Der erfolgreichste von ihnen war ein 23-j\u00e4hriger Leutnant namens George Welch.<\/p>\r\n<p>Noch im Smoking von der durchzechten Nacht fuhr Welch durch das Chaos zu einem kleinen Hilfsflugfeld, startete mitten in den Angriff und schoss vier feindliche Flugzeuge ab. Es war einer der wenigen amerikanischen Siege an diesem katastrophalen Morgen.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f5f5f5;padding:20px;border-radius:8px;margin:24px 0\"><h3 style=\"margin-top:0;padding-top:0\">Kurzinfo<\/h3><ul style=\"margin:0;line-height:1.9\">\r\n<li><strong>WHO:<\/strong> George S. Oktober 1954, Test einer F-100A Super Sabre<\/li>\r\n<\/ul><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Ein Smoking, eine P-40 und eine geh\u00f6rige Portion Nerven<\/h2>\r\n<p>Welch und sein Freund Kenneth Taylor hatten die ganze Nacht auf einer Tanzveranstaltung verbracht, als die Bomben fielen. Anstatt Deckung zu suchen, riefen sie voraus zu dem kleinen Feld bei Haleiwa an der Nordk\u00fcste von Oahu, wo einige P-40-J\u00e4ger abseits der Hauptziele standen, und rasten unter Beschuss mit dem Auto dorthin.<\/p>\r\n<p>Aus der Luft und nur mit Maschinengewehren im Gewehrkaliber bewaffnet, st\u00fcrzte sich Welch in zwei Eins\u00e4tzen \u00fcber Oahu in japanische Flugzeugformationen \u2013 wobei er zwischendurch landete, um sich neu zu bewaffnen, w\u00e4hrend der Angriff noch tobte. Diese wurde ihm jedoch verweigert, da Welch ohne Befehl gestartet war. Es h\u00e4lt sich hartn\u00e4ckig die Geschichte, dass Welch die XP-86 Wochen vor Chuck Yeagers offiziellem Rekord im Sturzflug kurzzeitig durch die Schallmauer gebracht haben k\u00f6nnte \u2013 eine unbewiesene und von anderen Piloten widerlegte Behauptung. Welch selbst hat dies nie f\u00fcr sich beansprucht, und es bleibt Legende.
