Doch dann wurde ebendiese Maschine zu einem der peinlichsten Jagdflugzeuge, die die Royal Air Force je beschafft hatte. Die Swift ist ein seltener Fall: Fast zeitgleich stellte sie einen Weltrekord auf und scheiterte kl\u00e4glich.<\/p>\r\n<p>Es stammte von Supermarine, dem Unternehmen, das Gro\u00dfbritannien die <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/jetflights\/de\/flugzeug\/supermarine-spitfire\/\">Spitfire<\/a>. Die Erwartungen waren enorm hoch. September 1953 erreichte Testpilot Mike Lithgow mit einer Swift F.4 \u00fcber Libyen eine Geschwindigkeit von 1184,5 km\/h und sicherte sich damit den absoluten Geschwindigkeitsweltrekord. Es war ein wahrer Triumph \u2013 das letzte britische Serienflugzeug, das jemals den absoluten Geschwindigkeitsrekord hielt. Die Swift war 1950 \"vom Rei\u00dfbrett\" in Auftrag gegeben worden, als Versicherung f\u00fcr den Fall, dass der Konkurrent\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/jetflights\/de\/flugzeug\/hawker-hunter\/\">Hawker Hunter<\/a> Es hatte Probleme. Der Rumpf war noch f\u00fcr ein \u00e4lteres Triebwerk ausgelegt, und die Flugeigenschaften waren in entscheidenden Bereichen mangelhaft: Es neigte gef\u00e4hrlich zum Aufb\u00e4umen, die Bordkanone klemmte, und der Nachbrenner lie\u00df sich in gro\u00dfer H\u00f6he nicht wieder z\u00fcnden. Dank ihrer robusten Flugzeugzelle eignete sich die Swift hervorragend f\u00fcr Tieffl\u00fcge, weshalb die RAF sie zur FR.Mk 5 umbaute, einem taktischen Aufkl\u00e4rungsflugzeug, das in Baumwipfelh\u00f6he \u00fcber die deutschen Ebenen raste. In dieser Rolle gewann sie 1957 und 1959 sogar NATO-Aufkl\u00e4rungswettbewerbe.
