They were relics. And for ten desperate days, they were all the island had.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The story that grew from those days &mdash; three little fighters named Faith, Hope and Charity holding off an entire air force &mdash; became one of the most beloved legends of the Second World War. Like most legends, it is part truth, part beautiful embroidery. When Mussolini took Italy into the war on 10 June 1940, the island was suddenly vital &mdash; and virtually defenceless. Every modern fighter Britain owned was needed over England or Egypt. Malta had, on paper, nothing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Then someone remembered the crates. An air commodore, Forster Maynard, had found packing cases left behind by a passing aircraft carrier. Inside were disassembled Gloster Sea Gladiators &mdash; single-seat biplanes of a 1934 design, already obsolete, with a top speed of barely 257 mph. Ground crews bolted them together. They managed to make six airworthy, enough to keep three in the air at any one time while the others gave up their parts.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bjh34Hq0Gpg\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Obsolete, outnumbered, airborne anyway<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>What they faced was genuinely modern: Macchi C.200 monoplane fighters some 55 mph faster than the Gladiators, and Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 bombers that could outrun them outright. And here is where legend and fact meet: the biplanes really did disrupt the raids, forcing bombers to scatter and drop off-target, and they really did shoot down several Italian aircraft over the following weeks for the loss of just one Gladiator, at the end of July.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Sometimes there would be a hundred plus &mdash; clouds of bombers and fighters swarming above. And then, in a moment, you would be on your own &mdash; everything else had overtaken you.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Flight Lieutenant James Pickering<\/strong> &mdash; Malta Gladiator pilot<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Where the legend bends<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The tidy story of exactly three aircraft is the embroidery. There were never neatly three &mdash; six were assembled and used interchangeably &mdash; and the names Faith, Hope and Charity were not painted on in the heat of battle. They were attached later, by a Maltese newspaper, by which time two of the biplanes had already been lost and only one remained. Hurricanes, faster and better armed, arrived to help before June was out.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DOSdxjE-8Xk\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>None of that diminishes what happened. The real achievement of the Gladiators was not a kill tally &mdash; it was hope. In the first terrifying days of the siege, they proved to a bombed island that someone was fighting back.
