It is shorter than a Spitfire. A tall pilot practically wears it. And yet this pocket-sized British jet became the original mount of the Red Arrows — and, in Indian hands, earned one of the proudest nicknames in fighter history: the Sabre Slayer.

The Gnat is proof that in a dogfight, small and nimble can beat big and powerful. Its designer believed it, the Red Arrows proved it beautiful, and Indian pilots proved it deadly.

Kurzinfo

Designer: W.E.W. "Teddy" Petter, for Folland Aircraft

Erster Flug: 18 July 1955 (the Midge demonstrator flew in 1954)

Rolle: lightweight day-fighter and advanced jet trainer

Motor: one Bristol Siddeley Orpheus turbojet, ~4,700 lbf

Größe: ~9.1 m long, ~6.8 m span — shorter than a Spitfire

Höchstgeschwindigkeit: about Mach 0.98

Red Arrows: the team’s aircraft from 1965 to 1979

Biggest operator: India, which licence-built it (HAL Gnat) and its successor, the HAL Ajeet

One engineer's crusade against bloat

The Gnat was the obsession of Teddy Petter, a brilliant British designer who had grown convinced that modern fighters were becoming absurdly heavy, complex and expensive. His answer was heresy: build the smallest, simplest jet fighter that could still do the job — one so cheap and easy to maintain it needed barely any specialised tools.

The result first flew in 1955. Powered by a single Bristol Orpheus engine, it could nudge the speed of sound while costing a fraction of its rivals. The Royal Air Force never bought it as a fighter — but it fell for the two-seat trainer version, and that is where the little jet became famous.

A preserved Folland Gnat — India built the type under licence and flew it in combat against Pakistan. For fifteen years, those bright red darts that carved smoke across British summer skies were Gnats — tiny, tight-turning and perfect for close-formation display. Only in 1979-80 did the team trade them for the bigger Hawk. To a whole generation, the Gnat simply War the Red Arrows.

The Folland Gnat on r/WeirdWings

The Sabre Slayer

India took the Gnat furthest. Licence-built by HAL and flown in large numbers, it went to war twice against Pakistan — and there it met the F-86 Sabre, the celebrated American dogfighter. By Indian and independent accounts, the nimble Gnats gave the heavier Sabres a genuinely hard time, and the nickname "Sabre Slayer" was born (though, as with all combat claims, the exact tallies are debated).

In the 1971 Battle of Boyra, Gnats downed two Sabres in minutes. One pilot, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, was later awarded India's highest gallantry decoration — the only member of the air force ever to receive it. And in 1965, Squadron Leader Ajjamada Devayya took his Gnat against a far faster F-104 Starfighter near Sargodha; the dogfight killed him, but decades later a Pakistani pilot's account confirmed he had taken the Starfighter down with him, earning a posthumous medal 23 years on.

Barely bigger than the pilots who flew it: a Folland Gnat preserved in a museum.
