Ein tiefer, buckliger Rumpf, ein mit Radarger\u00e4ten vollgestopfter Bug und acht rotierende Propellerbl\u00e4tter, die in zwei gegenl\u00e4ufigen Scheiben angeordnet waren. Sie ist eines der ungelenksten Flugzeuge, die die Royal Navy je in Dienst gestellt hat.<\/p>\r\n<p>Es war auch in seiner Funktion brillant. Das linke Triebwerk trieb den vorderen Propeller an, das rechte den hinteren.<\/p>\r\n<p>Diese Konstruktion l\u00f6ste ein Problem, das schon vielen Piloten zweimotoriger Flugzeuge das Leben gekostet hatte. Da die Propeller koaxial und gegenl\u00e4ufig waren, f\u00fchrte das Abschalten eines Triebwerks zu keinem asymmetrischen Schub \u2013 das Flugzeug flog einfach mit dem anderen Triebwerk weiter. Und genau das taten die Besatzungen. Auf l\u00e4ngeren Patrouillenfl\u00fcgen schalteten sie ein Triebwerk der Mamba ab, reduzierten die Reisegeschwindigkeit von etwa 400 km\/h auf rund 270 km\/h und verl\u00e4ngerten so ihre Flugdauer von etwa dreieinhalb auf \u00fcber f\u00fcnf Stunden. Der vordere Motor wurde mit einer Z\u00fcndpatrone gez\u00fcndet; der hintere wurde dann durch den Luftstrom des vorderen Propellers in Gang gesetzt. Die Tragfl\u00e4chen lie\u00dfen sich zweimal zu einem markanten \u2018Z\u2019 zusammenklappen, um wertvollen Hangarplatz zu sparen. Ein robustes Bugradfahrwerk erm\u00f6glichte dem Piloten im Gegensatz zu den vorherigen Spornradflugzeugen eine gute Sicht \u00fcber den Bug. Sie wurde zur AEW3 umgebaut, einem luftgest\u00fctzten Fr\u00fchwarnflugzeug mit gro\u00dfem Radar und st\u00e4rkerem Triebwerk, das den Himmel nach der Flotte absuchte. In dieser Funktion blieb sie bis 1978 im Einsatz, als die Royal Navy ihren letzten Flugzeugtr\u00e4ger mit festen Tragfl\u00e4chen, die HMS Ark Royal, au\u00dfer Dienst stellte.<\/p>\r\n<p>Rund 300 U-Boot-Jagdflugzeuge vom Typ Gannet und 45 Fr\u00fchwarnversionen wurden gebaut und dienten unter anderem Gro\u00dfbritannien und Australien.
