The answer, dreamed up under the codename Aphrodite, was brutally simple. Take a bomber too worn out for normal service, strip it, and fill it with more explosive than any bomb bay could ever carry. Then fly it into the target by radio control.<\/p>\r\n
There was a catch. The guidance was primitive, so a two-man crew had to take off, arm the load by hand, and parachute out over England before a “mother” aircraft steered the flying bomb across the Channel. Everything depended on those few minutes between arming the explosives and jumping clear — and on Torpex, a filler more powerful, and less predictable, than TNT.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
<img data-opt-id=2144778235 fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/ml5psubhxdln.i.optimole.com\/cb:0e0_.b970\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/ig:avif\/https:\/\/migflug.com\/jetflights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/joseph-kennedy-jr-navy.jpg\" alt=\"Lt.
