Then reality intervened: every Sabre engine Britain could make was needed for the Hawker Typhoon, which was actually fighting. The Firebrand was left without a powerplant.<\/p>\r\n<p>The fix was to rebuild it around the big Bristol Centaurus radial and repurpose it entirely &mdash; from nimble interceptor to heavy single-seat torpedo striker. That is a bit like being told your sports car is now a delivery van. The Firebrand was poor at the first and awful at the second. The type served briefly aboard carriers like HMS Eagle before the Fleet Air Arm quietly replaced it with the Westland Wyvern in 1953.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The lesson of the Firebrand<\/h2>\r\n<p>The Firebrand's failure was not really Blackburn's fault alone. It was the story of a wartime programme overtaken by events: an engine reassigned, a role rewritten, a schedule that slipped past the very war it was meant to fight.
