Its answer was one of the strangest and most beautiful warplanes America ever built: a swept-wing jet bomber that took off from the sea.

The Martin P6M SeaMaster was a four-jet flying boat almost the size of a B-52. It could skim the waves at close to the speed of sound, refuel from a submarine off an enemy coast, and hurl nuclear weapons from a watertight rotating bomb bay. It was also, in the end, doomed.

Kurzinfo

Flugzeug: Martin P6M SeaMaster jet-powered flying boat

Rolle: Strategic nuclear bomber for the U.S. Navy’s “Seaplane Striking Force”

Erster Flug: 14 July 1955, on Chesapeake Bay

Motoren: Four turbojets in over-wing pods, away from the sea spray

Geschwindigkeit: Mach 0.89 at low level — where the contemporary B-52 managed about 0.55

Gebaut: Fewer than a dozen; cancelled 21 August 1959; none survive

A bomber that needed no runway

The idea had a certain logic. Airfields are fixed and easily targeted; the open ocean is not. A bomber that lived on the water could scatter, hide, and strike from anywhere — freeing the Navy from the runways that tied the Air Force down. The Pentagon coined a name for the concept: the Seaplane Striking Force.

Martin’s design was audacious. A long, slim hull carried a high wing swept 40 degrees, drooping so sharply that the wingtip floats were fixed permanently in place. Four turbojets sat in pods above the wing to keep their intakes clear of spray. At 134 feet long with a 102-foot span and a 160,000-pound takeoff weight, it was nearly as big as the B-52 — and far faster down low.

Getting up “on the step” during takeoff. The over-wing engine pods kept the intakes clear of the water. U.S. Navy photo

Its signature trick was the ordnance system: a rotary weapons door in the hull that spun 180 degrees to drop bombs or mines at up to 600 mph while keeping the hull sealed against the sea. Planners imagined SeaMasters refuelled by submarines near hostile shores, ranging up to 3,000 miles to strike targets deep inside the Soviet Union.

Tragedy in the Chesapeake

The first XP6M-1 flew on 14 July 1955.
