Fast niemand erinnert sich an die drei M\u00e4nner, die ein Jahr sp\u00e4ter den Atlantik auf dem beschwerlichen Weg \u2013 gegen den Wind, von Europa nach Amerika \u2013 \u00fcberquerten und dabei beinahe ums Leben kamen. Ihr Flugzeug hie\u00df Bremen, und ihr vergessener Flug war in vielerlei Hinsicht eine k\u00fchnere fliegerische Leistung als jener, der Lindbergh zur Legende machte.<\/p>\r\n<p>Am 12. April 1928 starteten sie von einem Feld au\u00dferhalb von Dublin. In die entgegengesetzte Richtung, gegen denselben Wind, zu fliegen, war weitaus gef\u00e4hrlicher \u2013 und hatte bereits Todesopfer gefordert. Allein im Jahr 1927 waren zehn Versuche, den Atlantik von Ost nach West zu \u00fcberqueren, gescheitert und hatten sieben Menschenleben gekostet. Hermann K\u00f6hl war ein deutscher Pilot, der im Ersten Weltkrieg Bomber geflogen hatte. Baron Ehrenfried G\u00fcnther von H\u00fcnefeld, der adelige Sponsor und Besitzer des Flugzeugs, war ein gebrechlicher Mann, der einst aus gesundheitlichen Gr\u00fcnden von der Luftwaffe abgelehnt worden war. Foto: Bundesarchiv \/ Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<p>Sie starteten um 05:38 Uhr vom Flugplatz Baldonnel bei Dublin, die Bremen \u00e4chzte unter der Last von rund f\u00fcnf Tonnen Flugzeug und 520 Gallonen Benzin, w\u00e4hrend die Menge jubelte und, ganz im irischen Stil, Weihwasser hinter ihnen verspritzte.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Verloren \u00fcber dem Eis<\/h2>\r\n<p>Die meiste Zeit \u00fcber wehte ein g\u00fcnstiger Wind. Doch etwa 900 Meilen vor Neufundland schlug das Wetter um, und die Kompasse spielten verr\u00fcckt. Die Bremen wurde weit von ihrem Kurs abgetrieben und irrte blind \u00fcber einem grauen Ozean und anschlie\u00dfend \u00fcber einer wei\u00dfen Eis- und Felsw\u00fcste. Als die Treibstoffanzeigen fast leer waren, setzte K\u00f6hl die Maschine auf einem zugefrorenen Teich neben einem Leuchtturm auf Greenly Island vor der K\u00fcste Labradors auf. Der Buschpilot Duke Schiller erreichte als Erster die gestrandete Besatzung; ein weiterer kanadischer Flieger, Rom\u00e9o Vachon, flog mit einer Gruppe Reporter ein, und schon bald dr\u00e4ngten sich etwa sechzig Journalisten auf der kleinen Insel, um \u00fcber die Landung zu berichten. Als die Flieger schlie\u00dflich New York erreichten, bereitete ihnen die Stadt einen triumphalen Empfang.
