered had, on paper, nowhere to touch down between the United States and the war.<\/p>\r\n<p>Portugal saved it. After hard bargaining, Lisbon agreed to look the other way as traffic exploded at Lajes Field, a windswept base on the Azores in the mid-Atlantic. Overnight it became the hinge of the whole operation, at one point handling more than 1,300 extra personnel crammed into reactivated World War II barracks. From Lajes, the aircraft threaded a deliberately precise corridor: down to Gibraltar, then straight along the center line of the Mediterranean, the airspace boundary between hostile states to the south and nervous friends to the north. U.S. Navy Sixth Fleet fighters shepherded the transports until Israeli Phantoms took over for the final run into Lod. It is the kind of detail that gets lost in the tonnage figures, and worth pausing on.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eCT3mte8sIE\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Thirty days, twenty-two thousand tons<\/h2>\r\n<p>The first C-5 touched down at Lod at night on 14 October carrying 97 tons of 105mm howitzer shells, arriving just as Israeli guns were scraping the bottom of their stocks. Another 829 tons followed in the next 24 hours. A hundred miles to the southwest, the largest tank battle since Kursk was raging. The timing was almost unbearable.<\/p>\r\n<p>Then it became a river. At its peak the flow reached six C-5s and seventeen C-141s a day, streaming in from bases across the eastern United States. By the time the last aircraft landed on 14 November, MAC had delivered roughly 22,300 tons of material in 567 missions and more than 18,000 flying hours, without a single accident. The C-5 Galaxy, mocked for years in the press as an expensive lemon, carried nearly half the tonnage and hauled the outsize freight nothing else could swallow: M60 Patton tanks, 155mm howitzers, CH-53 helicopters, A-4 Skyhawk fuselages. Nickel Grass didn&rsquo;t just resupply an army. It rewrote the Galaxy&rsquo;s reputation in a month.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/46xsxBcntBw\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>The comparison that mattered most was with the other side. American transports out-delivered the Soviet airlift, and did it flying about 6,450 nautical miles each way against the Soviets&rsquo; 1,700. It was a demonstration, unmistakable in every capital watching, of what long-range American airpower could actually do.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The price of the lifeline<\/h2>\r\n<p>Freed from having to ration every shell, Israeli forces went over to the offensive: recovering the Golan and marching toward Damascus in the north, crossing the Suez and encircling Egypt&rsquo;s Third Army in the south. A ceasefire took hold at the end of October. The airlift had helped turn the war.<\/p>\r\n<p>It also came with a bill. The Arab oil producers made good on their threat, slapping a total embargo on the United States. Prices spiked, gas lines formed, and the 1973 oil crisis reshaped American economic and foreign policy for a decade. And the operation exposed a hard lesson the Air Force took to heart: without Lajes, Nickel Grass might have been impossible. The result was a permanent commitment to aerial refuelling, the stretched and refuelable C-141B, and a doctrine of global reach that would be cashed in again over the deserts of 1991.<\/p>\r\n<p>For Israel, the meaning was simpler and more personal. Golda Meir never forgot the sight of those enormous grey aircraft descending out of the Mediterranean haze, one after another, carrying the difference between defeat and survival.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;For generations to come, all will be told of the miracle of the immense planes from the United States bringing in the material that meant life for our people.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555;text-align:left\"><strong>Golda Meir<\/strong> &mdash; Prime Minister of Israel<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>Nearly every airman who flew it has a story about the El Al flight attendants waiting with a hot brunch at 3 a.m., or the souvenirs pressed into tired hands. But the real souvenir of Operation Nickel Grass is bigger than any of that. For a desperate month in 1973, a fleet of transport planes flew a tightrope across a war and proved that logistics, unglamorous, exhausting, relentless logistics, can bend the course of history.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"font-size:14px;color:#666;font-style:italic;margin-top:26px\">Sources: Walter J.
