Nine parts brought the bomb from a London traffic light to Nagasaki. The last part answers the question Washington asked in September 1949: how did Stalin get it so fast?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>Somewhere between Japan and Alaska, 3 September 1949. A Boeing WB-29 of the 375th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron drones along its assigned track from Misawa toward Eielson Air Force Base \u2014 a routine the crews fly daily, and not, whatever the squadron name says, entirely about the weather. In a scoop on the aircraft&rsquo;s spine, filter papers are sampling the high cold air.<\/p>\r\n<p>On the ground, a technician runs the papers past a Geiger counter and stops. The filters are, in the words of the official history, thoroughly speckled with radioactive debris. In the three years the Atomic Energy Detection System has operated, 111 alerts have all traced back to earthquakes, weather and instrument noise. This is Alert Number 112. Within three weeks, laboratories comparing fission products across a dozen more sampling flights will tell President Truman something the CIA had estimated was four years away: between 26 and 29 August, somewhere on the Asian landmass, a plutonium bomb of the Nagasaki type has exploded.<\/p>\r\n<p>The American atomic monopoly was 49 months old, and it was over. The explanation was not, in the main, a triumph of Soviet physics \u2014 though Soviet physics was formidable. It was standing quietly in the Los Alamos of Part 5 all along: a polite, taciturn theoretician whom colleagues trusted to babysit their children. This closing chapter is about him, the teenager who spied in parallel, the network that carried their secrets, and the bomb they delivered to Stalin.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f5f5f5;border:1px solid #e0e0e0;border-radius:8px;padding:20px 24px;margin:28px 0\"><p style=\"margin:0 0 10px;font-weight:700;font-size:17px\">Quick Facts: The Spies and the Soviet Bomb<\/p><ul style=\"margin:0;padding-left:20px;line-height:1.8\"><li><strong>22 kilotons<\/strong> \u2014 yield of RDS-1, first Soviet atomic test, 29 August 1949, Semipalatinsk<\/li><li><strong>Alert No. 112<\/strong> \u2014 the WB-29 filter alert that was real; the previous 111 were natural events<\/li><li><strong>Mid-1953<\/strong> \u2014 the CIA&rsquo;s &ldquo;most probable date&rdquo; for a Soviet bomb, published weeks before it exploded<\/li><li><strong>1&ndash;2 years<\/strong> \u2014 the acceleration historians credit to atomic espionage<\/li><li><strong>Unter 2 Stunden<\/strong> \u2014 the length of Klaus Fuchs&rsquo;s Old Bailey trial; 14 years the sentence, 9 served<\/li><li><strong>19<\/strong> \u2014 Theodore Hall&rsquo;s age when he handed the implosion secret to Moscow; he was never charged<\/li><li><strong>~3,000<\/strong> \u2014 Soviet cables ever decrypted by the Venona project, released publicly only in 1995<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Quiet Man<\/h2>\r\n<p>Klaus Fuchs came off the same conveyor of exile that fills Part 2 of this series: born in 1911, a German communist student who fled the Gestapo in 1933, took his doctorate in Bristol, and was interned by Britain in 1940 as an enemy alien \u2014 then released, vetted and, in May 1941, recruited by Rudolf Peierls himself into Tube Alloys, Britain&rsquo;s atomic project. Within months of arriving at the heart of the secret, he contacted Soviet military intelligence. From 1942 his handler was a woman the neighbours in rural Oxfordshire knew as a cheerful housewife: Ursula Kuczynski, codename Sonya, a decorated GRU officer running a clandestine transmitter from her cottage, meeting Fuchs for what looked like chance encounters on country lanes near Banbury.<\/p>\r\n<p>In August 1944 Fuchs joined the British Mission at Los Alamos, working in Hans Bethe&rsquo;s Theoretical Division on the implosion problem \u2014 the exact physics that made the plutonium bomb work. Bethe considered him one of the most valuable men in his division. He was liked everywhere: a good dancer, a careful hiker, the bachelor colleagues trusted to babysit. Richard Feynman lent him his car; Fuchs used a car to carry the bomb&rsquo;s design to Santa Fe. His confession later gave the double life a clinical name that has entered the literature.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;I used my Marxist philosophy to establish in my mind two separate compartments... Looking back at it now the best way of expressing it seems to be to call it a controlled schizophrenia.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Klaus Fuchs<\/strong> &mdash; written confession to MI5, 27 January 1950<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>The tradecraft that moved his product was pure spy fiction, except documented. At his first New York meeting in February 1944, Fuchs carried a tennis ball and his courier wore gloves and carried a second pair; the recognition dialogue ran through directions to Chinatown. The courier was Harry Gold, a Philadelphia industrial chemist who had drifted into espionage in the 1930s. In June 1945, on a dusty road outside Santa Fe, Fuchs handed Gold a packet containing the design of the Fat Man implosion bomb \u2014 the device of Trinity and Nagasaki \u2014 weeks before it was tested. By his own confession he considered it the worst thing he had done: giving away the principle of the design of the plutonium bomb.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Volunteers<\/h2>\r\n<p>Moscow did not rely on one source, and its second window into Los Alamos opened by walk-in. In October 1944, around his nineteenth birthday, Theodore Hall \u2014 a Harvard physics prodigy working on implosion diagnostics, the youngest scientist on the mesa \u2014 used a leave in New York to enter Soviet offices and volunteer the biggest secret on Earth, unprompted and unpaid. The NKVD gave him the codename MLAD: the young one. Photo: US government, public domain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>The third source was humbler and, in the end, the most consequential for American courtrooms: David Greenglass, an Army machinist at Los Alamos and the brother of Ethel Rosenberg, recruited through his brother-in-law Julius. When Gold came to collect from him in Albuquerque in June 1945 \u2014 the day after meeting Fuchs \u2014 the recognition token was a Jell-O box top cut in two jigsaw halves, and a greeting: I come from Julius. Greenglass handed over sketches of the implosion lens moulds for 500 dollars.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Beard and the Beria Machine<\/h2>\r\n<p>What did the Soviets do with it all? The Soviet program predated the spies&rsquo; best material: in 1942, physicist Georgy Flyorov had noticed that fission papers had vanished from Western journals \u2014 the silence itself was the secret \u2014 and wrote to Stalin warning that the results of a Western bomb would be so huge that there would be no time to decide who was guilty of Soviet inaction. Photo: public domain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;The materials add exactly what we have been missing... they make it possible to by-pass many labor-intensive phases of the problem.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Igor Kurchatov<\/strong> &mdash; assessments of the espionage material, 1943<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>After Hiroshima, Stalin handed the whole enterprise to his secret police chief, Lavrentiy Beria, who ran it with gulag labour, limitless priority and the standing implication of what failure would cost. Beria insisted the first Soviet device be an exact copy of the American Fat Man \u2014 overriding his own scientists, who had a better, lighter design of their own \u2014 because a proven bomb mattered more than national pride. On 29 August 1949, at 7 a.m., RDS-1 detonated on a tower in the Kazakh steppe at about 22 kilotons. Among Soviet physicists a black joke circulated afterwards that honours had been distributed by a simple rule: those who would have been shot had it failed became Heroes of Socialist Labour.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"margin:24px 0\"><div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NA4Fk31hYSM\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;font-style:italic;margin:6px 0 0\">The RDS-1 test itself: Soviet footage of First Lightning, 29 August 1949.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>How much did the spies buy Moscow? The consensus of historians, and of Russian physicists speaking after the Cold War, is one to two years \u2014 Richard Rhodes puts it at a full two. In the currency of the early Cold War, with American war plans and Soviet insecurities both keyed to the monopoly, two years was an era.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Unraveling<\/h2>\r\n<p>The spies were undone not by surveillance but by mathematics. Since 1943 a US Army codebreaking project later known as Venona \u2014 begun by a former schoolteacher named Gene Grabeel at Arlington Hall \u2014 had been hoarding intercepted Soviet cables enciphered with one-time pads, theoretically unbreakable. But wartime pressure had led Soviet manufacturers to duplicate thousands of key pages, and in December 1946 cryptanalyst Meredith Gardner began reading fragments. Of hundreds of thousands of cables, only some 3,000 ever yielded \u2014 but among them, in 1949, was a 1944 report on gaseous diffusion that could only have come from one member of the British Mission. The codename was CHARLES. The man was Fuchs \u2014 by then head of theoretical physics at Harwell, Britain&rsquo;s own atomic establishment.<\/p>\r\n<p>MI5 could not use Venona in court without burning the source, so it sent William Skardon, a pipe-smoking interrogator of legendary patience, to talk. Through December 1949 and January 1950 Fuchs denied, wavered \u2014 and then, on 24 January, confessed, dictating a written statement three days later. His trial at the Old Bailey on 1 March 1950 lasted less than two hours; the sentence was fourteen years, the maximum for passing secrets to a wartime ally, treason being unavailable since the Soviet Union had not been an enemy. He served nine, emigrated to East Germany in 1959, and died a decorated East German scientist in 1988.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"margin:24px 0\"><div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sXwSbkdVQro\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;font-style:italic;margin:6px 0 0\">British Path&eacute;, 1949: the news of the Soviet test shakes the United Nations \u2014 the monopoly&rsquo;s end as the newsreels told it.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Fuchs&rsquo;s confession pulled the thread that unravelled the American network. He identified Harry Gold; FBI agents searching Gold&rsquo;s Philadelphia house in May 1950 found, behind a bookcase, a street map of Santa Fe \u2014 the city Gold had sworn he had never visited. Gold confessed and named Greenglass; Greenglass named his brother-in-law Julius Rosenberg. In March 1951 Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage, and Judge Irving Kaufman, sentencing them to death, declared their crime worse than murder. Photo: public domain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>The Rosenberg case remains the rawest wound of the atomic spy story, and honesty requires its asterisks: Julius&rsquo;s espionage is established beyond serious dispute by Venona and later Soviet sources; Ethel&rsquo;s conviction rested on her brother&rsquo;s testimony that she typed the notes \u2014 testimony Greenglass recanted in 2001, admitting he had lied to protect his own wife. And Theodore Hall, whose material arguably outweighed Greenglass&rsquo;s by an order of magnitude, was questioned by the FBI in 1951 and released; prosecuting him meant revealing Venona. He moved to Cambridge, England, became a pioneer of biological X-ray microanalysis, and was unmasked only when Venona was declassified in 1995.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;It seemed to me that an American monopoly was dangerous and should be avoided... To help prevent that monopoly I contemplated a brief encounter with a Soviet agent, just to inform them of the existence of the A-bomb project.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Theodore Hall<\/strong> &mdash; public statement, 1997, after his exposure by the Venona release<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">After the Monopoly<\/h2>\r\n<p>The consequences arrived like falling dominoes. Truman announced the Soviet test on 23 September 1949, in a statement carefully drained of alarm \u2014 we have evidence that within recent weeks an atomic explosion occurred in the USSR \u2014 and four days after Fuchs&rsquo;s written confession the following January, he ordered development of the hydrogen bomb. On 1 November 1952, the Ivy Mike shot vaporised the Pacific islet of Elugelab with a yield of 10.4 megatons \u2014 five hundred times Nagasaki. Atmospheric sampling \u2014 the mission that caught First Lightning on a filter paper \u2014 became the Cold War&rsquo;s stethoscope, pressed permanently to the planet&rsquo;s chest; its successors fly still. That is the note this series ends on, because it began with an aircraft-obsessed premise: the atomic age was, from Rutherford&rsquo;s laboratory to Tinian&rsquo;s runways to a weather plane over the North Pacific, always also an aviation story.
