In the early hours of Monday, 10 August 2026, the widebody touched down at Dublin with 206 people aboard, none of them hurt. The aircraft, an Airbus A330-300 registered HB-JHN, is a familiar sight on SWISS's North American routes. Then, somewhere out over the ocean, cabin crew noticed smoke &mdash; traced, SWISS later said, to a passenger's power bank overheating in business class.<\/p>\r\n<p>The flight deck did not gamble. The crew requested a priority landing and diverted to Dublin, the natural bolt-hole for an aircraft that needs to be on the ground quickly while still west of Europe. HB-JHN landed safely at 03:07 local time, and all 206 passengers were put up in hotels while engineers inspected the jet. The aircraft was cleared, flew home to Zurich later on Monday, and was back on the schedule the same evening.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"max-width:550px;margin:0 auto 28px\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=2086600387662852104&theme=light\" style=\"width:100%;height:520px;border:none;border-radius:12px;overflow:hidden\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>No one was injured, and from the outside it looked like an inconvenient overnight delay. Inside the cabin, it was something more serious: a lithium-battery fire in its earliest stage, caught and contained before it could become the kind of event that fills accident reports.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\">\r\n<em>&ldquo;The smoke was caused by a power bank.&rdquo;<\/em>\r\n<div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>SWISS<\/strong> &mdash; in a statement confirming the cause of the LX52 diversion<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why a gadget keeps grounding widebodies<\/h2>\r\n<p>Power banks are, in effect, spare tanks of chemical energy. When a lithium cell fails &mdash; through damage, a manufacturing flaw, or simple overheating &mdash; it can enter &ldquo;thermal runaway,&rdquo; a self-feeding reaction that produces intense heat, smoke and sometimes flame that water alone struggles to quench. A string of in-flight battery fires prompted airlines across Asia and Europe to restrict how and where passengers may use power banks, and SWISS itself has prohibited using them on board since the start of 2026. The LX52 diversion is a reminder of how hard such rules are to police when the offending item fits in a pocket.<\/p>\r\n<p>It also marks the second time in recent weeks that a SWISS transatlantic flight has turned back because of cabin smoke, after an A330 bound across the ocean diverted to Bangor, Maine, in late July.
